Were the years shorter than 365 days ?
Was a year in those days equal to a Year today ?
Or was it divine intervention ?
But God already knew Isaac from eternity's viewpoint.
Interesting that God called Abraham to walk with God and be perfect. But we all know that Abraham was a sinner like every person is. I get from this verse that as we walk with God, His righteousness covers us while His Spirit is sanctifying us (Making us holy) as He is changing us into Christ's image from glory to glory (bit by bit or moment by moment?).
Since Abraham knew he could father a child (Ishmael) he may have taken this promise into the marriage bed, anticipating conception more than before! And in 3 months Sarah did conceive just as God had said would happen. I'm sure that strengthened Abraham and Sarah's faith even more. Just like experience answers to our prayers strengthen our faith and trust in God.
The first covenant God made was with Himself for Abraham. The second covenant was between God and Abraham, that all males would be circumcised. God knew best to have babies circumcised. My dad was circumcised as an adult. My mom said he was very uncomfortable after it until he healed. She also said that he said that sex was more pleasurable uncircumcised. Maybe God commanded circumcism in order to help men be faithful or considerate of their wives by reducing the pleasure after circumcism. Don't know if this is the case for most men who are circumcised as adults after they have already sexually active. Interesting that other cultures with a low view of women circumcise girls in order that they do not feel much pleasure in intercourse. God's way is always better.
I can tell from this verse that Abraham loved Ishmael and wanted him to be included in the covenant, too. I think he laughed because he realized his and Sarah's age and knew that it would take a miracle for them to have a child. I don't think that he didn't believe God's promise. He just found it humorous. God did not punish him for laughing. He knew Abrahams heart. Ishmael's 12 princes are said to have seeded the Arab nations. Interesting, because that makes the Arab people Semitic if they trace their line to Ishmael or any of the 6 children Abraham fathered with Keturah after Sarah died. It seems that Jews want to own the sole right to be considered Semitic. Truth is, any person descended from Shem is Semitic and anyone descended from Eber is Hebrew, not just the Israelites. Something to think about. maybe broadening our ideas about the people that sprang from that area.
Interesting that He was making the covenant with Abraham, not with Abraham and Sarah. Does this mean that God saw Abraham and Sarah as one inn Abraham, harkening back to Adam and Eve in Genesis?
I am concerned about what has and is transpiring in the Middle East. Such turmoil for such a long, long time. And in these times it doesn't just involve those who live there. It involves the whole world. Islam has spread across Africa and Asia as well as the middle east. Many are very devout and committed to honor their god no matter what. Are we more devout and committed to honor the True God more than the Muslims of the world? We need to be. WE have the most excellent promises of all of history. Let us seek for the fulfillment of these promises to be accomplished God's way, not ours. this takes faith and wisdom and courage. I pray to have these in fuller measure as I face the senior years of my life.
Some people have commented about the re-establishment of Israel to the Jewish people. Some say that those currently occupying Israel are not genetically Jews but Khazars. I've read some about this idea. Some sources say that DNA of the Ashkenazi Jews (originally from the Khazar region) have Jewish descent. They may be mixed blood. Also, there are Sephardic Jews that have returned to Israel. And I read that there were people of Israelite genetic make-up living in Israel before it became an independent state. Concerning Zionism, it does have many aspects that are not biblically sound. Even so, Israel has been re-established and open to receive those of Abraham's seed to the state.
Also, I read that only people of Israeli descent (perhaps even only Jewish) can be citizens in Israel. Everyone else is considered a resident alien. This contributes to the strife between the Israelis and Palestinians. Palestinians never had their own state in this region. But they desire it, since they have been there for a long time. so, having the Jews be given the area for a Jewish state results in strife in this area. I don't think it will ever be settled. Israel's borders are smaller that the area promised to Abraham by God. They do not yet possess all of the land of Promise yet.
I recommend reading up on this subject.
In kindness.

