Both Wesley 's and the People 's Bible interpretations of this scripture have missed the mark. The "covering " being spoken of is not a veil, and it is certainly not worn in submission to men. Vs. 15 tells us that "her hair is given her for a covering ". There is no need for a woman of faith to wear scarves, prayer caps, or veils, and especially not to show that we are weak. Our hair is worn long because it is the glory of womankind. Eve even though her reputation ruined her name was created last - which makes her the crowning glory of all of God 's creation. Women are the most beautiful creatures in God 's kingdom. Men, according to the scripture above this one, are shamed for having long hair - it 's uniquely ours. The latter part of this scripture tells us that if a woman even cuts even a teeny little bit, even a trim, it 's just the same as if she shaved her whole head. It 's a dishonor to her because she 's removed a characteristic and a source of beauty that God designed only for women. It 's like cutting off a peacock 's feathers or a lion 's mane. We 've been given free will to obey his wishes and He has asked for us to pray to Him with our heads covered. It 's a veil of beauty.

This scripture, like many other contentious verses found in the Bible, were in all likelihood, spoken in jest or as an idle afterthought.

In response to Toujoursdan 's question about the Lord commanding men not to cut their hair and beard. We must remember that in Leviticus, Jews were under the law and are a chosen and perculiar people. He wanted them set apart, but in the new testament, both the circumised and uncircumised were saved. Though the Jews are still His chosen people, they no longer have separate themselves. Christ came to fulfill the law so that we no longer had to suffer the consquences of being unble to fulfill the law. Now His Grace is sufficient, though there were benefits to obeying the law. I Corth 11:16 states there is no law custom against men having long hair, it may be considered shameful, being that is no longer required and represents the glory of women . In today 's society orthodox Jewish Priest still follow the custom of not cutting their hair beard to be seen as set apart. If you feel led by God to not cut your hair, be obedient to the spirit of God, otherwise it is no longer a mandate.

1 CORINTHIANS 11:28-30 COMMENTS 1 26 2015 11:31 I believe that before we participate in Lord 's table we must examine ourselves if we are capable to do so. As what written in 2 CORINTHIANS 13:5 GALATIANS 6:4. Lord, clean us that we can participate in your supper. A-men.
  • Adam on 1 Corinthians 11:28 - 9 years ago
I think it means that we should examine the sin in our lives and see how unworthy of we are God 's grace so that we come to and leave to share the cross with humility
  • Grant on 1 Corinthians 11:3 - 9 years ago
Trinitarian Alert:Well,Paul wrote this years after Jesus 's death so lets compare scripture rather than leaning on our own reasoning. This passage says that God is the head of his son, Christ. Ok, lets go right to the source himself,Jesus, and see what he has to say. At John 14:28 Jesus conferms that his Father is greater than he is.If Jesus were God, how do trinitarians explain this?
  • Joni G on 1 Corinthians 11 - 9 years ago
Vs 15 says a woman 's long hair is her covering. She should not be praying where there are men. In a room full of women, it is okay to pray. When I donated my long hair to locks of love, I sat in a different part of the sanctuary during worship, because I didn 't have long hair for my covering. Covering here comes from the Greek word, peribolaion, something cast around. Her long hair.
  • Joni G on 1 Corinthians 11 - 9 years ago
Vs 16 " But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given for a covering. " The Greek word for covering is peribolaion, meaning, something cast around. She should wear her hair down around her shoulders when she is worshipping the Lord. Verse 15 says her hair is her covering.

I guess Wesley does not know the differece between the words, cut and shave.
  • John on 1 CORinthians 11 - 9 years ago
I am in total agreement with Gary 's statement, the bible is God 's word given to humankind as a blue print to follow. Why not believe the only inspired word of God as it is written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We must not forget the context of what the Holy Spirit is saying to us, and that is "Principles of Public Prayer ". We must allow the Holy Spirit to teach us, how to follow, and to keep "the ordinances as i delivered them to you ". We cannot change God word it is written for our learning a clear part to lead us to Christ, we must not lean to our own understanding in which many of our great scholars has fail in the pass and present. Let 's follow what the Holy Spirit is saying to us through the Holy Scriptures and not fallible beings.
  • Brue Ramsey on 1 Corinthians 11:19 - 9 years ago
This is proof that God wants us to use our brains, to "study ourselves approved ". It 's also proof that if there is eternal damnation, then showing how great you are with the Bible is more important to God than the eternal souls of your fellow humans IF someone is able to wield the Truth in a twisted way that causes children of God to stumble.

For bad angels women should cover her head cf.gensis 6 2,4

The native American doesn 't have a problem with Christianity but with God It is his Word that we read it in. As in many cases we are not talking religion but what God has said. Religion is a fast track to hell. When we get born again we have the Holy Spirit to guide and show us all things and instead of fighting the work of the Holy Spirit we should yield to Him.
  • Sheila on 1 Corinthians 11:13 - 10 years ago

Ps, 91 11 and Luke 4 10. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They are ministering spirits which are sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. Thus a worman need to have authority and power for angels to minister to her.
  • Johnny Braden on 1 Corinthians 11:14 - 10 years ago
The bible is clear a man should not have long hair, Samson was used by God to teach us something, like making a donkey talk, taking a man up in a whirlwind, taking all a man children and giving them all back. This was not the norm, nature teaches us what is normal. Long hair is not normal for a man.
  • Stephen ojok on 1 Corinthians 11:16 - 10 years ago
There 's something to consider in paul 's saying,as people of God we all know how women who are in the house of God ought to adorn themselves potraying man as men potrays God paul clearly stated that women has to cover because of the angels. So what would it potrays then if she is shorn? Paul was not utterly saying that a woman should shave.even naturally, its only for some circumstances that a woman shaves
  • Tim George on 1 Corinthians 11 - 10 years ago
Paul is telling the believers to follow him as they follow Christ. Just as GOD is the head of Christ, the man is the head of the woman. Then they must examine themselves before they eat the Lord 's Supper.

I use to persecute people who don 't eat pork, but it was reveal to me who am I to judge them that chooses not to eat pork? Because the part of the U.S. that I live they eat wild animals that i would not consider eating. About the long hair on man or no hair for a women been dishonorable... v16 clearly says it and summarizes the contentious debate of v1 v15

This verse is about self awareness introspection respect before declaring yourself holier than the next person. Whether they are below above you, no man is an island.
  • Sue Edwards on 1 Corinthians 11:26 - 10 years ago
I believe that when God says "as often as you eat... ", he means Every Time you eat and drink. Therefore, rather than communion being a ceremony performed once a week or once a month in the church, when all come together to eat and drink the bread and wine, which The Word prohibits, vs 20 22 it is a private appreciation of and thanks giving for the sacrificial death of Jesus.

I must say that each of those that wrote a comment, created more confusion than clarification! Each one needs to edit themselves and re word their comments in order to clarify what they are attempting to clarify.

I think most of the followers of Christ have forgotten this verse in 1 Corinthians 11 22 and have been doing similar things now Christians need to wake up and stop throwing parties at Church premisses
