Why did King David and Solomon have hundreds of wives and concubines when the Ten Commandments forbade adulterers?

It was most likely because of examples from their fathers. Jacob/Israel even Abraham. May have started with Lamech Genesis 4:19, Genesis 6:2-3, Genesis 1:25, Genesis 25:6, Genesis 31:50,

    Deuteronomy 7:2-4, 1 Kings 11:1-11,

Keith The ten commandments said don't commit adultery which is sexual relationship with another married

woman which is not fornication which is sex with an unmarried woman. So between the two mentioned only

David committed adultery and paid for it!

Hi Keith. Back then it wasn't uncommon for men to have more than one wife. I don't think there was simply a lot of people. But we now know that, that isn't Yah's best for us. You also have to remember that Yah loved them. Yah makes honorable vessels and vessels for dishonor. He gives passes to people, and he does not give that same pass for others. You also remember that these two men were rich, plus they knew Yah. So yeah, that is why we have to watch the way we come against people because they may be really favored of Yah.

Brother Keith, may Christ grace us with HIS wisdom and His understanding.

The Old Testament was meant to cast a shadow, the shadow is not what's REAL.

Christ came through the flesh, by the house of David. David is a shadow of the OLD BLOODY covenant taken with a physical bloody sword. David was not allowed to build God's temple.

Solomon is a shadow of the NEW PEACEFUL Covenant taken with THE SWORD of truth, the word of God.

Soloman (a shadow of CHRIST, filled with wisdom and knowledge to govern his kingdom) and build God's temple, whose temple we are.

Now concerning all his wives, that was also a shadow of Christ and all of creation being his WIFE.

    God Bless You.

Hi Keith, Good question. We must remember that as David had several wives and concubines in his day. It was not looked upon as a sin. It was basically a custom, and a show of wealth and power. But remember, David committed adultery with

Bathsheba. When he saw her on a rooftop taking a bath, lust settled in his heart. He committed the sin of adultery with her, and she became pregnant. He sent her husband Uriah into the heat of the battle, knowing he would be killed so he could have Bathsheba to himself.

Lust overtook David which led to coveting another man's wife, which led to adultery.

    See II Samuel chapters 11-12
