Music does indeed provide much comfort & help especially in times of anxiety. Of course, with good music coupled with truthful encouraging words, then the song can truly be uplifting to one's soul & of praise to God by one's spirit.

Music, as many things we partake in life, is dependent on the person's understanding & appreciation of it. What I like to listen to may not necessarily be another's preference. And that's fine, as good music can minister in its own special way to different people. And so to with a band: various types of music is heard & it becomes one's preference to listen to them or not. I'm not sure whether you're referring to secular bands or Christian. You need to judge whether the words & music conform to your liking & what is proper & wholesome in God's Sight. The best music I find are those that truly cause me to thank & worship God for Who He is & all He has done for me. Hymns do that for me but may not for another who has never been inclined towards them.

You may have to research that one from the Web as the name is not in the Bible. I believe that the name has to do with a Sumerian god & has nothing to do with the Living God of the Bible.

  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 15:5 - 4 years ago
I understand the order of appearance as follows (aside from the two Marys, Joanna & other women) from 1 Corinthians 15:5: Peter first saw the empty tomb. Then all them together (the twelve, which included Judas' replacement, Matthias). After that over 500 of Christ's followers. Then again all the apostles including James saw Jesus & finally Paul himself as the last apostle who had that encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Chris, thank you so much for your time and all you have said I think has validity. Of course my feelings about this matter are bordering on what seemingly is the lack of value of earthly lives back then. Of course this all points to that fallen angel Satan. He likes causing unbelief and doubt where he can. That's what he is doing to me. He has NOT got me to disbelieve any of God's word or weakened my faith I talked to my pastor about this and he did not have an answer for me but told me he would be trying to find a reasonable explanation for the games . If the games did in fact lessen the severity of upcoming battles then that sounds like it was worthwhile.

Thank you for allowing me to read the Bible. Google has never let me in for years. I went offline when my husband died. When I came back, I forgot my password. I'm 74 and can't recall things like I used to. So hope you mind letting me continue here, from time to time. May God bless you and your families.

    Sincerely, becki marsh

I hope you can receive other views here Marcus, or else find further explanation & expansion of this biblical account elsewhere. It may well be that this "game" was actually a part of a greater battle that could have been pursued or prevented depending on the outcome of these 24 engaged in sword play. Not having the full story before us, leaves one speculating, so any opinion may be worthy of consideration.

I did find the following by renowned commentator, Charles Ellicott: on verse 14: "To avoid unnecessary bloodshed between the tribes of a common parentage, and also, perhaps, to prevent the weakening of the nation in the face of their common Philistine foe, Abner proposes that the struggle should be decided by a combat between a few champions chosen on either side, and Joab immediately accepts the proposal. Hervey (Speaker's Commentary) aptly compares this combat to that of the Horatii and Curiatii, under strikingly similar circumstances and with similar results, as described by Livy (I., 100 10:25)."

And to verse 17: "The combat of the twelve on each side having decided nothing, the two hosts joined battle. Abner and the Israelites were worsted (sic). The numbers engaged were probably not large, as the whole number of the slain was nineteen on David's side, and 360 on that of Israel ( 2Samuel 2:30-31). It was, however, a turning-point in the struggle."

These comments still don't answer your question, but I can only assume that with the lower sanctity of life of those days, particularly in times of warfare or when clear or assumed disobedience to the Law was evidenced, that the lives that could have been used in full-blown battle could also be used in any prelude to it. The question that actually came to my mind was how was it not possible that at least a couple of men could have survived this 24 man encounter, even with suffering severe injuries, but that all suffered the same fate. I guess some things we will never know.

There is no such thing as just entertainment. There's always a message behind the entertainment. When we choose to be entertained, we choose to receive the message that is there behind the entertainment. Research your music groups. What is their message?

We want a lot of things, and they are usually centered on US, or ourselves. God is really trying to open our view to look at others and pray for the needs of others. It is a scientifically proven fact that people gain more when giving than receiving. Sharing what is in our hearts is what he truly wants to hear.

In the same verse of Scripture, the Apostles are called out with James. Thus leading me to the conclusion that the 12 here are not in reference to the Apostles. Another fact is Judas is dead, and no long among the Apostles. So the question of an astute student is, who are the 12 Paul the Apostle is referring to? I do believe Paul is including Mary, Joanna, and Martha among this number. Pauls's information would have come second hand either from Peter or James. Which I believe most likely this was an accounting relayed unto Paul by Cephas, Peter the Apostle.

I believe Isaiah 20 may reveal to us that we must be want and be willing to obey the Lord. For three years Isaiah walked naked and without shoes because he was told to do so by the Lord. How he must have been judged by people! Isaiah was doing the Lord's will. Likely he was judged unhinged, possibly belittled maybe shunned, uncomfortable physically without his sackcloth and shoes but this work of Isaiah was deemed to be written in the inspired word of God so we should learn from it. This somewhat reminds me of Job's ordeals. We do not know the reason for our trials. I believe Isaiah's time was roughly 750 years before Christ.

Peace to all. Please pray for His will to be done and effort to accept it.

Alex's comments about the Thief on the Cross. He was baptised when he heard Jesus Words, remember Jesus said you are made Clean by hearing My Words . That i have spoken unto you, Aka as the Water of the WORD . That living water That Jesus explained to the woman at the well. Yes the well is deep . But Jesus was the WORD made flesh and blood thus its no wonder that the thief was made clean by hearing the WORD. Remember one of the writters says the Church has to be made clean by the water of the Word, that living water is simply the H.G . Remember John said when Jesus spoke of that living water it was the Spirit he speake of. The H.G. was not yet given b/c that Christ was not yet glorified. Thats y the Priest use to apply the blood to the tip of the right ear, It was prophetic that when the lamb of God wd come we wd be made Clean by hearing his Words which ARE spirit and life . the H.G. Our right ear is simply hearing and understanding his voice. divine understanding ,Flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you but my father in heaven which is divine understanding that living water etc. That good seed is sown in our hearts by hearing, As Mary was not penatrated by anyman but only by hearing was the good seed sown in her Womb Thats y she said be it unto me according to thy Word then was the word made flesh and blood, The living word not the written word ,as there is no blood in the written word but only in the living WORD. When Jesus said my words are spirit and life thats the living word that was made spirit and life, flesh and blood. But he wants to impregnate all of humanity with his precious seed the living Word. Thats y the prophets saw the world in travail and birth pains simply b/c of that good seed the Word ,the field being the world, our hearts being womb that is gonna birth a BABY CHRIST which is the H.G. the Child of PROMISE She brought forth a man Child that is gonna rule ALL NATIONS. WHICH IS TH H.G. that Child of promise thus he is trul the son of man

Thanks so much for the reply Chris but it is not sufficient enough to relieve my feelings regarding this matter. What you say seems to be about the way I understand it. What I am saying is that this all seems like a total misuse of soldiers in battle. Each of these men that lost their lives in a "game" perhaps could have taken many lives of their enemies if allowed to fight with their weapons (swords) the way intended instead of confining them to sure death along with their adversary as I see the "rules" of the game to lead them. Is this not a silly thing to do? Were these men volunteers or was there a reason for those particular 24 being there under those circumstances? What, I ask you is ENTERTAINING about watching 12 struggles of this nature in a cesspool of death anyway? No, what I would ask some of you historians is an explanation of this mayhem. The ONLY possible reason for this is because both sides wanted to be able to provide 12 men with enough courage to meet their death this way since the other side was able to provide 12 to do so. Can anyone help me?
