It should be understood by all and sundry that this was Paul's admonition to Timothy, he was trying to prepare the understanding of Timothy towards the event that must surely come to pass. And he tends to describe it as a perilous time which means a dangerous time. Here he talked about lovers of themselves than lovers of God. This simply means in such time the love of many will be selfish and their obedience to God will be narrow and shallow because one cannot obey whom he does not love. He went as far as making the immoral and promiscuous engagement and commitment of many shall abound. Then after that phase, he then talked about those who will really want to serve God as that they will suffer persecutions and tribulation.

Paul was talking to Timothy here. He was talking about "religious people". I have just became a student of " rightly dividing the word of truth" and it is amazing how God's word speaks to us if we just take time to realize who, what, when and where. Beware of religion my brothers and sisters....listen to Paul 2Tim 3:10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine.

The bible is the word of God.A very powerful book which can change every thing, it gives hopes and grace. Because the bible was made by God by His unquestionable love for all of the human being he create. You and me is one of the main reason why God decided to book bind His word, this is the testament which is written how he create us and save us from the grave. All we to do is follow His word and that is the bible thw word of God....

  • Bob Tucker on 2 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
Evil has been with us from the beginning. It is
not as though we will look out our windows one
day and find the world has "gone to hell in a
hand basket." What we will find however, as we
reflect on the history of the "church" is a
"body" that is in total spiritual "melt down."
Jesus said "Ye are the light of the world,a city
set on a hill cannot be hid. Let YOUR light so
shine before men so they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven." There was a
time in our not too distant past that people knew,
"they're on their way to church, 'cause they got
their Sunday go to meet'n clothes on." Today you
would say, "are these people are on their way to
church? 'cause they are wear'n 'tank tops,' 'flip flops,' and shorts." Try to get in to see the
President wearing "tank tops," "flip flops" and
shorts! I use this one example,(there are others)
because clothes are a reflection of what's on the
"inside." If we think God is not concerned about
how we present ourselves to him, I suggest we read
the Bible. Before we start on the"bad" people let's clean up our own house then we can see how to help those in need. "We have found the enemy
    and it is us."
  • Micjoh37 on 2 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
Stay away from people that you discern have a form of godliness, that you discern have no power or GOD-anointing upon their lives, turn away from them because they profess to have something or pretend to have something that in reality, don't have and God has pointed them out to those who spiritually discern.

Additional understanding to the Word of God. And i want to share my own iterpretation to this. Some say that the bible is only made by man, made by intellect people, like making a book, a magazine, a newspaper & others, but the truth is YES you are right it is made of man,but aaccording to ( 2 Tim 3:16)ll All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. This is meaning of the bible, the answer is already in this verse and you will not loss,if you analyze this. And we know that it is the Word of God ( John 1:1-14) And if we defend our faith in the bible we will not have a mistake, but instead we will have eternal life, and the bible speaks of eternal life to those who will seek the Truth, ( John 8:32) John 5:39-Search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they that testifies of me. Meaning we will have eternal life through the scriptures of thru the bible itself. Scriptures means word of God, in other words Scriptures it is the Old testament and New Testament. We cannot receive eternal life in other things. And if we don't have eternal life we cannot be save. And the scriptures is telling us that it is God who testifies for all of these. Nobody can testifies who Jesus Christ is, it is the scriptures, and nobody can prove that we will receive eternal life thru our good works, we can only base our salvation to the word of God or to the scriptures. There are some people who made man made books with their intellects but never explain how we can receive eternal life, God is a Spirit its a fact we cannot twist the word of God 1+1= 11 Its a fact we cannot remove this, when God said I am spirit, without body, without shape meaning God is invisible. That is why thru the scripture we inherit eternal life but there must be something to do and everything is written in this book to have eternal life and it begins first to have faith in God, and trust God in order to receive eternal life this is my explanation about this scripture. We must not worship God just to attend churches but we don't know what we are worshipping so there is a compusion for the word of God, we must find where is the church that teaches that God is a Spirit thru this we will know that we are in the Truth. Baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and baptized of the Holy Spirit of God ( Acts 2:38) ( John 3:3-7)
God bless you all...Jesus loves you.

  • THE SANCTUARY NOT MADE WITH HANDS on 2 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
THE EARTHLY SANCTUARY WAS A TYPE OF THE TRUE SANCTUARY IN HEAVEN NOT MADE WITH HANDS. CHRIST OUR HIGH PRIEST IS MINISTERING IN THE MOST HOLY PLACE FOR THE SALVATION OF ALL CREATION. WHEN YOU READ THE BOOK OF HEBREWS YOU WILL SEE HIM AS YOU SAW AARON ON THE DAY OF ATTONEMENT. THE SANCTUARY IS A MESSAGE TO ALL WHO WANT TO KNOW WHAT JESUS IS DOING. THE DAY OF ATTONEMENT IS ABOUT TO CONCLUDE. THE BLOOD OF THE SIN OFFERING IS ABOUT TO BE TRANFERED TO THE HEAD OF SATAN TO BEAR THE INIQUITY OF SINNERS.THE SCAPEGOAT SATAN, IS ABOUT TO TO PAY FOR ALL HIS EVIL DEEDS AND DECEPTIONS. THE DAY OF ATTONEMENT IS SOON. STUDY THE SANCTUARY ON EARTH AND YOU WILL KNOW WHAT CHRIST OUR HIGH PRIEST IS DOING NOW. ACCORDING OT PROPHECY JESUS MOVED FROM THE HOLY PLACE TO THE MOST HOLY PLACE ON OCT 22,1844, MARKING THE BEGINNING OF THE END. PROBATION IS ABOUT TO CLOSE, AND THERE WILL BE NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SIN THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS.
  • Joe glascock on 2 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
Yes, I agree, these are perilous times! and weshould "be about our fathers business", not just saing our own souls, but trying to bring as many people with us as possiblre when we are raptured up, making sure we sow the seeds on good ground, letting God give the increase, and praying for those in need.