Some say that the world's land mass was centralized at this time and began to break apart and drift into two hemispheres. This could explain how easy it would have been for these generations to spread out and inhabit all lands of the earth. The breaking apart of the continents would have provided obstacles that allowed peoples to become isolated and develop genetic characteristics, lifestyles, and cultural traditions specific to their areas of habitation.
Also, the presence of similar societal laws, architectural structures, religious practices across the globe from ancient past seems to harken back to a common civilization at one time, which would be here in Mesopotamia.
I have wondered if Noah had any written account of life pre-flood or made any post flood that were passed down to his descendants. If so, they must have gotten lost at some point, as Moses was the one who put these Scriptures in writing.
I think it highly likely that pre-flood peoples had writings.
Acts 17:27
Jeremiah 7:25
Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them..
Amos 7:14-15
I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel..
Amos 3:8
The Lion has roared, who will not fear?
Amos 4:12
Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel..
Amos 8:2
Then said the Lord unto me; The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them anymore..
Philippians 3:10
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection..
Upon waking, Noah discovered what had happened. Maybe his wife told him what had happened, or Shem and Japhet.
The text doesn't say. But whatever happened, it was not brushed away as if of no consequence. He pronounced a curse on Ham's son Canaan and blessed Shem and Japheth. Noah was probably sad that he could not place a blessing on all of his sons, but in his own counsel, he felt he needed to give a curse to Ham's son, Canaan. Blessings and curses in the Bible were often given to children when a father was near death. Was this the case for Noah, since Canaan had been born and he would most likely be the youngest grandchild. Was this event at the end of the 350 years Noah lived after the flood?
We don't read anymore about Noah after this chapter. Be sad if this these were some of the last words Ham heard from his father. We don't hear anymore about this family after this chapter except in the Table of Nations in Chapter 10, so perhaps it was near the end of his life. 350 years had past since they came out of the ark after the flood. Noah would have seen many generations come from his sons. He died before Abraham was born, but his legacy of faith was passed down from Shem to Abraham, just like Adam's legacy was passed down to Noah through Seth's lineage. God always keeps a remnant!
There's another story where a king is told, set thine house in order; you're going to die. He repents and lives longer.
Type SET IN ORDER into the search box. It helps us study deeper, God who is a God of order.
Satan is a god of CHAOS. Whatever he finds that is in order, he tears at it until it's in sin and disarray. That is his FRUIT. know all of them. That's how we know he's trying to set our homes, work, friendships, etc, in Chaos. pray and get Church members to agree with us.
Let's be sensitive to order vs chaos. It's a pattern for success or loss. Titus learned that, traveling with Paul: as did the Disciples that traveled with Jesus.
Job had a great life until Chaos showed up on the scene. Job trusted God, despite the mess around him and "friends that Accused him of some secret sin.
Satan was around taking notes and spying on Jobs weak areas. Job sacrificed & made offerings for his partying children. Satan chose to attack Job, through his FAMILY. He wiped out everything Job had, with storms, sores, maybe depression.
Accuser, is another name of Satan. We all need to pay attention to the signs of his presence. Stay in the Bible and READ IT OUT LOUD. Satan doesn't want to hear it. Praise, and sing Jesus Loves Me if that's all you can think of, in the "battle."
When Jesus was facing a battle, He got away from the crowd and Prayed. Always. That's our Example.
When we see CHAOS in our lives, it's evidence that satan is involved. Know who your enemy is. Don't lose your faith and trust in God. Decree "IT IS WRITTEN"+ scripture, as Jesus did.
Go on YouTube, type in Spiritual Warfare sermon: Derek Prince or Charles Capps. Learn how to fight back; in the power of Jesus name, shed blood + Ephesians 6. Demons are invisible, but we see the chaos of their presence. Fight and don't back down. We are the victors, not victims.
God also gave the animals and Noah and family the same command He gave to Adam and Eve. "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth."
