It's saying the name of God in a disrespectul manner. I like watching Ray Comfort videos of his street evangelism and he always asks, would you use your parents' name as a cuss word? Most everyone says no, yet admits to using God's name in vain which is insulting to God and a violation of the 3rd of the 10 commandments. It's sad that in this society its difficult to escape hearing it everywhere and when your brain hears something tens of thousands of times it has an effect. God bless.

This verse about itching ears comes to mind: 2 Timothy 4:3-4

To me that means some people stray from the truth and only want to hear what they want to believe.

Hi Nelcene. Media is the old name of the Median Empire that ruled between 625-550 BC, of which Persia lay to the East of the Empire & Media to the West. The whole empire stretched from present day Eastern Turkey to the Indus River (from which India gets its name), so it was a very large Empire. Nowadays, as you wrote, most of that area is occupied by Iran (& Afghanistan & Pakistan); with Iraq, Armenia, Syria & Lebanon occupying the Western part. Cyrus the Great of Persia later conquered the Medes & all the land became part of the Persian Empire. Of note, Media was a son of Japheth, Noah's son (spelled Madai in Genesis 10:2).

Grecia is present day Greece but in those early days, its territorial boundaries are dissimilar to today's Greece. Notably, another son of Japheth, Javan, (Hebrew word for Greece is, Yavan) & Javan is generally understood as being the father of the Grecians.

If you don't mind me asking....what do those verses guide or form your take of what the Bible says about liars?
  • Adam - In Reply - 3 years ago
My opinion is there's nothing wrong with that phrase and think it shows humility and sensitivity to the will of God. It's similar to what Jesus said in Luke 22:42.

One could ask: isn't everything God's will anyway since He's always in control isn't praying for God's will redundant?

I believe God is powerful enough to intervene and powerful enough to change His mind based on our interactions with Him, and believe He fully gave us freewill and that we're not mere robots following a script. With that being said, I think living a prayerful life in humility as a servant trying our best to follow Jesus through obedience and asking for God's will to be done seems like a sign of a healthy Christ-follower to me. God bless you.

Hello Jarome. I'm sure that you'll be greatly blessed in your meticulous study of the Gospel of John & for the many Truths that reveal more of Christ contained therein.

As you have read from the first verse in the Gospel, the subject is Jesus. And John develops on this: that from the very beginning (from eternity), God's Word was intrinsically a part of the Godhead. All things were made by Him (i.e. from the Word proceeding from the Mouth of God). And in this Word there was life: not only giving out those words that gave life, but the Word to be made flesh would be the giving of life itself. And this Life would shine to all men (especially those in that day), but they never saw that Light - they saw the Man Jesus but they continued to live in the absence of His Light - in darkness, shutting their eyes & mind to the Light from God.

Even now, we can see how people without the Light of Christ, live in spiritual darkness - most even believing that their darkness is actually light. Jesus spoke of this in Matthew 6:23 b: "...If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!". What men see as light (their knowledge & mental prowess, creative abilities, power over others, etc.), Jesus says that without Him, they are still living in darkness. They might do well on Earth (in their lifetimes), but what will all that matter when eternity calls upon them? But when those abilities are coupled with spiritual light, love for God & for His Son, & a submission to Him only, then they can truly experience "the light of life" ( John 8:12). And so John the Baptist came bearing witness of that Light (one could say, he came shining the flashlight of God's great Plan - until the radiant Light of His Son would appear to all). Unfortunately, as you know, most having seen that Light, still preferred to live in darkness (in sin, following traditions, even trusting the Law & their heritage to save them). But some came to the Light, basked in it & found freedom.

Study the entire Book of James for what faith put into practice looks like. James also shows and rebukes numerous forms of what presumption looks like.

    To Sandy measurements in Bible.

Use Body Parts for Biblical Measurements

As ancient civilizations progressed to the need for keeping account of things, people used parts of the body as the quickest and easiest way to measure something. After sizing up artifacts according to both ancient and contemporary measurements, they've discovered that:

A "finger" equals about three-quarters of an inch (roughly the width of an adult human finger)

A "palm" equals about 3 inches or the size across a human hand

A "span" equals about 9 inches, or the width of an extended thumb and four fingers

    James 4:13-16

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

Faith is not presumption that your will and God's will are the same. Jesus taught us to pray:

    Matthew 6:10

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Faith is submission to God's will as Christ submitted His will to the Father's will ( Matthew 26:36-46)

39 And he (Jesus) went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

True faith looks beyond ourselves. Philippians 4:4-11

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11

And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Why do some Christians say, "if God be willing", or "if it be God's will"? Isn't that unbelief or even doubt, and does not the Word of God say that my people perish for lack of not knowing the truth, or having knownlege of the truth.

