Looks like some thoughtful answers were shared.

I have noticed that "tithing" has been disproportionately applied under the direction of church pastors who are looking to grow their income. In some cases I see it crossing into manipulation, coercion, and even deceit. I've seen evidence of some pastors who acted justified that they were entitled to a larger salary, a larger building, a private airplane, more materialism to "further the kingdom." The same church might dismiss other old testament laws, but when it comes to this topic they have no problem quoting the old testament. Of course not everyone has abused this and most start off with honorable intentions, but it sure is a dangerous path for some to be on.

If giving is truly about the heart and not fulfilling a perceived obligation to an old law, then assigning a percentage to it seems to defeat the purpose. I also believe that someone's time, labor, and objects have value, not just cash.

    Dear Larry

Addictions to sinful things are bad. Now for medicine I don't think there is anything to worry about as far as your spiritual life is concerned but medically you should be very careful not to get addicted . Now again if you can not withstand the pain and have to take medicine, then this is a something you should talk about with your doctor, it's not a matter of faith. But you can pray to God and ask him either to take the pain away or to help you not getting addicted to that medicine.

I would like others to comment on that as well.

    Hi Alex,

From my reading, "Saul" was his given Jewish name; and "Paul" was his Roman name. It was common in those times for people to go by two names. Since He was an apostle to the Gentiles, he chose to go by Paul.

On the Road to Damascus, Jesus addressed him as 'Saul' every time. Ananias was told to welcome 'Saul'. So, Jesus did not change his name, but Paul chose his Roman name as he went on to evangelize the Gentile world.

    Hi Jerry.

Take a look here at Obadiah 13-9.

The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.

Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

I believe they have mixed in with other tribes. They're no longer a people.

Read all of Obadiah, only one chapter.

    I hope this helps.

    God bless.

    God bless.

    Larry,

I'm not sure if you follow manuscripts or not, but Matthew 17:21 is actually an addition. It is not in some manuscripts, but it actually describes what Jesus said about praying. Howbeit this kind goes not out except by prayer and fasting.

What He means by that is bring him to me. He is not saying that prayer has some magical work to it, like pray over them and the demon will come out. He's saying it's through prayer, give him to me.

I understand that fasting serves two purposes. Number one: To become physically weak in order to be spiritually sensitive. That's the religious meaning for fasting. You go without food and your body becomes weak in order to become spiritually sensitive.

But also, you fast in order to lose your physical strength so that God's Spirit can use you. And that's Jesus' emphasis here, bring him to me. Make sure that you're not involved, that your flesh is not at all involved, and bring him to me.

And again in Mark 9:29, just like the Matthew text, that little phrase "and fasting" was added to many manuscripts. Originally, it was just prayer, but if we keep the fasting in there that's not a problem.

The important thing we need to know is that it is not part of a formula. What is the first thing Jesus said? He said the answer is, bring him to me, and if I am not here, pray! Bring him to me!

Are you still saved if you have to take pain medication for pain every day ?? And you're addicted to it .
  • Erich on Romans 8 - 3 years ago
Love the Book of Romans. Here in ch. 8 we see a very clear explanation on how the Spirit filled Christian is to live. We stand by faith, and our faith in Christ is the means of our salvation. 1 Pt. 1:5 tells us we are kept by the power of God through faith, which is a living continual faith that is rooted in love and obedience to Christ. Now, some may say "What does it mean to be obedient to Christ?". It not only means to believe on Him, but, to express it in love ( John 13:34; 1 John ch. 1-2). How can we, as followers of Christ, say he is our Savior from sin and the penalty of sin, but, continue living in willful sin? We can't. Some will say that I am preaching a "work-based salvation", but, I am preaching a Biblical based salvation. One that is centered on the committing and dedicating our lives to the one, and only one, who gave His life for forgiveness of our sins! Only those who truly commit their lives to Christ will be saved. Anyone who claims Christ, but, lives in the flesh is not fit for the Kingdom of Heaven.

We, as followers of Christ, need to follow the Holy Spirit and set our minds on the things above. We were once alienated from Christ based on our wicked works ( Eph. 2: 2-3). We were once children of darkness, but, now are saved by the blood of Christ. He is the one who presents us holy and un-blamable in the sight of God IF we continue in the faith ( Col. 1: 21-23; Gal. 5: 1-5). We also see that Biblical faith is one that expresses itself in love ( gal. 5: 6). We need to remember that only those who endure to the end in faith will reap eternal life ( Romans 2: 6-11; Gal. 6: 7-9; Mt. 10: 22; 1 Jn. 2: 24-25; 1 Cor. 15; 1-2).

