I think Paul writes about women s hair being shaven or short or long only in his epistle to the Corinthians There is a good reason for this Corinthos at that time was one of the big ports in the south east of Europe It was inevitble that there were many common women in the city The Society had put a rule that these women should shave their head so they would be recognized Many of these women believed in Paul s preaching and came to church with shaved head A confusion started in the church I suppose that s when Paul decided to put some order in the church and thus came the head covering Still whatever the reason my belief is that when a woman is prophesying or praying in church she should wear a head covering
  • Victor on 1 Corinthians 11:15 - 10 years ago
If a woman have long hair it is a glory to her for her hair is given her for a covering The covering here is not d same with the covering in 1corinthians 11 5 The bible made a specification about a woman praying or prophesying should cover her head Let us obey God After the praying or prophesying you can remove the covering and have your long hair which is your covering against been shorn It for your glory not any others
  • Yediydyah on 1 Corinthians 11:4 - 10 years ago
Paul was a Jew and as all Jews do when they pray they use the Tallit or prayer shawl during services at the temple and i assume this is the way Paul prayed in the Synagogue I did the same for 20 years following Judiasm This must have been a revelation to Paul now having Moshiach Messiah been revealed as head of the Church Jesus Christ the Messiah is our Covering What about the going into the closet that is using the prayer shawl in prayer If there is a Messianic Rabbi out there that can explain this deviation from the faith of the Hebrews
  • Robert benson on 1 Corinthians 11:31 - 10 years ago
The Spirit of the Lord all ways points to Jesus leads to repentance True repentance is remembered no more by God Cast away as far east to west There is no more judgment from God or devil True repentence now Not just I m sorry John 1 1 In beginning word and God are same Word to flesh
  • Mike Irby on 1 Corinthians 11:16 - 10 years ago
I believe Paul is saying If it causes you to stumble wearing or not wearing we have no such practice It is not a law It is also worth noting that Paul said if it is ok for a woman to have shorn hair or a shaved head then this obviously would not apply Consider scripture verses that teache men not to trim their beards or shave their heads Thirdly those who would contend women should wear head coverings should also contend that Jesus did not have long hair though Jesus is commonly portrayed that way in our culture In this passage Paul says it dishonors a man to have long hair This is ammo for the contentious Lastly This passage dispels another false teaching Many teach women should not prophesy in church They are mistaken according to this passage were they are only encouraged to cover their head while prophesying or praying
  • Harry johnson on 1 Corinthians 11:16 - 10 years ago
Apostle Paul wouldn't have said a woman's long hair is her glory and for a covering, why would he go against his teaching, He is not that kind of a man.
  • Davie on 1 Corinthians 11 - 10 years ago
having long hair and for it not to be cut was part of the nazarite vow, along with no drinking of alcohol, samson, samuel and others in O.T,done this, also John the baptist would have had long wild hair,it never says in N.T its a sin for a man to have long hair, but that its a SHAME,So Jesus came and bore our shame on the cross,so no doubt he would have had long hair,Samson a type of christ and those that took the nazarite vow, bearing the shame of sin, then, yet unpaid for, notice in 1cor11:16 the church has no such custom that men shouldnt have long hair,(study the words, rasor, polled, hair, head)
  • Tomana on 1 Corinthians 11:14 - 10 years ago
Samson was commanded by God that he should never cut his hair (for what reason(s) I do not know) but to be commanded to not cut his hair clearly shows us it was the norm for men to cut their hair; Sampson was about to become a one of a kind kind of guy and his hair length was not the norm. The bible says it's against nature to be homosexual and it says it's against nature for men to have long hair. Asking the question, "how long is long?" is all too often the same as asking, "Can God make a stone so large that even he can't move it?" Those are Satan questions, clever words to deceive - same as when he said to Eve, 'you shall surely NOT die." There were many things that God overlooked ... until the cross and there after. If you're a Christian man and you're wondering what 'long hair' means, perhaps you're just looking for an 'out'? If you're struggling with what constitutes 'long hair' on a man, maybe just get a crewcut or a cut around the ears and the back above the collar and be done with the questioning ...

Christ came from Woman. Her child is her crown it would seem, and she is to walk worthy of his name, in some places the head is the heart. because of her Son she has been given authority because of the angels who are watching. What are they watching? The Christ Glorifying His Father, willingly laying his life down on the cross , this makes sense as Jesus has told us to pick up our cross and follow him.
  • A Man of GOD on 1 Corinthians 11:14 - 10 years ago
Did you know that the first recorded hair cut in the Bible caused a man to lose his strengh and because one lock of his hair that GOD gave him was cut he became so weak that he could not defend himself and was blinded. Imagine that, just a lock, not even all of his hair! Let me remined you brothers that GOD loves us and wants us to come to Him as we are whether we have long hair, short hair or if we're bald! Just as we are.

