Suffer means to tolerate. Tolerate means allow or accept. Usurp means to take power or control without the right to. @Jon's comment YES Huldah was a woman! But in 2Kings22:12-14 they went looking for Jeremiah, but he was not in Jerusalem. In Jeremiahs absence, the Kings messengers went to Prophetess Huldah which THEN Gave her the RIGHT to speak. Without the RIGHT to speak from the Kings messengers she would have been Usurped.

I don't understand why we christian insist to go against the word. Our thoughts and ways are not GOD and all we have to do is to obey. The problem is we try to reason out because we think that it is good but with GOD..it is not so.We take one verse and say,how about huldah, deborah, mirriam etc. etc. but can we support a verse that can say we are correct? DISOBEDIENCE is the reason why (adam and eve) there is Genesis 3:23 and 24. God bless!

Concerning women as ministers of any type God most certainly uses women to preach the gospel, for example the first persons to preach the resurrection were women see Matthew 28:10; Mark 16:7 these were woman who went to the tomb and were told not only by angels but by Jesus Himself. Now look at 2nd John chapter 1, John is the elder and the elect lady was the pastor she had a church in her home. Now go to Romans 16 and you will find Paul talking about Phebe a minister in the church (and yes I know what is meant by minister, a Christian teacher and pastor) now pay attention as to the way Paul introduces Priscilla and Aquila the female is named first this is not customarily done which leads the reader to believe that Priscilla was the pastor over that church. There are many more instances of women leaders in the church but these are just a few.

I agree Renee. There were women throughout tge bible who were prophetess and they spoke the word that God sent.Women such as Deborah wife of Lapidoth Judges 4:4-5...and Miriam the sister if Aaron. if he called a woman like renee said look at Acts 2:16-18

@Veronica Knight" I have heard very good women teachers, and I personally have no problem with them if I can tell they are from God. Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
The definition of usurp is "to seize, take over, or appropriate (land, a throne, etc) without authority". Now if a man chooses to be taught by a woman then "he/a man" has given her that authority. At least that is my opinion.

I beleive the Bible to be literal in it 's meanings. There is also a scripture that says that all things are permissable, but NOT all things are righteous. So, I advise to follow the scripture, ask for guidance from the HOLY SPIRIT in prayer. Women can be teachers of the word, but not a responsible source of authority. However, there are plenty of examples in the Bible where women were used of GOD and followed GOD in their behaviour. Ask and you shall receive. Ask JESUS.

A heavy spirit of confusion is upon me when it comes to this scripture. When I read this I recieve it as a guide for us all, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. what I can not get settled in my spirit is are ALL of these churches wrong who have woman in the pulpit? Are they worng for having women Elders?, Are they wrong for having women pastors over churches? If so why isn't there more MEN of God teaching against this and exsposing it for what it is. For those like myself who hungers to know and do what thus says the lord. I am fairly new to walking with Christ as my Savior, but I study heavly, and I want to get it right this time for He has gave me a second chance and I don't want it to be in vain. I will not knowingly be a part of anything that God speaks against.

if anyone tells you a woman can teach in a church even though the Bible teaches against such an action lead them to Proverbs Chapter 6 vs 16 and 17chapter 6 vs 16-17 it speaks of a lying tongue being an abomination to God...
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
the Word of God does tell the elder women to teach the younger women tthere is a time and a place for this teaching. the women are to be silent in the churches according to the Bible..
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
we have some people come up with excuses replying that the scripture came at a certain point in time if the New Testament is too old for you what are you studying??
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago

