So what gives us that authority? It's because it is something that has already been established in heaven.
Thou shalt bind that which has been bound already in heaven. It is a condition. And thou shall loose on earth things that shall have been loosed in heaven already.
So the church is here to declare that which has already been determined in heaven. We are only proclaimers!
What right do we have to tell anybody that they need to receive Christ and His death for them on the cross to be saved?
We have the authority to tell people that we've got the key. We have got the key that unlocks the door. His name is Jesus!
If you receive Him, I have the authority to tell you that you have been loosed from your sins. If you refuse Him, I have the authority to tell you that if you continue to reject Him throughout your whole life, you'll be bound to your sins and you will die in your sins.
That is pretty authoritative! But I didn't make that up. That is the authority God has given to the church, you and I.
I hope what I along with T Levis has share helps you out in your study on binding and loosing.
Blessings in Christ Jesus!
If I might piggyback off what T Levis has shared, in Matthew Chapter 16 it says, "and I will give unto you the keys of the kingdom of heaven:" Here it is singular. But in Chapter 18 it is plural. So it is not just Peter, it is all of them!
Now, "keys" is a Hebrew symbol of authority. A person that had the keys was in charge.
You can go back to some of the earlier documents in the Old Testament and see that the person that had the keys was in charge.
And some of the kings would get a little frustrated because whoever had the keys was in charge, and if you can't find him, of course you make the king mad, and they would have a new key bearer pretty soon!
He says I'll give you the keys. I'll give you the authority. We know that keys unlock things for entrance.
It says, and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Let me share with you what it is literally saying from the Greek:
"Whatsoever thou shall bind on earth, shall have been bound in heaven."
Please know that this is very important to understand, and I'll give it to you again. It reads "And whatsoever thou shall bind on earth shall (have been) bound in heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, shall (have been) loosed in heaven."
Here's the importance of those Perfect Tense verbs in the Greek text:
Jesus is not giving them and the church the authority to go around binding and loosing. We see this in Chapter 18, and Matthew tells us that it has do with sin.
In 1 John 3:8, the word "loosed" is used for how Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. It is the word loosed.
When a person gets saved, they are loosed from Satan. So the church has authority to either bind someone to their sins or loose them from their sins.
I'm running out of space, so I will send a part 2
Great question and great responses!
So, when it is all summed up here is the difference between the two.
"As often said" Mercy is not getting what we deserve, and grace is freely receiving what we don't deserve.
Here is where I believe they come together.
As posted in others response mercy is flowing from the God by way of love.
This is Gods Holy spirit. God is Love! God is Just! God is merciful!
In the cross we have God displaying his very nature without compromising any of his attributes.
LOVE and Mercy.
He loved us so he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
JUDGE.
In Matthew 26:39-44 Jesus prayed three times "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." Those were our sins that nailed him to that cross and those prayers were answered by those sins being judged and paid for by the penalty of death.
GRACE.
Christ done what only he could have done as "God in the flesh" live the sinless life he did as the perfect lamb of God endure the cross and raise the 3rd day. And his righteousness is imputed to those who believe. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:8.
Also. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 1 Corinthians 1:30.
Sin has been judged.
Mercy has been given.
We have been graced with the Holy spirit.
We have been given Christ!
Now we look to display for this fruit to exist in our lives.
God bless.
Dear Lord Jesus, Ginny needs your salvation. Please bring this about in her soon. Be with her in this time of her end. Comfort her, bring her peace, and most of all, knowledge of salvation in Your Gospel. I pray that You will bless her with Your grace and mercy. Amen.
If an Evil parent can give good gifts to their children, what are gifts that come from The Father when ask ? and their magnitude thereof .
The translators who were commissioned to translate the manuscripts were not divinely inspired , nor were they modern English , they were of Old English , a different style , they did a great job .
note, Matthew 18:18-20,
the word bind & bound is- "deo" Greek, as per Strongs Exhaustive Concordance = to bind, be bound,
Loosed - "Luo" Greek, also in Strongs Exhaustive Concordance, = to loosen, break, destroy, dissolve,
Luke 13:16, this is a great example. It appears as believers, we have been given authority to make rulings, set free, etc. James 1:5, Mark 13:34, Matthew 28:18,19, John 16:23-28
Hopefully these are helpful
A splendid explanation. I appreciate your response.
