Verse 12 calls the sons of Eli "the sons of Belial". In Hebrew the word "Belial" means "without a yoke" or basically "without something above you" without someone of authority. This expression is used to describe something that is bad or worthless. "Sons of Belial" can also be translated as "sons of lawlessness". The second half of verse 12 pretty much sums it up, "they knew not the Lord."