  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
if a woman says she enjoys teaching the Word of God totally ignoring the scripture1st Timothy chapter 2 verse 12 she can just be honest and let people know she enjoys being disobedient to God...# sad case
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
people be careful believe in the Word of God never believe in people who try to pervert the Word of God God will hold them accountable with the penalties or whatever he see Is fit....
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
it isn't hard to understandthe Word of God says I suffer not a woman to teach.the Word of God also says the Unbelieve faith go without effect. this means if you don't believe one Scripture in the Bible you are not saved or sanctified....
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
it is really bold when people come in and say they don't agree with the Word of God the Holy Spirit does does not push a person to say such a message he or she who doesn't believe the Word of God is not of God but of the Satan...
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
all Scripture is inspired by God read the first 7 words 10 times" I suffer not a woman to teach" it is disgusting and disgraceful to try to mislead people about the order of the Most High God# so sad but serious
  • Brian Williams on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 10 years ago
Show me scripture word Jesus told a woman to preach in a church? if it is in the Bible I can't wait to read it...
  • Grace on 1 Timothy 2 - 11 years ago
vs. 4 says that God wants no man to perish but rather He wants all to be saved. It is quite unfortnate that the reverse is the case as a lot of people are perishing rather than getting saved. Vs. 9 says that women should be moderate in dressing. When we use make ups, we tell God that He didn't do a perfect job in creating us hence the need of "remaking" ourselves. This doesn't portray modesty likewise the wearing of trousers, rings, hair attachments and stuffs like that. Let your moderation be known unto all men THE LORD IS AT HAND Phil. 4:5-8.
  • Eugene on 1 Timothy 2 - 11 years ago
1Tim 2 vs 9 - just to also add something related on dressing. Deuteronomy 22 vs 5 instructs that a woman should not wear what pertains to a man and a man should not also wear what pertains to a woman. I therefore do not think that it is scripturally appropriate for a woman to wear trousers or for a man to wear skirt or dress i.e. woman gown or blouse. Also, based on 1Corinthians 11 vs 1-15 women should cover their hair while praying and men should not cover thief hair while praying. It is true We are in the dispensation of grace, however deliberate disobedience moves us away from the realm of grace and exposes us to satanic attack - Ecclesiastes 10:8
  • BSP on 1 Timothy 2:14 - 11 years ago
Adam was not deceived as this verse shows. This shows his deliberate disobedience to God. Adam tried to place the blame on God and the Eve, but this scripture clearly shows that Adam was not deceived, but Eve was.
  • Timothy Wayne George on 1 Timothy 2:9 - 11 years ago
Modesty is the key, and humility of dress, as well as spirit, so as to not bring attention to themselves. Looking nice is not the issue, but worshiping God in spirit, and truth. Be an example for other believers in purity of dress, as well as thought. When we gather together to worship the Lord our mind should be on the Lord Jesus Christ, and giving Him all the glory. As for as teaching the older women are to teach the younger women how to love their husbands.

Is God speaking in this chapter. I'm trying to grasp the understanding of 1 Timothy Chapter 1:9-15
  • Theresa on 1 Timothy 2:9 - 11 years ago
I was reading in the 1 Timothy 2:9 where it is saying in like manner, that a woman adorn themselves in modest apparel, not with broided hair, or gold, or pears, or costly array.
  • Ruban on 1 Timothy 2:5 - 11 years ago
He is the son of God so he is the mediator. That's all.
  • Marion on 1 Timothy 2 - 11 years ago
The discussion continues about women preaching. If they say God called them , that is between them and God. I often wonder about the men that say God called them that do not act in a Godly manner. If we continue working our salvation out ,God has the rest.
  • Evelyn A. Rhodes on 1 Timothy 2:11 - 11 years ago
Such a beautiful scripture and thought of God. Another example of the beauty and sacred place of woman.
  • Michael Ugochukwu Mbuko on 1 Timothy 2:5 - 11 years ago
No matter what, all we have is one God. No Shiva, or whatever but just one God and one mediator. No Mary or whatsoever but Jesus Christ. Praise God.
  • Amy on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 11 years ago
The verse clearly says "THE man." Wycliffe's bible says "hosebonde." [husband] [as does Young's Literal.] Only corrupt versions have translated it as A man. [as in *any* man.]

However, I do not believe that women are to be elders - MEN who are instructed to do the preaching and teaching in a gathering of Christians. The passages which discuss this are the only place we need to go for this subject, not 1 Timothy 2:12. It only speaks of a wife usurping authority over her husband. [trying to teach him.] It is not a wife's place to teach her husband. That's all this says. Because of the other passages describing what an elder is - a man... - we have our mandate. That is all we need.
  • Minister John Lang on 1 Timothy 2:12 - 11 years ago
The Word of God says what it means and mean what it says, and we can't make it say what we want it to,to fit our life style, but should make our life style fit the Word of God, God bless and God keep.