I will pray for you tonight.
Dear Heavenly Father, we lift up Denise to You tonight in the name of Jesus and ask you to bring relief to her from the nerve pain and foot problems. We ask that You will cause these conditions to improve and help her find the right treatments for these ailments. We ask that You bring healing to Denise and help her to bear the pain as You bring relief to her. Amen.
Okay; well the conclusion of the matter. I wanted to say something here about the sources of information (or as some like to suggest false narrative in today's media). Have to avoid buzzwords here. ANY bias we have is going to determine what we believe; and as is pretty well known the algorithms and other control measures bring us those articles that we like to read based on use and frequency on certain sites; etc. We certainly can remember what Solomon said when in Ecclesiastes it was stated that there was "nothing new under the sun." The overriding principle there at the end of chapter 12 was to fear God and basically enjoy the blessings God has given us but realize that all things would eventually conclude with judgment after our brief earthly life.
There isn't a day that goes by when (at least in my experience) there aren't certain things that I ask God which I cannot understand about my life. It is often stated that during trials and difficult times ones faith is tested best; I tend to disagree with that; as you can really tell who is faithful during times of rest; prosperity and ease. Job is a good example of this as he had more riches than anyone alive at that time and yet he had the concerns of his family members sinning when he offered prayers to God and sacrifices for their behalf. We also have Abraham and Joseph as 2 others who later in life became exceedingly wealthy. This was truly a blessing from God and as far as I can see there is no evidence that they were ensnared by the allurement of riches as Solomon was in his later years. Growing up poor helps in that regard; although it is not a guarantee (as there are poor people who are caught up as well in money that often make unwise decisions gambling away their earnings or worse benefits on lottery tickets).
In conclusion; we all stand alone before the judgment seat of Christ. May we live accordingly.
How the family interacts also shows how those who value children as a heritage from the Lord are blessed by prosperity. There are many principles the Amish for instance demonstrate by providing food from their own crops; labor from their children and eliminating waste with those endless gadgets and luxuries the rest of America has felt entitled to. This has largely kept their children from the suicidal; ungodly society rife with all sorts of sins that are bringing this generation at an unprecidented rate to physical and spiritual destruction. This is not to say that there aren't things being put under the rug in those closed societies (I won't mention anything specific here but a little research will demonstrate one particular issue). Nonetheless we see a society which has maintained an amazing amount of stability compared to the rest of Americans largely obsessed with the cares of this life.
One of my favorite scriptures is Matthew 10:16. We are to be wise but maintain a clear conscience. One thing I may have brought up before is how many are attempting to insulate their children from the evils of this world; while all the time exposing them to graphic virtual reality in video games; and other forms of entertainment and whatever they are being indoctrinated into in their schools. We are obsessed with always saying things that are inoffensive; yet leave little room for any real discussion; debate or even confrontations. It used to be much better it seems to me when kids would have occasional fistfights; rather than going out the whole way with guns (like they see in the movies). The wise thing I would say is to teach ALL these kids self defense and how to properly use weapons once they are teenagers so than any nut jub would know there would be say 20 or 30 others attacking them if they decided to go rogue (as well as having the teachers and other sources of protection actually doing their job along with enforcing penalties for crime.
I will pray for Angela tonight.
Dear Heavenly Father, we lift up Angela to You tonight. In the name of Jesus, we ask that You will come to Angela's aid tonight as she is being cared for in the hospital. Help her now! Bring her to health quickly. Father, we know that You can do this, so we are trusting You to, indeed, bring the best answer to her. Amen.