There is no command to tithe today. Offerings are given out of good will and tithes are now used to supposedly "fund" ministries. I've met some great pastors who knew better than to teach modern tithing and worked honest jobs to keep the electricity on in their churches.

    Believers are no longer under the Abrahamic/Mosaic covenant ( Rom. 6:14-15; 7:5-6; Gal. 3:15-4:7; 2 Cor. 3:4-18).

Tithes were given to the Levites and priests, but there are no Levites and priests in the new covenant.

Levites and priests were tied to the sacrificial system of the old covenant. Now all believers are priests ( 1 Pet. 2:9; Rev. 1:6; 5:10; 20:6), with Jesus as our Melchizedekian high priest ( Heb. 7).

When Jesus affirmed the tithe, it was before the dawn of the new covenant

Some defend tithing by saying Jesus praised tithing, even if he said it was less important than other things ( Matt. 23:23; Luke 11:42). This argument appears strong, but it's not persuasive. Jesus also mentioned offering sacrifices in the temple ( Matt. 5:23-24), but Christians don't think-even if the temple were rebuilt-that we should do that. Our Lord's words are understandable when we think about his location in redemptive history.

Careful, if any man asks for tithe now -- I'd ask them "what covenant are we under and could I have a receipt showing that tithe went to 'help the church' and not to make a down payment on your new car?"

I believe there's nothing wrong with giving offering to a ministry. Missionaries give offerings to help build churches in third-world countries, provide food or clothing and do this without mandate. If you're giving an offering out of fellowship; there's nothing wrong with that. But let no man tell you tithes are mandatory...unless we're back under the Law and all belief is in vain.
  • Jesse - In Reply - 3 years ago
    Torrie,

There is no place in the NT that commands a believer to tithe. The OT tithe requirement meant that you were to give 10 percent of everything you owned, not just money. How many do that today? Now, if a believer chooses to give 10 percent of their income to the church, that's okay, but it's not required.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 gives us the principles of giving. "But this I say, He which sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which sows bountifully, (and that's the word blessing). He who sows a blessing shall also reap a blessing. Every man according as he purposes in his own heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, (that's the word grief), or of necessity: (and that's the word pressure), for God loves a cheerful giver.

The term cheerful giver in the Greek is the word hilarious. God loves a hilarious giver. And no, I've never seen one!

This is also covered in Proverbs. Basically, God's principle is this: He blesses us with more than our necessity, because we are a steward of our possessions that belong to Christ. There are needs in the body of Christ and a lot of them God creates on purpose just so we participate in helping those in need.

There's a principle in the OT that's carried over that if God blesses us with an abundance of more than what we need, and we decide to spend it on ourselves, He has a way of making that money go to waste if we're not going to use it under His direction.

I'm not saying that everything we spend on ourselves is selfish. I'm just stating principle. We are dictating to God what He gives to us. If I'm going to sow sparingly, I'm going to reap sparingly. But if we sow a blessing, we reap a blessing!

It's a heart condition, not an amount. It's the attitude of what we do with what God gives us. It's up to each individual to purpose in their own heart whether they want to be the steward of their possessions in service to Christ. We're not to give out of grief, nor out of stress, for God loves a cheerful giver!

    1 Corinthians 1:12-13

"Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?"

The Apostle Paul encountered so much divisions in Corinth: division amongst the preachers, divisions in the congregation and division upon whom each should follow based on their Faith in Christ Jesus? No! Their final division was on who physically baptized them in water.

    What's the point?

Paul ends with "I of Christ (as we should ALL be ONLY)" and "Is Christ divided?" Every denomination is a division. Every denomination is religion. They set their doctrines, their conditions for Salvation or additions to scripture and the body (the church) becomes divided. If you attend a church -- make sure that a movement, name, denominational religious regime or even these YouTube "preachers/conspiracy ministers," doesn't remove you from the doctrines which Christ Jesus established in His Word.

Let it be known, I trust no one (aside from my wife & Christ Jesus). I remove all other distractions and religion to focus solely on the Holy Bible for what I should know. I was raised in the false catholic religion for 19-years, agnostic for 5-years, evangelical non-denomination for 6-years, charismatic for 3-years and in the Baptist church for 5-years. I found no wisdom, no sound doctrine and no agreement with those of organized religion. Christianity isn't a religion and don't let religion guide how you serve God. Let the Holy Bible be the first and final Word on EVERYTHING.