  • Carlyle on 2 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
The comments seen above show an innate sense of knowing the coming catastrophe that we are already in, but demonstrate the utter failure of the churches to implement the "Great Commission" -- to (1)make disciples (committed to learning how to become disciplers under close, personal supervision); (2)to baptize disciples (not merely "converts" or infants) in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; and (3) to congregate those baptised disciples for accountable teaching, and for watchfully preserving the commandments of The Lord of us, Jesus Christ, without error or corruption. Though one has compassion for the spiritual infancy of most of the commenters here, one must say that (1)their state is revealed by their unfamiliarity with Biblical doctrine, and (2) that can be changed if they are willing to become disciples, accountable to mature disciplers who will instruct them in answering for their responsibility to learn of God's Word, Will, and Ways. This is how Timothy was discipled by Paul, who asked him to disciple others as he had been discipled, thus founding true churches that practice the Great Commission.
  • Dan on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
I truly believe we are in perilous times. Our government seems to have many of the traits described in this chapter. Verses 5 & 6 are particularly pertinent--speaking of those who have a form of godliness, but deny God's power. They creep into houses. Isn't this describing the inocuous ways evil is entering our homes??--the internet, television and the dribble that bombards our families such as those programs on television that portray nothing but discontent, discord and unhappiness. Have you ever watched any of the soap operas on tv such as the young and the worthless, general horsepittal, etc. There is never anything portrayed but unhappiness and un-rest. Never a pleasant word. Always revenge and hate.
    Just my opinion
  • Esther on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
Yes the end of the age is almost here. That is the end of man's ways, not the end of the earth. I wonder where did the 7 years of tribulation came from? Is it Biblical? If it's true then no flesh will be saved alive. Jesus Christ will return in the middle of WWIII. Any mass destruction weapon will be use, so 7 yrs? Don't think so, it's written in Revelation it will only be 3 1/2 yrs. The other, it's having a righteous or religious show but in actuality doesn't care enough to obey the truth of God. Even Jesus Christ is the Son of God, He obeyed Him. Jesus Christ didn't came into this world to promote himself. Why do people don't believe that? He came preaching the Gospel of the coming Kingdom of God, where He will return on earth as King.

I too don't believe we are in tha last days however we are in the last times. In the year of the fig tree..As Father siad, only he knows the time he will tell the angels to blow the 7th trumpit..But its all falling into his word..
  • Kee on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
The purpose of this scripture is not to bring attention to the ways of the world, but it is meant for exhortation to the Christians. It stands to encourage, exhort and empower us in the faith. Also, standing as a reminder that we should not focus on the things before us; instead remember those things that we were taught and not lose sight of the VICTORY that we have because Christ died for and redeemed us.

I'm not sure what world you guys are living in, but this world is worse than ever. Just watch the news or read the newspaper. HOWEVER, the word of God reminds us that we are in the world, but not of the world.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the VICTORY that overcometh the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:4

We are to hold on to and remember our VICTORY which is our faith. We can speak word after word, but the only word that really matters is GOD's. Hold on to your faith, trust God, stand on and live by HIS word!!
  • Travis on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
I must disagree, I find this chapter very pertinent to the world as it came to be in the past century. "leading captive silly women laden with sins" - what is that if not a reference to feminism and the liberation movement that in actuality has made women not the mothers of their family but slaves to money and hedonism?

"Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof" - how many secularists put their own belief in humanity above the truth of God?

"those that live godly in Christ shall suffer persecution" - note how several prominet athiests have suggested that teh Pope should be arrested?

thinsg like democracy and cheap communication are fleeting, they are the eye of the storm, easily swept away by darker skies.

We may not be at the peak of human iniquity yet, but we are certainly not getting better. While
millions starve, while murders are barely a matter for the news, while families are torn apart and humans are forced into slavery through chains or taxes, no, I do not want to "live like it is". I would not take this ruinous jumble of cheats, hucksters, liars and thieves over the splendour of God's Kingdom.
  • Ojore on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
i kinda agree with Trent veiws yes the world is different but we must remember that Gods Words are infoulable therefore are always correct because God is same today and yesterday never changes . i beleive what timothy is refuring too is the fact that is about salvation thru Jesus the Christ
  • Trent on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
Even though many Christians speculate the end is near, I don't think we're in the last days.

Many people think this world is getting worse and worse, but I disagree and think it is better than ever!

    Reasons:

    1. The world is not as violent as it used to be. Many countries used to have public executions as part of their entertainment. London, Paris, Rome had numerous killings of people in public for children to see. Even Saddam Hussein, considered one of the worst offenders of modern day, was not even publicly executed, but in private.

    2. People are healthier and living longer. Cigarette ads are banned from TV now and banned from indoors in the U.S. Remember when they allowed smoking on airplanes? Society is improving.

    3. Internet and Mobile Communications - we are able to communicate more often and more efficiently than ever. While you can find some bad that can come from it, there's even more good. People are strengthening their relationships and reconnecting past and forgotten relationships, such as through Facebook.

    4. Crime rates are lower. Cars are safer than ever. Fewer gangs. Gun control. Many statistics show great improvement.

    5. Slavery is diminished. Can you think of a single country that supports slavery? It was rampant in the Bible days and the U.S. had a civil war over it, but people are now much more at piece and more united than ever. The U.S. even has a half black president and women have equal rights, including to run for U.S. president. There is no chance that would have happened 100 years ago. What progress!

I could go on. The world is better than ever. We should live like it is.
  • Travis on 2 Timothy 3 - 14 years ago
Truly, we must live in the end days now.