When I was younger-around 18 or 19, I was considering how many children I'd hoped to have. Knowing that God had never rescinded this command, I had to ask myself, "How fruitful am I willing to be in this regard?" I am from a large family of 10 children and I saw how my parents trusted God to provide a way for each new child to be cared for. We were very poor, so this trust in God impressed me. We always had food and a home. My parents sacrificed more than most people of the day so that we would have these basic needs.
So, I remember considering these things and praying, "Lord, give me a pro-life heart like yours, not like the world."
I knew that one look at the world in both animal and human populations that God was exceedingly generous in bringing forth new life. So, I had to expand my thinking and consider having more children than most people my age at that time. A few years later when I married after completing college, my husband and I agreed on this subject and were willing to follow whatever God wanted of us. We ended up having only 3 children,( I had thought we would have had about 6) but I had serious complications with each pregnancy and/or births. We prayed for a year after our third child was born to get a lead from God. His lead was to stop at 3. Deciding to stop at 3 children was one of the saddest days of my life. But I am glad God taught us to be open to as many children as HE wished for us to have, not just what we wanted. It's a challenge to think this way and cooperate with God on this rather than against Him. But I highly recommend it. Pray!

Then God spoke to Noah with a promise. Amazing!
Think about it, if Noah alone was righteous in His generation, would there be anyone standing for God today if the flood had not occurred? Would today have even ever came? Praise the Lord for his mercy! Ps. 19:9 says that the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous. Do we trust Him to judge rightly? Do we believe that he will judge everyone pre and post flood in perfect truth and righteousness? He knows the hearts of everyone and the plans He has for each person. He will judge all of the babies that died in the flood perfectly.
As I read this chapter the most important thing that stood out to me was that Noah lived out his faith by doing ALL that God had told him to do. It must have been hard to endure 500 years in a world so full of evil and violence. Did this make it harder or easier for Noah to stay true to God? Did he set his face like stone in the Lord's direction instead of the world's direction? Did experiencing the reality of living in such a wicked world strengthen his determination to follow God? I think it did. I think He grieved over the wickedness as the Lord did. I think he hated the wickedness like God did. I think he desired that people would repent and turn back to God like the Lord desires. In essence, the Spirit formed in Noah the "mind of Christ"; Christ was formed in him by the Spirit. This, too, is for us. If you ever wondered about what the point of developing godly habits was if we are forgiven for all of our sins in Jesus, think about Noah and the challenges he faced. His faith endured to the end. May that be true of each of us, too.
Either way, these giant offspring were exceedingly wicked and powerful. It is likely they contributed greatly to the acceleration of wickedness on the then earth by the time of Noah. Perhaps this is when mankind began worshipping renowned men or predecessors, making images of them and temples for the idols to "abide".
I don't have any information on the time frame where this intermixing first occurred. Anyone out there with thoughts or info? How long did God hold back from deciding upon judgment? I believe after God told Noah to build the ark and announced the flood, He also said that the years of mankind would be 120 years. I think that speaks to the number of years between Calling Noah and the day the flood began, 120 years (not lifespan).
Some have commented why God destroyed the animals. The text says that ALL flesh had corrupted the ways God had intended for them. So, it seems the natural order of all breathing creatures was corrupted. It doesn't say how, though. God said that the world was filled with violence. It seems that anarchy was prevailing throughout the world. Perhaps governing systems had collapsed, and anarchy filled the void. It took mankind about 1600+ years to get to this point. Not really very long. God was grieved.
So glad God spared Noah and pairs of animals to replenish the earth. He was going to give the earth a new start instead of total destruction. He could have translated Noah and have been done with it. But the Lord had a plan that was too be accomplished no matter what mankind did. In the big scheme of things, the flood was a blessing to the world. The set number of humans had not all been born yet. The world was not filled to the capacity God had pre-determined. And, more importantly, the Redeemer had not come and rule and reign yet. There is an end to this world age. God knows when that will be. We can be assured that His plans will be accomplished because he is all-knowing and all-powerful.
Noah obeyed God.
