What this means, is that it wouldn't be wrong to believe that the wives of these three brothers & also the other sons of Adam & Eve, came from within their own family (i.e. the men would have married their sisters, cousins, or nieces), which would be abominable to us today, though normal in those days to warrant generational continuance and survival. Even today, amongst Muslims & Parsis for example, first cousin marriages are acceptable, especially those living in secluded small communities, away from their larger populations. But evidences of cleft lip & palate & other physical problems exist among them.
It was not until much later ( Leviticus 18:6-17), that God forbad such close familial unions, which no doubt was partly due to preventing genetic aberrations and deformities, because of the human body becoming increasingly affected by sin's effects and the closely connected genes that exist between family members. What was once a needed union by close family members for the survival of the human race, was now prohibited because of resulting severe problems appearing both in mind & body.
As I mentioned, all this is not in the Bible, so we can't be absolutely certain, but I share this purely from a biological perspective which seems to make some sense of how the children of Adam & Eve found their wives & began to populate the Earth; but it was only through Seth, Enos and ultimately to Noah that God chose to preserve humanity from His destroying flood upon wicked humanity.
Hello Texsis - nice to hear from you again. Hope you are doing well. Your question is a good one, though the Bible doesn't explicitly give us the answer. From what we do know (as stated in the Bible), Adam and Eve were without sin at their creation. And that implies not only were they completely innocent of anything that went against the Will of God, but their bodies were free of any defects, which would enable them to live forever. But they disobeyed God in rebellion to His Word & sin entered in and the effects of that sin & sin nature then passed onto Cain, Abel & Seth. And of course Adam & Eve had many other children, sons & daughters ( Genesis 5:4), who also would have inherited that sin nature.
Most folk generally accept that Adam & Eve & their descendants were the first and only humans created by God. Others who believe that God created other humans as well (before or after Adam) to show that the Adamic race mixed with these others also, don't base their belief on biblical revelation, but in fact go against it. Therefore, believing that Adam & Eve were the first & only in creation and that after they sinned, their years on Earth were numbered, it also meant that their bodies & internal organs began to show the signs of wear & limitations. But this deterioration would take place slowly over time (their lowering lifespans indicating this). Therefore, it may be valid to assume that their children (i.e. the many others during the lifetimes of Cain, Abel & Seth) would also have shortened lives and their genetic purity too would have altered marginally. Onto Page 2.
Thanks again, nice to talk with you
Welcome to the site!
I suppose 2 Peter 3:8 is where most draw that conclusion.
"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord "AS A THOUSAND YEARS", and a thousand years as one day.
If we take a closer look at that verse it doesn't say "one day with the Lord "IS" a thousand years.
It says "AS" a thousand years.
But that's only half of what the verse says!
It also says AND A THOUSAND YEARS "AS" ONE DAY.
This is like saying two steps forward and two steps backwards.
The distance of time has no factor with the Lord.
A thousand years is neither long nor short and a day is neither long nor short!
So if we take a look at the previous verses and the following we se that it's talking about God's longsuffering.
Peter is rebuking the scoffers in verses 3and 4 "Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2 Peter 3:3-9.
God bless.
Have a great weekend.
God bless,
RLW
Thanks for your reply today. Have a busy weekend ahead, so I will be thinking on what we have discussed here. God's blessing be upon you now and always.
"And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice."
Obeying the voice is gospel, the compound number Twelve is made up of blessings in heaven andon earth as stipulated inthe Covenant which is by the Law of the Spirit is ratified. Faith of Abraham was tested and he proved in his obedience that it worked. So the Angel of the Lord blessed,"And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed".
The Spirit in vv.20-24 presents Nahor's posterity. "Nahor has twelve sons, eight by his lawful wife, and four by his concubine. So Jacob has twelve sons, eight by two lawful wives, and four by two concubines. Lastly, Ishmael has twelve sons. These coincidences are curious". Jacob similarly has Twelve in number. The number Twelve indicates the Covenant is applied to the seed of Abraham. Before God judged the old world as the spirit tells us the generation of man set in context of multiples of 12. " My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years."(Gen.6.3)
The Law of the Spirit ratifies the Covenant and set the two worlds of the Spirit and of the body on the basis of the gospel. Obedience is the key to explain faith with works. Either you abide in Christ and produce fruits or you scatter the. Either Or.
Part 1
Thank you for your reply, I certainly do not mind. I understand that this subject is delicate, and I am blessed to have brothers and sisters on this site willing to discuss it. Revelation is a challenging book, and I am looking forward to Jesse getting through it.
