(1 Peter Part 1):
Peter wrote his letters to the Diaspora which is the designation for the Jews who had been displaced from Jerusalem. He wrote 1 Peter around 63 AD and 2 Peter right before 67 AD. 1 Peter was written to warn the believers about the threat against the Church from the outside world. 2 Peter was written to warn the believers about the threat against the Church from inside the church, false teachers, and false teaching. The theme is persecution and suffering, and Peter warns the believing Jews that the persecution against the Church is going to intensify.
1 Peter 1:1 - Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
The word scattered is the Greek word DIASPORA, which is the title and designation for Jews who are displaced from out of Jerusalem and are living in foreign strange countries.
1 Peter 1:2 - Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
He says, elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father. We hear the word elect used a lot. Many major commentators, scholars, and teachers will tell you that the word elect applies to all Christians, that all Christians are elect by God for salvation. But this specific word elect, EKLEKTOS, is a specific designation for Jewish people. They are the elect of God.
If we look at 1 Peter 1:2 and read Peter's introduction here, we might say that Peter is writing to believers here, and so he is calling them the elect. However, he's talking to the Jewish believers. He then says grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. It doesn't give it here, but the word multiplied is actually an Optative Mood in the Greek. It's a wish. May grace and peace be multiplied unto you is what it is literally saying. It's a wish by Peter.
Verses 8-13
Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Here we see the summary; all is vanity (verse 8); and we see the conclusion of he whole matter in the last verse. Of course no one can keep all of God's commandments apart from the Spirit of Christ in them. We see some reference to Christ it would seem in verse 10 referring to the nails fastened by the masters of assemblies; it would seem. We see mention as well of the "preacher" namely Solomon himself writing Proverbs; apparently before this book even realizing the vanity of human efforts and their limitations as fearing God is the beginning of wisdom. We see this in Proverbs 1:7 as well as 9:10. Proverbs 7:2 mentions keeping commandments; although we seem to see a lot more of that sentiment in Psalms especially Psalm 119 which David wrote.
Let us learn to avoid such a deep dive into worldly pleasures and pursuits that Solomon delved into seeing the problems that it caused him. If the world's richest man at that time could commend the simple pleasurs of a common laborer as sufficient we should keep that in mind no matter how much material possessions we attain as it has no value if hoarded for our own self interests and will certainly be gone at death. Let us be wise stewards of the money and time we live as a shadow on earth.
1Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
Let us examine some prophetic verses that seem to correlate with some of these ideas of the end of the age as opposed to the end of one's life.
Luke 21:25
25 "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Jeremiah 1:11-12 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.
12Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.
Ezekiel 26:13 And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.
Revelation 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all.
Three principles set the worlds of which the fulness of God is invested in Jesus Christ: Principle of Similitude, principle of Association and the Principle of Reconciliation. The Rule of Three sets King Saul as 'after our likeness'. God chose him and anointed him from so many and Samuel wrote it in a book."And Samuel, said to all the people, See ye him whom theLordhath chosen," And he was anointed. (1 Sam.10.24, 26-27) The sons of Belial who despised the man chosen by God belonged to the natural world. Saul held his silence as Christ would have so we here two worlds side by side. Along with him were God had chosen. "And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched."
Now in ch.14.2 he isseated under the tree of pomegranate and it is a symbol for fruitfulness. Already his disobedience places his throne on shaky grounds and the Philistians were a token of God's displeasure. In order to indicate the Spirit introduces two rocks Bozez, on a north south axis,"there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh./The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah."(1 Sam.14.4-5) north indicates Christ the judge.
What of his band of men? "and the people that were with him were about six hundred men." 6x100 of which number 6 refers to sons of Belial who will not enter into the rest of God. In the everlasting Covenant because of his disobedience he has come the shadow of a tree which is noted for abundance but of the cherub as wilful as Lucifer. " Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations." (Isa.14.9) This was fulfilled by the death of Saul He was buried under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh.
