It is so interesting how everyone has a different take on the same passages. I want to point out that no one commented on verse 6. The authour is saying that you cannot be a true believer and still be controlled by sin. Being controlled by sin does not mean you never sin. I see alot on here this question about being saved forever and going to heaven and it really comes down to if a person is "truly saved " and if they have "truly put their faith in Christ ". Only God knows this but I would say that certain sin such as murder, rape, extreme greed etc. are indicators that a person is not truly saved and would thus have to be born again to inhereit the kingdom of heaven.

when we accept Christ we are walking in the light, we do not have to do any works to stay in the light and if we are saved we can never walk in darkness no matter what we do but we are capable of committing dark acts but we are not able to ever get out of Gods light once we accept Christ. our sinful actions cannot take us out of the light I know,i know, it makes the devil and some Christians mad that my sinning will not keep me out of heaven
  • Cornelia on 1 John 1:7 - 10 years ago
This portion of scripture offers a solution to or shows why there is disunity in the local churches It is because we are not walking in the light Jesus If you have to or more persons following marching instructions left right left right for as long as they follow the instructions they will automatically be in the same timing one with another

This completed joy or fullness of joy how can it be captured with so much anger in this world
  • Michael on 1 John 1:9 - 10 years ago
Arthur 12 3 13 is absolutely correct I too believe 1 Jn 1 is NOT written for the benefit of believers The Gnostics were unbelievers among the believers and needed to hear TRUTH about their sin s Either Christ died for all sin for all time or He did not If we still have to make effort to receive forgiveness as the Old Testament people Jews did as the Apostle Paul also states Christ s death was in vain My salvation is simply Him living His life in and through me and when I seek to do my will I say Thank you for having already forgiven me and for having cleansed me from unrighteousness I am continuing to understand Your deep love for me and I am so very grateful for Your love He desires for me to be conscious of HIM and HIS life and love for all others not a sin consciousness which would keep my focus on sin It is very freeing for my mind He truly lives and is truly madly in love with each of us
  • Bob on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
Sam, you are mistaken on your belief that we are not saved forever when we place our faith in Jesus. Hebrews 10:26 refers to those who hear the word and wear the Gospel, and make the choice to ignore it and continue on with their life without Christ. If we had to continually be "saved" then there would have been no need for Jesus to be our sacrifice; there would be no need for us to have faith in Him as the one and only true Son of God. Bottom line, we would have to go to God the Father; but Jesus is our only intercessor. He is the only way we can be viewed by God as one of His children. We could not even come close to being in His presence had Jesus not cleansed us once and for all.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.( GAL. 6:7 ) It was the same Apostle that wrote this thru the inspiration of GOD(2TIMOTHY3:16)

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people-
    HEBREWS 10:26-30

WITH THIS YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS UNSCRIPTURAL AND HERESY TO CONCLUDE THAT ONCE SAVED, YOU ARE FOREVER SAVED.

Philippians 2:12 Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

NOTE: DON'T LIVE AND SWIM IN SIN WITH THE MINDSET OF YOUR FUTURE SIN ARE ALREADY FORGIVEN YOU.
  • Faleye Olaniyi Oluwatayo on 1 John 1:7 - 11 years ago
this passage of the scripture is a call to be more close to God, the passage is telling us of what is expected of an individual to walk with God. It then mean that if we claim to know God and still have some devlish acts in us, then we are liers.

  • Millie on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
the person who thinks his future sins are forgiven in advance, needs to read I john 2:1...IF we sin,,,we must confess and ask forgivness thru Jesus,,,He is our advocate with the Father.,,don't be deceived into thinking you can continue to sin and that a past repentance covers it,,,,read Hebrews,,,read Romans...if you truely repent because you see where you have sinned against God, and if you fall in love with Jesus,,,you won't have a sinning problem. But then IF you err, you can go to Jesus with a repentant heart and He will forgive each and every sin. It is His will to present you faultless to the Father.

theres a choice we must make to be bless or cursed,it so easy as 1-2-3
  • Arthurs Comment on 1 John 1:9 - 11 years ago
1 John 1:9 was written to Gnostics teachers who had infiltrated their ranks and John was addressing them. It was not written to believers.

Consider this: In the old testament, the Hebrews confess their sins to have their sins covered for one full year under the old covenant when, under the New Covenant, many christians confess their sins daily? is not the blood of Jesus better than that of bulls and goats?
If confessing is vital to forgiveness why did not Paul, the man that God used to write thirteen different epistles, mention anything at all about confessing sins in any of them?
When you accepted The Lord Jesus Christ you were translated from darkness into the light and all your sins have been forgiven past, present and future. Alleluia thank you Jesus!!!
  • Loreen on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
The book of 1john is very powerful I love how it says " We love cause he first loved us"
Without God loving us we wouldn't know what love is or how it feels to be loved, So the authour of Love is God Himself* its not by our own ability that we love but God loved us for us to know Love #Revelation is we can't love on our own ability, Just like we couldn't pay for our own sins, Jesus had to #Love

YES SALVATION THROUGH CHRIST IS OUR ONLY HOPE .. CHRIST IN YOU THE HOPE OF GLORY... NO YE NOT THAT YOU HAVE BEEN BOUGHT WITH A PRICE .. . For the most part most of religion dose not understand that the scripture is alive today as much as it was in the early rain church ...Jesus is not dead ... Read First john ... and understand that The Gospel of salvation is just as alive today as it ws then ... and all scripture is given unto us to bring us UNTO .. salvation..
  • Virgina Gerena on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
As it is written in the scribes in the beginning it was God he is the Word. It is unfortunate that becausr of/all the variations, translations & religions they've twisted & changed the Word to fit their selfish ways, their standards & corupt ways. Destroying all the gd things he created. We need more prayer & accord i among the different cultures. The Lord be with us in these conflicting times.
  • Sarah on 1 John 1:9 - 11 years ago
If we truly have the conviction that we have sinned whether unbelief or behavioural we should tell God by confessing it to him which fulfills the purpose of his son Jesus then he promises that he is faithful and just to forgive us. I believe that your confession has to be felt for you to trully receive his forgiveness! This really brings so much joy. Halleluyah!

THERE is only one god who is the father, the son and the holy sprit. This part of the bible clearly shows that trinity is not a joke .it is real the creator of this univers expreses himself as 3 but one.
  • Rev. Autrey on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
(Verse 9) "But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong." But who is the "him" in this verse. It is not the Father or the Holy Spirit. It is Jesus, himself, the personality through whom God speaks to us.

Here is the point. It is the law that points out our sins. But it is Jesus who takes them away. This is what John meant when he said of Jesus, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world."

Those who try to take away their own sins are on a disappointing dead end. They are trying to do something that the Bible says they can never do. Paul said that it is because we are sold unto sin ( Romans 7) and compelled to do it because of who we are. In any case, Paul concluded that the only solution in in Jesus, and his ability to free us.

Firstly, the devil is the father of all lies, we were all born into sin because of our foreparents (Adam and Eve). Therefore we must acknowledged that we a sinners. If we say or believe that we are not sinners therefore we have placed ourselves at the same level of God who is sinless. As a result we must confess our sins, repent and allow God to remove all unrighteousness then and only then can we be accounted as a child of the Most High God.