You have listed some exciting verses, and I hope to share my thoughts on them and your post, not to determine who may be right, but rather to view the discussion as a nudge to pray and study. On the verses you listed, John 12:49-50, Jesus is saying the Father gave Him a commandment and what the Father told Him to say, Jesus was obedient.
John 8:28-29, the Pharisees were debating with Jesus who He was, and He said that in verse 28-29 when He is lifted up/crucified, they will know who He is. We see in Matthew 28:54 when Jesus died and those things that happened, the centurion and those who were there greatly feared and said, "Truly this was the Son of God.
John 7:16-19, the gospels, reveal the glory of the Father who sent Jesus; all that Jesus did was accomplished by the Father through the Holy Spirit, with which Jesus was anointed without measure.
In John 4:34, John 5:19, John 5:30, and John 8:26 all say that it is the Father, not Him, on in John 14:10 Jesus was in the Father and the Father was in Him this was from the time Jesus was anointed without measure the Holy Spirit when He was baptized and made the Messiah.
Jesus was and is the Word of God; John 1:14. God was in the flesh in Jesus through the Holy Spirit, just like these verses say. The beginning in John, many understand it as the beginning of creation, my understanding is the beginning of Jesus' ministry, as we see in Mark 1:1, Luke 1:2, and 1 John 1:1.
To me, Jesus was the first in the plan of God, Revelation 3:14, and everything was created in Jesus, not by Him, and all was created for Jesus and the purpose of the Father. Revelation 13:8 and 1 Peter 1:18-21.
See part 2
John 10:30 I and my Father are one. Should we not consider other verses, John 17:11, John 17:20-23, John 14:28. These verses, Numbers 23:19, John 20:17, 2 Corinthians 11:31, Ephesians 1:3, Ephesians 4:4-6, and 1 Peter 1:3. Then, in Revelation 21:22-23 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. 23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
God wanted to be with His people, He first instructed Moses to build a tabernacle, which was symbolic of Jesus. Jesus was born without sin, not by man but of the seed of a woman whose Father was God. God could dwell in Him. Like the tabernacle, Jesus was holy, not defiled. Jesus became the light of the world, the Shekinah Glory manifested in Him and God again dwelt with man in the flesh of Jesus, to me that is John 1:14.
I do thank you for your reply, and I hope and pray I do not offend anyone who reads what I post; our discussions should only inspire us to study, not to win or demean, if so, we all lose.
I will stop here; I do not want to get ahead of Jesse's work in Revelation. You are always welcome to reply to me GiGi.
God bless,
RLW
The substitutional symbolism of 'a ram caught in the thicket by his horns' has a bearing on the covenant mentioned in the previous chapter where king of Geraar represents the nation of Gentiles and Abraham. He would not receive even a shoe latchet from king of Sodom who represented a nation under judgment but in the case of Abimelech, he makes an exception."Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba"looks forward to the fulfilment of Isaiah's prophesy mentioned in ch.2. (21.32)
"And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time",
The angel of the Lord calls Abraham and says," And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son/ That in blessing I will bless thee" (vv.16-17) He represent God, the Word was God' so the emphasis is the Law of the Spirit is ratifying the everlasting Covenant as though Abraham as the father of many nations is the 'other part'. In short the word with the command number Four is setting two generations in direct frame of reference to his Son. The angel refers Isaac as 'thine only son' for emphasis. 'has not withheld thy son, thine only so'. So parallel narrative required call from heaven repeated;
"and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore;" Similarly the Law of the Spirit sets for the body of Christ parameters, the world of the Spirit and of the body respectively. In the case of the body remember the birds that Abraham did not divide? The Law of the Spirit shall not have the holiness of God diluted. Believers in their vile bodies are to ally with the same spiritual body that the Father had prepared for his Son.' but a body hast thou prepared me:-."(Heb.10.5-7)
Wherever blessing is mentioned it is in direct frame of reference to the everlasting Covenant
Good morning
I'm excited for I can join in the discussions with you.
Eschatology ia the study of the order of things in the end times.
The Holy Spirit teaches me and you.
Well,we are to teach all nations the trinity and preach the gospel of Christ. The addresses to this doctrine isMatthew 28:19 amd1Corinthians 9:18.
Unya na!
Lines have crossed to make the meaning nonsensical.
This is characte. " And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.rised by the Alpha Omega aspect."
Corrected version is as follows:
This is characterised by the Alpha Omega aspect." And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."
