It appears that the Lord was upset with Palestine/Israel and Samaria for taking in the cultures and pagan religions of Egypt and surrounding civilizations, all practicing similar pagan religions involving gruesome rituals and enslavement of men/women. One verse indicates that ancient Israelites of Jerusalem, Aholibah, were guilty of performing a pagan ritual, casting their children into the fire, in His name. That would fall right in line with some of different accounts of ancient Israel's integration of pagan rituals (traditions of men) with Yahwehism (pure Old Testament religion) throughout the Old and New Testaments. Jesus and other prophets tried to warn their fellow Israelites, attempting to correct their straying from Yahweh's commandments into the laws and customs of man-made principalities, the "traditions of men".

I'd be upset with them too. Don't be offended the harsh language, God essentially created these two pure lands and the leaders of each land both desecrated their sovereignty and betrayed their creator by trashing his gifts and proselytizing into paganism.

Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.

20 For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh [is as] the flesh of asses, and whose issue [is like] the issue of horses.

is this chapter metaphorical or literally

Ezekial is God's word. As is all of God's word and as such it is holy and useful and should be read, studied and heeded.

"All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" -- 2 Timothy 3:16

Ezekiel is prophetic and this chapter is figurative. Because God is writing to humans, he uses analogies that human's can understand to relate the emotions he feels. Here he uses adultery because most people know what that feels like. Subsitute 'idolotry' for adultery and you will know what God feels like. In Verse 2, the mother is 'Mother Israel', the two daughters are the house of Israel, then the house of Judah. They are two different houses, Christians and Jews. God doesn't like his children to embrace other religions, customs of other religions or to make compromises for any reason even in the name of trade or wealth building. He considers it idolotry. Think about diplomats who chase trade agreements. Think about diplomats who bow to foreign governmental bodies and change laws and social mores to accomodate them.
