Your comment was on point. I was thinking the same but could not put it into words with understanding. I know jealous played a key role but did not want to used that obvious term.

    Thanks for Sharing

    Hi Des!

The reason Saul got mad because in the song the woman said Saul killed THOUSANDS and David killed TENS OF THOUSANDS. She gave David a bigger honor in front of the whole court. This is when Saul started hated David. He also realized God was with them.

Hope this helps. Any more questions on this subject please let me know. Be happy to help.

    God bless my friend.

It appears Des, that jealousy was at the root of Saul's anger. Saul, as Israel's King, always received the people's praises & obeisance, but now this young unknown lad, a shepherd at that, could snatch away the King's glory by defeating the Philistine champion & many others during the chase. Saul was probably overjoyed in the victory that day & that 'thousands' slain by him was a great acknowledgement, but then to hear the songs & dances also directed to David for 'his tens of thousands slain' was too much for him to bear in silence. He might have even thought that if David could garner such praise, would his own throne now become precarious? Thus he "eyed David from that day and forward" (v 9).

1Samuel 18:7-8 Why do you think Saul was provoked to anger when he heard this song?

Indeed, "there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother" & one who can be sorely missed for all time.

I fully understand how David and Jonathan souls were knit together . I had one friend in my life that our souls were knit. Ten years after his death I still miss him.

I believe you're correct, that God would not have accepted a new Ark of the Covenant to replace the one stolen by the Philistines & then subsequently returned. If it were not for the great troubles & diseases that were inflicted upon the Philistines by God because of their theft & mishandling of the Ark, then the Ark & its inclusions could well be lost forever & broken up. But God preserved that which was holy & to which His Presence came on behalf of His people. But where is the Ark of the Covenant now? That may be difficult to answer; some say that it's in Heaven ( Revelation 11:19).

In this chapter, we see David's beloved friend, Jonathan, & himself communing after David's encounter with Goliath. You remember that David could not use Saul's armour against Goliath, preferring rather his sling shot with which he was very skilled. So when he & Jonathan met up later, Jonathan offered his royal clothing & armoury to David as he was accepted by King Saul to head up the armies of Israel & needed something more warlike looking when appearing before the King.

So, at this time these pieces of armoury were worn by David for decoration & dignity of his position rather than for use in war. So Jonathan gave him his bow (longbow rather than a crossbow, also 2 Sam 1:22) & his girdle. This was a heavy metal plated belt that served two purposes: to hold the scabbard for his sword & sometimes extended lower to cover & protect the pelvic area. Soldiers also wore a breastplate, which was like the material of the belt but used to protect the abdomen.

And what is this evil spirit that troubled Saul? We know it is not of God, so it must come from Satan.

Verse 8~Saul began to be jealous of David for no reason. David was on Saul's side, but all Saul could think about is what David had done that he had not done. We must guard against jealousy.
  • April on 1 Samuel 18 - 7 years ago
I was afraid this would happen, kind of reminds me of Cain and Able, without the fear of god being present, but the jealousy factor and trying to kill David, this should teach us about what jealousy does to us,we DONT behave very wisely,we REACT and that is what evil prevokes in is humans,I think emotions can be a weakness used against us,but if we stop and think,we go through such ungoodly emotions.

    correction on 1 Sam. 18:9: it was v. 11, not 9.
  • Irene123 on 1 Samuel 18 - 7 years ago
1 Sam.18:9 - I saw a posting on here that said if we follow God faithfully - we will never see death. That's not right. There are many instances of 'mortal' death in following God.
  • Peter A. Okebukola on 1 Samuel 18 - 7 years ago
When one is possessed by the devil, rationality goes off the window. Saul is possessed and obsessed. God was with David and He shielded him from the rants and attacks of Saul. So, if we are on the Lord's side, protection is sure.
  • Irene123 on 1 Samuel 18 - 7 years ago
Saul was Israel's 1st king. Not by God's design, but Israel's - REBELLIOUS Israel. God 'allowed' it, but was with Saul only 2 yrs. Sa. 13:1. After Saul's debaucle with the Amalekites God took His anointing from Saul. The blessings thereafter were not for Saul, but for Israel, so they wouldn't be destroyed. God had to wait for David to mature.
  • Anne on 1 Samuel 18 - 9 years ago
Saul could not kill David because David's purpose was to be King. God had already anointed him and nothing could stop it.

Samuel 18:16 makes reference to Isreal and Judah both being behind David...this seems like a premonition that the tribes would separate after Solomon 's death...does "Isreal " suggest an abbreviation for "all tribes beside Judah "? This is the 1st time in the Old Testament that this delineation was made, but i could be wrong
  • Lee on 1 Samuel 18:10 - 9 years ago
I appreciate all the different versions from Bibles to help understand this verse. I was not sure what to make of "the evil Spirit from God " but now I understand that it comes from within oneself. Steming from envy and uncharitableness. Almost in the same sense where Pharaohs heart was "hardened " by God. Terrifyingly awesome power God almighty. You are wonderful!

The women singing of David 's victory in 1 Sam 17 was the root of Saul 's anger. The anger problem was already something Saul had a problem with, but that song of David killing his TEN THOUSAND was the trigger. Saul had a problem with fear which made him insecure.
  • Ira on 1 Samuel 18 - 10 years ago
Anger is usually a result of fear. Saul being afraid of David went about to kill him, for he know that GOD was with David, and not him. 1 Samuel 18 29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David and Saul became David 's enemy continually.t GOD was with David and had left him.
  • Doris on 1 Samuel 18 - 10 years ago
Jealousy overcame Saul to the point of seeking revenge.

1samual 18 14 BEHAVED WISELY To act in a particular way that is pleasing especially to God and others around you to conduct oneself with confidence and humility to serve faithful in spite of your circumstances always relying on God for the outcome know how to act and react under any given circumstances with discipline and integrity. Possessing the right attitude, the right insight, the right foresight and knowledge to discern and judge appropriately as to what is true and right.
  • John harris on 1 Samuel 18:14 - 10 years ago
This verse tells me that if Christians follow Davids example of how he behaved by using wisdom in all of his actions and his decisions then we can be bless in the same way as we folliw David's pattern in using wisdom in all of our ways, acts, and deeds. just as God was with David and blessed him, He will bless us also.