We see; as in my study in Psalms that David realized that there needed to be a continuing relationship with the Lord. We must understand as Peter learned the hard way that our own fortitude is not to be trusted. He somehow; along with the other disciples put Christ's frequent warnings about the upcoming crucifixion; as well as the prophecy about his own denial of Christ which was to occur the night of the trial before Pilate 3 times in the back of his mind. He knew better; or so he thought as he was always backed up (such as when he began to sink walking on the water). Christ had avoided assassination attempts 9 or 10 times already for the 3 1/2 years he had been with him along with the others. Things were to change real quick. The hour of darkness had come; and Peter had to be broken to later be restored (2nd part of the prophecy). Once the Resurrection occurred; then Christ could hallenge Peter 3 times if he truly loved Him; as he was to be taken where he didn't want to go (in other words a Word about his death). Paul also had a word of knowledge about his trip to Jerusalem where he eventually; perhaps much later than he first thought was led to his own martyrdom. He took it with faith knowing heaven was a much better place (Phillipians 1:21).
Wisdom also can be seen in something like finances. ( Luke 16:10). The trust of God in us relates to where our heart is now.
Money itself is neither good or bad (and today truly is worthless; just waiting for the official statement there if you get my drift).
Truly we must as the coin says trust God as He has allowed us to still prosper somewhat as compared to much of the world. As long as there is some financial system or commodity of value; a long term gain is always best in low risk and slow accumulation of resources rather than high risk deals. Of course we need to have enough wisdom to keep a work ethic to provide for ourselves ( 2 THESSALONIANS 3:10).
There is certainly a need these days for grandparents to impart some wise counsel by skipping a generation to their grandchildren.
Again; our society being so obsessed on a nuclear family and especially the results of a post COVID society we have isolated ourselves even from worldly counsel that could be helpful to our largely lost youth today. I sincerely believe that those who can find; for instance an arranged Christian marriage today (yes such sites exist) have a better chance of success than today's dating sites. It seems that those who meet in bars have much better chances even among those in the world than many people who try going through all sorts of hoops to find the right person; although it can happen as it did with a friend of mine who is now engaged. Simply put; our parents (unless they are truly sadistic individuals) know what is best for us in many cases; as well as being more than willing to point out faults. It is certainly helpful to see those who they can honestly say is a good match for their children (if there isn't some sort of financial gain or status gain that is the true motivation for their opinions). Human wisdom tends to become skewed by our emotions and physical desires along with idealistic infatuations and fantasies. Again; it is not foolproof as my own marriage failed even with the approval of my father in law and the fact that my ex wife and I were good friends throughout much of our college experience for years before more interest on my part occurred. I will just say this from my experience; it is important to trust God when He warns us of temptations and other relationships that can destroy a covenant marriage. If I told my ex 20 years before it happened that she would cheat with her friend at work and eventually marry him when she was emotionally utterly committed to me she may not have believed it. My point on bringing this up is that none of us can outsmart the Devil in our own understanding.
We see a lack of wisdom of any ssort these days as we continue to increase in knowledge exponentially (shades of Daniel 12:4). In one sense; we cannot rely on our own understanding ( Proverbs 3:5-6) but on God alone. There are certain principles whether of law; crops; finances or other things which all those under the sun are embarked in to one degree or another with whatever freedoms God allows. We certainly cannot operate against human wisdom or our conscience when we don't do something we know we are supposed to do ( James 4:17). As with anything else there are extremes we should try to avoid. Christ; for instance when He was on earth told those He sent forth two by two not to bring much along with them ( Mark 6:8); but later once He was preparing for His departure the instruction changed ( Luke 22:36). This included money; clothes and a weapon for protection from thieves. We have two major things that we need to avoid; the first being seeking things for ourselves outside the will of God or trying to "help God" by speeding up the process. Having the understanding that everything belongs to God and that we take nothing into this world and cannot take anything out helps a great deal ( 1 Timothy 6:7). The second thing is not laying down our life for the Lord. At the extreme this would be martyrdom; but everyday tests where we choose to serve others above our own desires we "die a little" bit at a time as we carry our cross daily. Things like marriages of course can be a major factor and in some cases individuals who can remain chaste can be in unique advantages for unfettered service toward the Lord. Again; as with anything else I have seen more than enough Godly Christian marriages where more than sufficient attention is paid to the wife and children along with a generous amount of time dedicated to corporate worship; prayer; evangelism and small group studies. Being equally yoked of course works this out best.
