57¶ And they that had laid hold on Iesus, led him away to Caiaphas the high Priest, where the Scribes and the Elders were assembled. 58But Peter followed him afarre off, vnto the high Priests palace, and went in, and sate with the seruants to see the end. 59Now the chiefe Priests and Elders, and all the councell, sought false witnesse against Iesus to put him to death, 60But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, 61And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the Temple of God, and to build it in three dayes.

Mt 26:59 All the council. The Sanhedrin. Sought false witness. No one could be condemned legally without at least two witnesses who agreed (De 17:6 19:15). "One witness", it was said, "was no witness". As there was no true testimony to a charge that could be punished with death, they sought false witness.