In the life of Abraham we see his understanding of God changing progressively. Moses refer to God as Jehovah ('God is one'-Deut.6.4).
However the Spirit places Elohim as the name of the deity where Abraham is created 'after our image' so as true Vine the intrinsic quality of the branch to the Vine corresponds to the Father-Son relationship. The latter had a glory that was with God as signified by the Word which was with God. It does not go away even where we consider the divine Will and its fulfilment. In this context what is a parable but a similitude, principle of which must rest in setting natural world and the world framed by the word where all things consist of Jesus Christ an in whom is the fulness of God. (Col.1.19) Principle of Similitude can be set on the basis of plentifulness of the tree. Jesus Christ as the tree of life. Principle of Association similarly on the basis of the many branches, none of which exists outside the context of the tree. By the same token God setting Jesus as a plant. The Salvation report of Isaiah "For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground," shall come to pass. It is what we find in Rev.22.1. We shall come to it anon.
"And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of theLord, the everlasting God." This name is different than what God had revealed to him, El Shaddai 17.1 is different than l Elyn, and he has his high Priest Melchizedek who visited Abram and blessed him. It certainly works fo his new name Abraham is a vindication of the everlasting Covenant. "And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God./And he blessed him." (Gen.14.18-20)
We have the third principle which reconciles the many names of God in the Son who as the word became flesh said, "I and my Father are one."(Jn.10.30)
Oh, good Lord I come before you today to pray for my loved ones and for complete strangers. May you bless them with your compassion and understanding as they find their way to
you. As Jesus taught us to love one another; May I come to others with the same love! May I praise at your feet as they did in the bible. Lord, you are great and wonderful loving God. Thank you for continues love and affecting, the mercy and unconditional love. The Begotten son of God has washed me clean for he is the only way. Thank you gracious king for I am unworthy of such love and compassion you give me. May I and anyone who may stumble upon this Praise you for the unbelievable gifts you give us, for today that you so merciful give us. Thank you oh my lord, you love me when no one would but you raise me up and wash me with blood of the holy lamb. Gave me a enteral life with you my creator. Thank you, Lord, Amen!!
"And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:"
Luke 17:21
"Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."
Blessings
"And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God." (Gen.21.33)
By tradition the tree is identified as a tamarisk tree. As planted of God the patriarch is the Father of many nations. The grove naturally translates as with the mount of congregation, trees of righteousness. (Isa.14.13)These signify the 144,000 standing with the Lamb on mount Sion. The Father Son relationship is continued where Abraham stands in place of God. This is especially brought out in the tempting of God by asking him to sacrifice his only 'begotten' Son Isaac who is the heir of promise.
In the Genesis passage preceding the key verse we have the significance of the covenant Abraham makes with Abimelech, and it is helpful to explain what the Spirit means with God tempting Abraham. "And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves."(v.28) It indicated in place of an oath by accepting them he conceding the ownership to Abraham. Seven as a number established the Law of the Spirit stood as Guarantor. It is same with seven days in the first chapter the book of Genesis. The believer came into the covenant and entered into the rest of God that the day Seven signified. He was holy as what God had made as holy. The well at Beersheba, the blessing rightfully belonged to Abraham. King of Geraar also accepts the truth. "Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines."(v.32) Later we have Saul seated under the Pomegranates tree when besieged by the Philistines.(1 Sam.14.2)
"And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham."(Gen.22.1) Abraham believed and it was counted to him for righteousness. It the light of the everlasting covenant the Spirit addresses his work, and not that he really call back His promise of the meaning of Abraham. He was no more Abram but Abraham. (Gen.17.15)
" That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:/The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints," (Eph.1.17-18) In the knowledge of Christ there is spirit of wisdom to work with; to know the hope of his calling is another. We do not even know how we should pays as we ought. St Paul speaks of "for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered./ And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." (Rom.8.26-27) Our ministry also begins from the encouragement we have of our indwelling Spirit.
"Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up."
