Paul was saying to Timothy is that this christan walk is not easy but, if you would take heed to my saying you will be alright. So he encourages him to give himself to reading the word of God and pray etc... doing this will help him grow spiritually in doing this will allow God to use him in every area of his life.
What will help us to guard against excusing ourseives from fullfilling our obligations to God? One important way to fight that tendency is to regularly meditate on the meaning of our dedication vow. In erssence we promised God that we would put the doing of his will foremost in our lives, andwe want to keep that promise. Therefore, at times we need to ask ourselves: 'Do i still as determined to live up to my dedication to God as i did at the time of my baptism? Orhave i lost some of my initial zeal in the years since then.
The warning by Paul here was against the tendency to "beg off" from embracing God given responsibilities and it also replies to christians today. We realize that we need to be determined never to take our christian responsibilities lightly, or to allow our zeal for Gods service to deminish. After rendering sacred service is a matter of life or dealth.
"False teachers forbid as evil what God has allowed, and command as a duty what he has left indifferent." Departure of the faith, departure from the one and only "living God", how sad it is that many deny Jesus. The evil has stepped into high places of society even into the core of government. 1Timothy4 is eye opening.