Rsv bible mark 9:29 & matthew 17:21 have lost "fasting and prayer" that jesus said in kjv are both necessary to cast out evil/ demons.

two satanic worshippers prevailed in 1963 process to leave out "fasting" in rsv.

(note: " *saint joseph's partners" article "the power of fasting".)

john wesley would not ordain a minister into colonial georgia methodist church who was not fasting.

president abe lincoln declared 30 april as usa national day of fasting and prayer.

a few days later a stray confederate bullet hit their commanding general.

in his absence gettysburg was a turn of the civil war in favor of the union of usa.

why are we today not fasting on bread and water on wednesdays ( day of judas' betrayal) & fridays ( the crucifiction), like early christians practiced?*)

fasting is to humble ourselves, like wicked ahab did when elija told him god's judgement on him was all men and women in his kingdom would die. ahab fasted for a week..god spared ahab's people during his rule.

esther 4:16 she and all jews fasted 3 days. god acted.

the king canceled his command that they all jews be killed.

why struggle under evil, pandemic, closed churches, war time attacks?fasting can be developed step by step.

cardiologist, dr. p. jamnadas lectures:"the amazing benefits of "fasting for survival" as he lecture med students at fla. state univ. med school.

(( why not reverse and cure diabetes? 80%of usa is prediabetic.

clear brain fog? reverse cardio vascular disease? reduce waist lines to less than 40 inches?)

this assistant med school professor describes how to, step by step, develop ability to fast.

how about reduce risk of cancer by 70%for life time?

    help!!!

lead us in developing ability to fast and pray..., as jesus expects us to do.

    lets cast out evil.

    why not?

    Hi Giannis.

    Again thanks for your reply.

We're in agreement with the blessings of Abraham to all people by faith.

But we are in disagreement that the keeping of the law binds those promises. Galatians 3:17 says otherwise.

    You mentioned Matthew 19:28.

    Now quoting you concerning judas.

    Your quote:

"Remember that Jesus said to all 12 apostoles, including Judas, that they will sit on thrones to judge the 12 tribes of Israel. Did that come true for Judas? No, because Judas at the end walked another way. What is then happened to that promise given to Israel? It was gone as soon as they crucified Jesus and took some other way. God's promises are never unconditional,"

    End quote.

Judas didn't catch Jesus by surprise and he was prophesied to betray Jesus in the old testament. And early on in John 6:70.

Take a look at the verse you referred to.

"And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have FOLLOWED ME, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

    Several things here.

Jesus sitting on his throne doesn't depend on his disciples following him. If so it wouldn't be still expected after Christ was crucified, as seen here in Acts 15:14-17. and elsewhere in scripture after the crucifixion.

Jesus says That ye which have FOLLOWED ME. A desciple is one that follows one's teachings . Does that sound like Jesus?

When were they sent out with the power and influence of the Holyspirit? After Jesus resurrection and after the death of Judas. Paul was born out of due season. There's your twelve.

Concerning 1949. yes they're in the land but is Christ sitting on David's throne?

They won't behold him as a nation until they say blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord. And is the lion laying down with the Lamb? Is the devil chained a thousand years? None of the Millennium prophecies have been fulfilled. See Isaiah 65:19.

    God bless.

When you come into this website you're on the RED LINK PAGE.

Up at the top is the SEARCH BOX. Links for all books of the Bible is below that. for Bible subject only

    Example:

You can put the word 'Atonement' in the Search box and hit the arrow >

The engine will fetch every scripture that contains that word. You can sort the list; choose OT or NT only; and the engine places the list in book order.

With DATES OR HISTORY, you'll have to go on GOOGLE. Type it in like this:

    "Atonement, history".

You have to use ancient names from ancient maps.

By using all the search options, you'll learn some really awesome information. If search doesn't fetch anything try wording it differently.

If it fetches 5,000 verses; try wording it another way or just look at only OT or NT verses.

Look around on this whole website to see what's in it. If you get lost, just back out and come back in. Curious is good.

The location of the COMMENTARY BOX is below the search box. Touch a scripture and it will highlight Yellow. Scroll down slowly.

I like: BIBLEHUB on Google. It has many commentaries, to compare with.