In other words what God has set in his Will shall be fulfilled. Not an iota shall be left out. Hence the entire Bible the Spirit sets forth His will is in pluperfect tense. The first sentence of the Scripture is locus classicus of the Father Son relationship. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Gen.1.1 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending." This applies to the Son as well as in the sense of the Word which was with God.
Eden is also called garden of God (Ezek.28.13)The river went out from Eden to water the garden of Eden which in set in mid air, or the firmament-" And God called the firmament Heaven."-1.8). There is a mountain of God in the sides of the north, to which Lucifer or the covering cherub willed, "I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north."(Isa.14.13) Mount Zion is on the north So fall of the cherub occurs somewhere else. "For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation." (Ps.132.13). Between the mount of the congregation is the great divide, where the garden is located. The four river heads or four angels are set in charge over the lands mentioned in Gen.2.10-14 " and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads." It is clear that the river Euphrates is not of the river associated with the earth. In fact it is associated with will of the Father who has planted the trees which shall be called as trees of righteousness.
It is in the sense we have several mention of trees in the scriptural narrative. For example, "and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet."(Exod.15.25). Another one made Jonathan the king's son enightened,"He put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, " He is set as a double for Christ because he became a curse for us.
Heavenly Father, I lift up Ashley, Cs and their baby's travels-past, present, and future. Whether they go or stay, lead them by Your Spirit. Let every trip be safe, smooth, joyful, and covered in divine protection.
"He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." - Psalm 91:11
I agree with you about KJV Onlyism. Those who hold this view struggle to present their case as to why they believe this way. And you are correct; the translators did not share the same view.
God Bless!!!
I, too, remember another user here named Jesse who came on here within the last two years.
I do think that this site could be improved with unique user names.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed James. I should have something to post from 1 Peter by tomorrow evening.
God Bless!!!
Thanks, brother, for bringing that to our attention! I do remember another user with my name and I agree that it can cause some confusion. Hopefully those who are moderating this site can remedy this to where there cannot be duplicate user names.
Blessings to you also!
Ecclesiastes ends the book with deep wisdom and, in my opinion, this chapter is a call to spiritual seriousness. In the end, everything will be brought to light; and the simplicity of true faith, even with all knowledge, what truly matters is to fear God and keep His commandments.
I enjoyed James and is looking forward to 1 Peter!
God bless you.
I believe for a Christian to glorify God is the way we humble ourselves and let the Spirit of God transform us so that from the outside looking in onlookers glorify God for his obvious work in us.
In Revelation 1:12-20 we see the Church identified as the candlesticks ( which is literally lampstands.)
Lampstands are filled with oil, "representing the Holyspirit"
That's what we are. lampstands.
The lampstands shine there light on the one in the midst of them. The Lord Jesus Christ!
The light is not to give glory to the lampstands, it shines on Christ.
Matthew 5:16 reads "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Glorifying God is when people can look at a Christian and see that he's a follower of Christ and give God all the glory for what he's done in that person's life. He shows that God is active in his life and true to his word.
I hope this helps.
God bless.

1Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.
2Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Here the theme of preserving wealth for a "rainy day" is considered. We can certainly apply this to giving to others as well.
The idea of working hard rather than paying attention to detracting potential issues from our goal is then focused on in verses 3 and 4; with our inability to know when things may prosper covered by God's plans in verse 5; and finally
In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good. (verse 6). This perhaps could be compared with the parable of Matthew 20 where workers go different times into the vineyard. God's word doesn't go out void but accomplishes His purposes ( Isaiah 55:11).
The rest of the passage encourages remembrance of the brevity of youth and days of old age and final judgment after this life; nonetheless gives the idea of once again enjoying the youth with a closing thought in verse 10
10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
This shows how one should enjoy the pleasures of youth yet remove fleshly vices that will be judged later on and perhaps cause further suffering and shortening of life in later years.
We now will consider chapter 12 which I may have expounded on before; where I see a dual concept of things that come to pass with a person in advanced years and which seem to parallel end times ideas as well. Since that seems to be a novel concept I am open to opinions on that matter.
