I am particularly blessed by verse 3 cos the most important thing in my life is the priviledge to have fellowship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

  • Charbel z on 1 John 1:9 - 11 years ago
This is my first time to write on any website or comment though I chose to do it now for I believe confession is not a statement of our sin , but it is a confession to Jesus that we love him and by his love we shall have forgiveness
  • Rob on 1 John 1:9 - 11 years ago
Gods word is powerful I consider myself very lucky to have felt the salvation of Christ Jesus!
  • KABI ANDREW on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
Jesus is light and as long as you are in him, you will always be in light, this light will direct you in every thing.

  • Martha Prince on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
Dan...these scriptures should answer your question.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  • Dan on 1 John 1:9 - 11 years ago
Are we to confess our sins simply by talking to God privately in prayer or rather, by confessing to a priest of God?
I believe that, confession in this context means both. Glory be to God for His Grace.
  • Dan on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
God is light,if i keep his commandments 1:23 God who is light Dwells in me and i dwell in him 1:24 its impposible for me to walk in darkness because in him is no darkness at all i then have fellowship one with another God and his son Jesus if i have fellowship with you i am not talking about frendship but the fact that you and i dwell in god and god dwells in us because we conffess that jesus is his son 1:4-15
  • Douglas Ezenwa on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago

  • Tony burnley on 1 John 1:8 - 11 years ago
i believe the word of the LORD, his word is truth and trustworthy, therefore we all have sinned, and sin is yet in our reach, i also believe that we yet sin, but not willingly so to speak, we as believers hate sin, and in our soul exixtence we are cleansed in and from the bllod of JESUS.
  • Luleka on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
The chapter gives us the reassurance that repentance is an ongoing process and through our walk in the light we will be cleansed and highlights the fact that confession and repentance is the lifestyle of a believer.
  • Jovy on 1 John 1:9 - 11 years ago
This verse promises me/us that if we would be true to ourselves by acknowledging that we fall short of the glory of God, He is faithful to cleanse and free us from the bondage of sin. God wants to fulfil His promise, but not until we made our hearts right with God, that is to redeem us from eternal separation from Him.
  • Evette on 1 John 1 - 11 years ago
This is what is helping me through my storm! It helps me have hope and know that God will not go back from his words. James 2:12-13 - So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. So I know He will do as long as I do my part and it is me to trust and have faith in him.
  • Timothy Wayne George on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
Confession of sin, is to agree with God that you are a sinner. Just as King David confessed in Psalm 51 against thee only oh God have I sinned. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation. In order for us to be restored to fellowship with God, and the Church, we must confess our sin. God then has promised to cast our sin as far as the east is from the west. May the Lord bless you richly, my beloved.
  • Gift on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Truly, brethren what does it really mean to 'confess our sins? What does confession mean in this context? It is important to make this plain and known to everyone because it is fundamental to salvation. I thought of ROMANS 10:9, and my understanding is that confession here is speaking out that which you have come to believe or be convinced of. Sometimes people answer alter calls and repeat after a preachers, give their names to church councilors and then follow up begins, which sometimes prove to be futile exercise, because confession was not done right. I will appreciate your comments, please.
  • Femi ajakaye on 1 John 1:9 - 12 years ago
It is the verse that delivered me from the spirit of condemnation. Thanks be to God.
  • Sandra on 1 John 1:9 - 12 years ago
Of the promises of the Bible, this is one of my favorite that if we believe and confess our sins, He is true and just to forgive, because by receiving this gift, we are no less better than Jesus Christ to be able to forgive our debtors.
  • Sharon on 1 John 1:5 - 12 years ago
We all should believe that God is the light, and we should not be in the dark.
  • Mark on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
When Jesus said "paradise" while he was on the cross, he was not referring to heaven. Remember, 3 days later, he told Mary not to touch him because he had not yet ascended to his father. You see, death or Hades would be paradise to a person being tortured!
  • Tapiwa Mkorongo on 1 John 1:8 - 12 years ago
If we say we have no sin, we deceive our self and the truth is not in us. This is very true.
  • Bh on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
Please take the scriptures at his word. See Matthew 9:5-6 and Luke 23:43 "today" simply means that, that is when the statement was made, that day. Paradise also includes the Garden of Eden, (earthly restoration of the kingdom) Jesus is a spirit being; (born out of the spirit, is “spirit". John 3:6 after a spiritual church is complete, the earth, and the "thief" will be resurrected to a physical condition; understand and repent and be nourished to a perfect physical condition! No limited "physical" church can accomplish this! It has been tried, see 1Corinthians15:50 "kingdom", equals the government.. Revelation 22:1; 22:17.
  • Ron on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
Our sins are not forgiven because we are baptized. Our sins are forgiven because of the blood of Jesus Christ. Salvation is a free gift. Baptism is something we do after we are saved to proclaim our salvation.
  • George on 1 John 1:7 - 12 years ago
What a glorious promise...even as Jesus instructed us to love the light because if we walk in it our sin is shown. With the promise of forgiveness after repentance.
  • Dan on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
verse 3 There fellowship is with the father and his son Jesus Christ they were taught about this fellowship by Jesus they now wish to tell us what they heard verse 5 This then is the message we have heard of him and declare unto you that God is light and in him is no darkness at all verse 7 If we walk in the light... God is the light as he is in the light... meaning If we walk in God as He is in God we have fellowship one with another not one another one with another the father and his Son Jesus Christ. How do you walk in God 1John 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God... God is light if God who is light dwells in you and you dwell in him its impossible for you to walk in darkness 1John3:23-24 And this is his commandment that you believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave Commandment. And he that keepeth his commandment God dwelleth in him and he in God verse 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him an walk in darkness...meaning were not keeping his commandments ....Because if we are God who is light dwells in us if were not in the light were not keeping his commandments.....again If we say we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness we lie 1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ....The SON OF GOD ....He is antichrist who denieth the father and the son
  • Nui O'Malley on 1 John 1:9 - 12 years ago