The Spirit in the expression,'thine only son' makes a distinction between Ishamel and Isaac. The latter is the heir of promise in his Son and none else. They shall be great nations but in Christ Jesus it is a holy nation. "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."(1 Pet.2.9)
Jesus is the Word become flesh. So the Law of the Spirit gives us two parallel narratives one in which Man is after our image andt he humanity of Jesus refers to after our likeness. This is characte. " And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.rised by the Alpha Omega aspect. Literalism of many believers has muddled the clearness of the the word to believe in a lie. Who stands to benefit from these heresies? Jesus was manifested to destroy the works of the devil.
"And behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son." In this substitutional symbolism the ram stands for 'thy seed'. We came across ram, 'and a ram of three years old, in Gen.12.9). The nation of Israel and of the Gentile nations may freely become of one fold." And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."( Jn 10.16)
"And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of theLordit shall be seen."
The mount of the Lord now is established as Zion.' The Spirit uses' to this day' to tie the word of God. " Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation."(Isa.28.16)
"And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me"."
''For now I know thee'' God who fashioned all hearts alike so what he says refers to something else.. In order to understand it let us consider this well known verse, 'Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.'What is faith without works it is dud, counterfeit and mere lip-service what hypocrites do. Abraham in faith didn't wait for God to relent and call the whole thing off. 'And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son." His faith was obedience without which the whole fellowship is a farce. Remember Abraham instructed the two young men to wait for them till they returned. He trusted God's promise never failed. " For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance."(Rom.11.29). Fear of God is our reasonable service so our faith in his holiness supersedes everything else in life. He that spared not his Son shall not he give everything needful for life and godliness must be our well spring that our works are spontaneous and have naturalness of a child. Perhaps the patriarch expected in his obedience he shall only let go from the altar with Isaac revived from it.
The Spirit in the expression,'thine only son' makes a distinction between Ishamel and Isaac. The latter is the heir of promise in his Son and none else. They shall be great nations but in Christ Jesus "Fear of God is our reasonable service so our faith in his holiness supersedes everything else in life. He that spared not his Son shall not he give everything needful for life and godliness must be our well spring that our works are spontaneous and have naturalness of a child. Perhaps the patriarch expected in his obedience he shall only let go from the altar with Isaac revived from it.
"Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off."
Notice the tag, 'third day' and the Spirit intends it as a parallel narrative. "And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." The two young man represents those with whom we have to transact on daily lives but they have no hold on .our worsip of the Lord
"And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together."(v.6)
The Spirit continues with the parallel narrative where the lad labouring under the wood evokes Christ on the way to Golgotha.
" And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together..
In order to illustrate the significance 'they went both of them together' we have these verses, "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."(Heb.4.15-16)
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all."(Isa.53.6)
The lad allowed himself to be bound, a sheep to slaughter,"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."(2 Cor.5.21)
" And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I." (v.11) Abraham walked with God as Noah and Enoch did. Here is a proof that we sojourn here together with our Lord. " The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men."(Psa.33.13-14)
"And said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am." Here the Spirit in the call and the response sets a Father Son colloquy. The Spirit gives us another instance so you cannot miss its purpose. "That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I."(1 Sam.3.4). In Samuel's case it was in the sense of a servant while here it i that of a father. So God, the Father is sounding how deep is his faith.
"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of." God specific as to the land. 'The land is mine' as the earth and the fulness thereof, belong to him. any one of the mountains shall be for symbolism serve just as well. His son is the stone cut not with hands. For this reason in the transfiguration of Jesus no mention of the name. He is the rock of offence and spiritual rock. With such consistency the Spirit has established the symbolic value of the mountain. " the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains," Isa.2.2-3 It is another way of connecting Zion from which the law shall go forth and the holy city, New Jerusalem. "for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."
In the divine will this offering is already embedded so the emblem of the Lamb slain shall be realized in fulness of time. Consequently what is the value of John's witnessing? He saw Jesus, "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."(Jn.1.29,32) Testimony of two is true. Not only John, a man but also the Holy Spirit " And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him." This is one narrative while we have in this colloquy with Abraham a parallel narrative. This being the case God sounded how genuine his faith was.
To sum this up, I think it is best for me to end my interpretation now. I have pretty much explained my thinking as best I can for tonight.
I hope you don't mind me commenting on a post you made to Jesse. I spent today considering whether to respond or not and if so, what I'd care to share.
If you wish to respond back to me, I would be glad to here more from you.
