    Matt.2:4-6 "Bethlehem" (1 of 2)

"He (Herod) demanded of them where Christ should be born./ And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,/ And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel."

This is a paraphrase of the Prophet Micah "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."

The ruler in Israel whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting can only be the Word that became flesh. When God spoke through his prophet it can only be understood by the sign which man hears as well as sees. St Paul explains the true Light in terms of what is knowable. "The light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ' has shined in our hearts. The word that was sent shall not return to God in void. The phrase 'unto me' makes makes clear what Isaiah meant.Is.55:11

The name Bethlehem of Judah gives historically the place name. It means the house of bread.

The Spirit annotates Jesus Christ as the bread from heaven. In Micah we have several puns or word-play and the name Bethlehem is one such.