As to the translators themselves, from 'kingjamesbibletranslators dot org', I learn that they were all from England, university educated (Oxford & Cambridge), members/ordained priests of the C of E, & familiar with the ancient languages. Nine of the translators passed away even before the 1611 KJV was published.
So, it seems that maybe the different expressions of the Spirit of God were based on personal preference or specific application which clearly doesn't affect its meaning as the one & same Spirit. Unfortunately, these different expressions of God's Spirit have led to confusion among some readers, particularly those who attribute the word 'ghost' to something more sinister.
Welcome to the community. I am praying for you at this moment. I'd like to ask why your request is so urgent? Isn't it fair to give yourself a bit more time, because often emotions change.
I considered doing something dramatic when I was down some years ago and now that time has passed I'm so glad I didn't take action on those feelings, because my feelings changed, and my situation changed. Would you like to give yourself more time to talk things through with someone and to be prayed for? At bare minimum can you do yourself a favor and call a hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and speak to someone now? I'll also check back on this thread as I and I'm sure others are happy to communicate with you.
About your question- our bodies are not even ours, but God's temple and its of course a sin to harm the things He creates and loves. Knowing what I know now, I'd never risk such a thing. God will provide your needs if you have a little more patience. I believe you will get through what you are dealing with and when this happens it results in a refreshing change of perspective.
For immediate relief from whatever may be bothering you, you can interrupt the thoughts if you do something kind for someone else tonight, offering support to someone homeless, calling someone you haven't spoken to in a long time, giving someone a gift card unexpectedly, just showing someone else that you care. Everyone is valuable and important when you help lift up someone else. What if one of your friends or acquaintances is going through something similar and hasn't told you or anyone else, would you prefer them to tell you? Maybe that's how others feel about you? Prayer. Also, make sure your physical needs are attended to, like sleep, take a long bath, get a nice workout in, watch a funny movie. These are ideas to calm down temporary emotions. God bless you.
Though to answer your questions, if either of these women only are being referred to, then neither were stoned or impregnated by Solomon, according to the Bible. As well, the Queen of Sheba returned to her country after her meeting with King Solomon ( 1 Kings 10:13). We're not told where the realm of Sheba is/was located, but the main choices are in modern Yemen and in Ethiopia.
One can see God's mercy as one of the smaller rivers that come out of the main river which is called "God's Love". Everything that comes from God originates from His Love. If one tries to summarize God's character in few words, then a good approximation is 3 things. 1. Love, 2. Justice, 3. Truth. Mercy originates from Love, it is a result of love. If there was no mercy from God then that would mean that God has no love. But love in God can not exist without justice and truth, that means that nomatter how much God loves people, He will judge them and imprison them eternally if they do not accept His Son's sacrifice. People's love can go together with unjustice, e.g. we may be unfair to others in favor of our children due to our love for them. God will never do that. Because that kind of love doesn't go together with justice. The same happens with truth and love.
Grace. As Chris said in greek "grace" is "charis" (pronounced in grk. as "khah-rees"). It's original meaning is gift/gifting. "Charisma" also means a gift (a talent given/gifted to a person by God/nature). Everything in the world is a gift from God, it is a result of His Love/Mercy. Life itself, the earth, the skies, the nature, the sun,..., virtually everything is a gift from God to all people, nomatter sinners or saints, But when it comes to salvation, when we say that we are saved by God's Grace that means that we are gifted salvation, it is a gift from God, not a wage for our good behaviour/works. And that gift is through Jesus Christ's sacrifice. Also the strength to withstand numerous events, trials, temptetions in our lives is also due to God's Grace, we are gifted that strength. The Holly Spirit as a helper to us to aquire sanctification is also a gift, we don't do anything to deserve Him.
So mercy is a result of God's Love. Like faith which is something internal which is shown externally by works, God's love/mercy is shown externally by His gifts/grace to people.