I am off to bed. Lot's of work to do tomorrow in the yard and watch Rosie at the same time. (May not get too much done with her being my "assistant" but hopefully she will take a few good naps and that may give opportunity to do a few tasks without interruption. Hoping to re-pot some plants now that the heat wave has passed as well as spread some dirt from the construction of our deck to top dress the grass.
Always good conversing with you.
to continue.
My understanding is that Jesus as the Word of God is the one who speaks all that the Father wishes to reveal. Being God, Jesus, along with the Holy Spirit know as the Father knows and wills. Jesus is one with the Father (along with the Holy Spirit) and therefore all three Persons of the Godhead work, speak and will in a unified way.
Jesus as God, knows all things just as the Father does, (along with the Holy Spirit), yet, in His humanity, Jesus' knowledge was limited. When Jesus ascended He received back from the Father all of His prior glory, authority, and prerogatives as God.
Therefore, concerning Rev. 1:1 Jesus did know all that the Father knew, but the Father does not speak revelation to man. Jesus, the Word of God, has always done this. He is the Eternal Word and anything said to humanity through prophets was given by the Father who speaks through the Divine Son.
So, I do not agree with your statement that Jesus did not know what the Father gave to Jesus to speak in Rev. 1:1. That does not agree with all of the Scriptures I cited.
The Revelation the Father had Jesus speak to John was a revelation for all believers from that time forward as what is contained in this apocalyptic revelation concerns all believers who would experience the unfolding of these prophecies in time and history and for all believers who will inherit the eternal state described at the end of the book of Revelation and will be the ones singing the praises of God who is Father, Son (the Lamb) and the Holy Spirit with the angels in worship.
It is clear to me that Scriptures says in most events of God speaking, the Father has the Son do the speaking with the exception of the few times the Father spoke in Jesus' earthly life (At his baptism and transfiguration) and also speaks through His angels, but it is Jesus who tells the angels what to say, as Revelation clearly says in a number of places. Angels do not know all of what God wills to reveal, but Jesus does.
Your interpretation of Rev. 1:1 intrigued me.
I think that our interpretations of God giving this revelation to Jesus is linked to the way we think of how the Father and Jesus interact with one another in Scripture.
For me, I think of what Jesus said in these verses:
Jn. 12:49-50
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment,
whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak."
Jn. 8:28
"Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things."
Jn. 7:16
"Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me."
Jn. 4:34
"Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work."
Jn. 5:19
"So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[a] does, that the Son does likewise."
Jn. 5:30
"I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me."
John 8:26
"I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."
John 14:10
"Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works."
And in light of what Jn. 1:1-3 says of Jesus as the Word who was with God in the beginning and is God. Vs. 2-3 says
"The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
And Heb. 11:3
"Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

6/11/25___4:30am Thought:
In Jesus' own words, the scripture
below testify of His Authority.
I believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit: they are One. Amen. Jesus has the same thoughts and actions at the very same moment that God Almighty thinks and acts. Jesus does not have to wait for instruction to do the "works" of God. He possesses the "Authority" to do the works of the God Almighty without asking permission.
John 10:30___
"I and my father are One."" John10:17__17Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

. 18No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father."
God has not revealed to mankind how that works even though they have been trying to explain it for about 2,000 years. Many early Jews suffered or were killed for trying to convince their brethren of this Divine mystery. Peter, James and stephen were three saints that were martyred. John was on the Isle called Patmos.
Judas also walked with him and was not ashamed to be called an apostle, even though he betrayed
Him.

I Corinthians 2:6,7,8__Paul said,
. 6Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 7But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Revelation 1:10 Continued
You might say how does this all help us? Well, in trusting the Lord, realize that nothing's a surprise to Him. It's a surprise to me. You know, when things happen, you say Lord, why did you do that? It's like the Lord wasn't paying attention and He let it happen. No, He's already "been there, done that!"
John saw the future happen, before it happened, while it was happening. When you have that kind of dimension of who God is, and remember this is being ministered to people who are sitting in jail cells, and who are suffering.
So, he says I was caught up in spirit. I saw the Lord's day. And I heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet. That's the Jewish Shofar, the ram's horn that blows. Interesting, the Lord's voice was as a trumpet. What's going to happen when the church gets taken up at the second coming of Christ? There will be a sound of a trumpet. It will be the Lord calling His people home!
So, I heard behind me, and notice this: John says behind me, and for quite a while he's not going to turn around and look at who the person is.