Why do the Catholic stress/ emphasise on The Last Supper?
  • Shahida kouser on 1 Corinthians 11:6 - 10 years ago
The bible clearly speaks of women needing to cover up their heads, yet these Christian women come up to the muslim women and say why they have their heads covered up.
  • Steve Castaneda on 1 Corinthians 11:7 - 10 years ago
I like it but, I believe it should have more references; both OT and NT. Thanks, Steve
  • Sister Helen on 1 Corinthians 11 - 11 years ago
regarding verses 20, 21, 22 we are not to eat food at church, but are to eat at home. We should be eating the word of God, the bread of life. That is what we are there for...to learn what we need to save ourselves.
  • Ben Weaver on 1 Corinthians 11:12 - 11 years ago
From Chapter 7:1 on, Paul is answering their questions. His response in chapter 11 seems to be about the channel of life from God, through Adam, and then through Jesus. Verses 3 thru 9 describe the order as God, Adam, and then woman at creation, but Adam was not by a woman. Verse 11 changes this order as both genders now being involved, when Jesus is the channel for God's life to us. A woman was needed for the messiah to identify with fallen humanity. Also, the channel for the new life from God was a male. So, "in the Lord" of verse 11, gives the setting for the explanation in verse 12, that both genders were needed to again connect the two worlds. Some modern versions twist verses 10 and 16 to create a smooth thought flow. This is wrong and unnecessary since Paul is presenting two different situations. Paul's message is Jesus, rather than worldly religion. See chapter 2:2.

submission to the God-given order and "chain of command." A "covering" on a woman's head is used as an illustration of the order, headship, and the authority of God. The key verse of this passage is 1 Corinthians 11:3 "But I want you to know that the head( authority )of every man is Christ, the head ( authority )of woman is man, and the head( authority ) of Christ. the woman ought to have ruler over her head. man is to have power over her He is her power ,her vail ,her covering. The angels has power over them.

we should all be with christ.and love him with all your heart, strenghand mind.
  • Mack on 1 Corinthians 11:14 - 11 years ago
Define: "long". And by whose definition?
Aren't we (including Paul) really talking about masculinity VS effeminacy? And is this really something we want to beat each other over the hairy head with?
Now before you jump me, do an honest study of the Shroud of Turin. Then we shall talk further.
  • Janet on 1 Corinthians 11:29 - 11 years ago
This is not to be taken lightly for it is in memory of the love Christ has for us and the sacrifice he made with his blood and his body. This is not a meal, that's what u have homes for!
  • Ken Bergstrom on 1 Corinthians 11:16 - 11 years ago
One should not explain away the passage of 1 Cor. 11, but explain what Paul is trying to teach. This passage is not difficult to understand, people just explain it away so they don't have to live under its teaching.
  • Val on 1 Corinthians 11:28 - 11 years ago
Reading 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 (especially verse 33 and 34) will give you the full context of what it is meant by "examine yourselves". Verse 33 says "So Then brothers and sisters, when you eat, you shall all eat together. Anyone who is hungry should eat at home, so that when you meet together it will not result in judgment. The context of that portion of scripture was because they spent all day traveling to meet together in the beginning of that century (travel to Corinth). The apostle Paul heard about the divisions among them when they would bring food from home and possible eat during services.

I don't catch the revelation about this verse, because Samson had hair on his head and it brought glory upon him. How come it says it is a shame here when the word of God never changes? Please anyone who can explain this to me, kindly do. thanks
  • Tehillah Leask on 1 Corinthians 11:13 - 11 years ago
A woman's hair is her husband's glory.A veil covering her head is in obedience to God. Not only in public places.. eg. I spend far more time praying in private than I do in public..praying is praying no matter where you are. I believe that Christian woman aught always to have their head covered. Remember that Corinth is Greece..Europe, not the middle east.. so it is not just a middle eastern custom,it is a contentious issue, but obedience is the only way for God to answer our prayers and for the angels to know that they are seeing a woman of God obedient to the scriptures.
    God Bless
    Tehillah

The Shroud Of Turin depicts Jesus with long hair. Further more, 1st Corinthians 11:14 says: "Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him". Fact is! "The Very Nature Of Things" prove "Lions, Horses, Bison, Wolves, Guinnea Pigs, Orangutans, etc," all have long hair. The original Greek text symbolizes men ornamenting their hair as women did. Paul was the only disciple to make this claim. Jesus himself, never commanded it, nor spoke of it.

    This I do agree!.....

    "View Wesley's Notes for 1 Corinthians 11:14

For a man to have long hair, carefully adjusted, is such a mark of effeminacy as is a disgrace to him."
  • Liberty on 1 Corinthians 11:15 - 11 years ago
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. The word covering in this context refers to beauty. It is a glory to her and not covering in lieu for a veil. If the it is for covering then what is the essence of Paul discussing the subject knowing full well that every woman has hair on her head. Paul can not contradict himself.

  • Lonnie on 1 Corinthians 11:14 - 11 years ago
I believe that the Bible is plain when it says that it is a shame for a man to have long hair. This is one of the ways that we are able to determine the difference between the sexes.
  • June on 1 Corinthians 11 - 11 years ago
The Lord is saying that women must have long hair. They are not to cut it period. Whether it grows long or not here on earth. In Christ, our theophany, we have long hair we are under a Nazarite vow.Your hair covers your head. A hat or cloth, veil, covers your hair. Cutting it is not being in His word, it is being in fashion, a prisoner to the world.