  • PR on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
"Forgiveness from “sins” is a free gift based on a condition. ( Acts 2:38) The condition for forgiveness is baptism in water."

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. ( Luke 23:43)

So when exactly was the malefactor baptized?

Either the Lord is wrong or you are.

    W G F's comment about verse 9 on 3/23/2011, 3:35am..
    1) Forgiveness of “sins” is a free gift based on baptism in water after ‘repentance of ‘sin. ( Acts 2:38) “repent and be baptized are ‘ conditions. Forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit are ‘gifts. (see John 5:24) Eternal life is based on repentance from nonbelief to belief.
    2) Scripture ‘DOES not say repent from ‘sins, but repent from sin. (see John 16:8a,9)

    Themba's comment about verse 10 on 3/24/2011, 11:26am...
Believers are not under the law, and they cannot commit sins.
    (Rom.5:13) (Rom.6:14) Believers CAN NOT SIN ( 1 John 3:9)
It is not sin, it is ‘spiritual adultery. (Rom.7:1-5, 1 Cor.6:15-20)

    Moses's comment about verse 9 on 7/09/2011, 9:22am...

Christ DID NOT forgive ‘sin ( John 16:8a,9) Sin is repented from.
He freely forgives ‘sins. ( Acts 2:38) after repentance and baptism.

    Forbes's comment about verse 8 on 10/09/2011, 2:54am..
Rom.3:23 is to non beleivers. And we WERE all non believers.
    Already dead in sin(un-belief) (Rom.5)
  • Darrel Sharp on 1 John 1 - 12 years ago
    In response to : Timothy Wayne George's comment on 2/04/2012, 9:46am 1 John 1
    1) We do not have a relationship “with Christ but “in” Christ. ( John 14:20) (1 Cor.1:30)
    2) We as human beings can never be holy, and Scripture does not ask us to. Scripture says we are holy “in” Christ. (1 Cor.1:30) I “in” Christ, before God, Christ “in” me, before the world. ( John 14:20)
    3) Scripture NEVER claims the Holy Spirit ‘convicts” believers of SIN! John 16:8a, KJV is a mis-translation. Convict is not the proper word here, perhaps ‘confute is.(it DOES NOT SAY SINS.” This Scripture says “the world” not believers.
    4) Forgiveness from “sins” is a free gift based on a condition. ( Acts 2:38) The condition for forgiveness is baptism in water. V.38 also states that eternal life is for believing in Christ. (The ‘un-belief is ‘repented from) ‘ the condition) ( Acts 2:38)
EG: Repent AND be Baptized for the forgiveness of “sins” and you shall receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The first two are conditions, the second two are gifts..
Note: (baptism DOES NOT and CANNOT cleanse from sins, it is a symbol of such cleansing)
    5) Believers cannot sin (un-belief) ( John 16:9) and believers ARE NOT UNDER the Law (Rom.6:14) so they cannot commit “sins”
    6) The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses the new believers “sins” (repentance is from sin to belief)
Note: One IS NOT a ‘sinner because they commit sins. One is a “sinner” because of Adam. (Rom.5:12) so one commits sins because they are a ‘sinner.
    7) When Believers fail, it is S/spiritual adultery.(1 Cor.6:15-20) (Rom.7:1-4)
Note: 1 Cor.6.18 all sin (sins) is outside the body (covered by and under the blood) EXCEPT Sexual sin (spiritual adultery) is against (inside) the body and must be stopped!
Note. S/spiritual adultery does not come under the blood, IT MUST BE STOPPED!