Revelation 1:10 Continued
I like to use the analogy of when you watch a movie for the first time, especially where they create these moments when you're fixed on the screen, and then all of a sudden somebody jumps out and screams, and you just about have a heart attack. Or you really don't know what's going to happen and you're on pins and needles through the whole thing.
Well, after you watch it once, and somebody says have you watched this movie? Yes, I have. Well, I haven't, do you want to watch it with me? Sure, this is going to be good! And you're sitting there, and you know exactly what's going to happen because you've seen it. It's already happened.
If we understand this about God, you and I are living in the present, the now. Every second and every minute is new to us because we've never been there before. Things happen in our day. But God's already been there, and it's already happened. It's a re-run to Him. He's not surprised!
It is just comforting to know that God, who is outside our time domain and space factor in which we live, but with God, He knows everything from the beginning to the end. He already knows. He knows exactly what I'm going to do. He knows exactly the day that I'm going to die. He knows how my day is going to go tomorrow.
Revelation 1:10 Continued
So, they started gathering together in homes privately on Sunday. As a matter of fact, the term the Lord's day did not apply to Sunday until between 200 and 400 A.D. It became more prominent when Constantine in 313 A.D., because he hated the Jews, the Hebrew people, he changed the Lord's day from Saturday to Sunday just to get back at them. So, Sunday was not referred to as the Lord's day until around the 300 A.D mark. It was somewhere between 200 and 400 A.D. before anybody began to use it for that particular purpose.
The scriptures tell us that this is an Old Testament term for the day of the Lord, or Lord's day, and it is a reference to the day of judgment. This is the Lord's day. Right now, it is man's day. And people say, "God's not going to judge anybody." But God has His day coming. It is called the Lord's day in Isaiah 2:12, and Zephaniah 1:14-16.
Even Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 5:2, he used that Jewish phrase from the Old Testament, and says that the day of the Lord is going to come as a thief in the night. But you don't have to worry because you're children of light. Peter also, in 2 Peter 3:10 used the same phrase as the day of judgment of God.
So, putting these two phrases together in Verse 10, I was in spirit on the Lord's day, the day of judgment, is that while physically and geographically he's on the island of Patmos, in the spirit realm, he was caught up to see the Lord's day, the day of judgment, when God brings judgment to the earth.
Now keep this in perspective because when he's caught up in Spirit to see the Lord's day, this period of judgment, he is going to see the future happen before it happens, while it's happening. In the spirit, he saw everything from where he's at, all the way to the end, and what's going to happen at the end. But it hasn't happened yet!
Revelation 1:10 - I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
Then he says I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day. The phrase "I was in the Spirit," in the King James translation, Spirit is capitalized to indicate the Holy Spirit. In the Greek text, there is no word "the." There's no definite article. And the spirit is understood to be not the Holy Spirit, but the spirit realm. And we'll see that throughout the book, he was caught up in spirit.
And you might say doesn't that take the Holy Spirit? Yes! But the understanding is that this is the spirit realm. He says I was caught up in the spirit on the Lord's day. And here goes all the arguments again. Many people believe this is Sunday that this happened.
I'll share with you a little historical background here, and this is one of those topics that cause a lot of debate. In the bible, Sunday is never called the Lord's day. When Jesus rose from the dead, it was called the first day of the week. When the disciples gathered together in the early church, it was called the first day of the week.
In 1 Corinthians 16:2, Paul says that when you gather together the first day of the week, bring your collection of money and have it stored up so that when I come it will be ready. The Jews still met on the Sabbath Day which is Saturday, Friday 6 o'clock to Saturday 6 o'clock.
But the believers met on Sunday, and the reason why they did, at least originally, is because that was the day the Lord was raised from the dead, and that was the day the Lord manifested Himself to the disciples, that Sunday night.
Revelation 1:9 Continued
Well, how would you like to be a 90 plus year old man out here on this island under hard labor? John knows what he's talking about. This is the God that he serves, and the God that he's presenting, in order to be an encouragement to them.
He says I also am a companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ. So that's what he's telling them. The kingdom of God comes in patience and endurance. That's the kind of kingdom that we belong to.
He says I was in the island that is called Patmos, and again, history tells us that he was there from 86 to 96 A.D.
There are actually 50 islands off the west coast of Asia there, and Patmos is one of them. It is 10 miles long and 6 miles wide. And it's approximately 50 miles from the mainland. So, he's out there!
And then he gives the reason why he's there: for the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Now in the Greek text, it says this is the basis for him being there, not the reason that put him there. He says they put me here as a prisoner, but I'm here for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. That's what I'm here for.