What does God say about someone that continually lies about everything they talk about?
  • Chris - In Reply on Genesis 3 - 3 years ago
Hi Pam. We see this pronoun ('us') used also in Genesis 1:26 & Genesis 11:7, but we should not understand that God, in these instances, is speaking of Himself & the other beings in Heaven. Rather, we learn that all of the Godhead (i.e. the Divine Beings within the Person of God) were active in these instances where they interacted with mankind.

1 John 5:7 reads, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one", reminds us that for God to be Who He is, His Word (now Jesus as man & in Heaven), & His Spirit, are all one in the Godhead & yet separated (or, sent out) for the performance of God's Will. So when God uses 'Us', we can understand that the all-inclusive God is declaring His Deity (His Unity in Triunity) & this fact should be seen in those instances where they are revealed to us (in His creation of man & His dealings with man).

That is an impossible question. :) You hit it on the head - EVERY Word that proceeds from the mouth of Christ is precious, valuable, Spirit and life!

As I considered your request, I couldn't help but to sadly consider that I, for one, far to often, speak lots of things that are unimportant or unwise. Thanks be to God, I sometimes speak some good things as well. From us weak humans, there is always a mixture of good speech and not-so-good speech.

But our Jesus constantly speaks rich words, true words, right words, wise words; His words were and are sincere milk for babes and meat for the strong! His words instruct, correct, encourage, admonish, exhort; His Word are spoken to a purpose and are always pertinent and to the point. His words set the captives free! His words invite the penitent and strike terror in the proud! Christ's words are tender enough to support a broken reed, and strong enough to pierce stubborn, rocky hearts! Books can be written on the glories of the words of Christ. They are all wonderful, just as He Who speaks them is Wonderful!

Let us love, cherish, and study and obey each and every one that The Lord has graciously given us. They are His love letter to us.

I want to acknowledge the incorrect and unbiblical way I summarized scripture when I quickly wrote:

"At the same time, not only did the wicked line of Cain perish in the flood, all descendants in Seth's family tree outside of Noah's household were deemed wicked and died in the flood as well."

As written this not true. The named individuals in the direct line from Seth to Noah were godly, even though only Noah did not die or get translated prior to the flood. I am also aware that the judgement of the flood was not pronounced on mankind until 120 years before the flood. Prior to that moment any number of unnamed individuals in the line of Seth may have died as godly individuals. However, once that judgement was pronounced, only Noah and those that believed his preaching and the animals God brought to him by the time the flood came would be saved. Tradition holds that Noah was widely mocked. Noah likely had brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws among the mockers. In any case, by the time the flood actually came only Noah and his immediate household believed. Whether or not any unnamed individuals that died between the time judgement was pronounced and before the flood came ever actually believed Noah's preaching is not known, but it is reasonable to say there were very few if any.

I should not have attempted to summarize all of that into a single sentence, and the summary I gave fails to account for most of what scripture says and is therefore unbiblical. So I accept that criticism from those who wrote it.

There are other critiques I could add about this post, but I hope this suffices to acknowledge I did a poor job in what I originally posted and had I taken the time to reread my posts more carefully when I was challenged I should have withdrawn them based on how I had failed to apply care in handling these passages.

    Free,

You are in N. Europe, right? The day Russia destroys America and its allies roundabout, you'll be in a panic. Then thoughts will come to mind about who Babylon was, and how you could be so well read, yet miss the warnings provided.

The day of the Lord attack is against God's people and those people are US/Israel, both houses of Israel. God's people changed from righteous, to treacherous, so they need to be destroyed. America to desolation Joel 2, Israel to captivity Luke 21:20-24

Ezekiel 21:12 Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people (US/Israel), it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh.

Jeremiah 50, like 50 stars on the flag. 43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them (missiles), and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.

I read that James 4 14 means that our relationships with parents ,children, siblings etc is only temporary. Is this true because I thought our relationships carried over into heaven with our loved ones who are believers. I don't see anywhere in that verse where it says our relationships are only temporary.. can you explain...

(Not duplicate-other post deleted for edits)

The Apostle Paul ( Romans 1:1), who was originally named Saul ( Acts 7:58) of Tarsus ( Acts 22:3), but eventually became known as Paul ( Acts 13:9), dictated the letter to Tertius ( Romans 16:22). The account of most of what is known about his life story was written about by Luke in the Book of Acts. Acts 7:58-60, Acts 8:1-4, Acts 9:1-31, Acts 11:25-30, Acts 12:24-25, Acts 13 to Acts 28.

The Apostle Paul is recognized as the author of most of the Epistles (Apostolic letters) in the New Testament, which include Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians. Ephesians. Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon. Some also consider him the author of Hebrews, but the authorship of that book is not known for sure.

Peter also speaks about Paul in 2 Peter 3:15-16.
