Discuss 2 Kings 1

Hi Catherine. I'm unsure where you got that detail from, as my study of the chronology of events during this period show differently. If I might share my gleanings.

In the Kingdom of Judah: King Jehoshapat reigned from 873-848 ( 1 Kings 22:41) and then his son Jehoram was co-regent with him from 853 ( 2 Kings 8:16). After his father died, he continued in his reign (i.e. from 853 & then continued on from 848-841).

In the Kingdom of Israel: King Ahab reigned from 874-853 ( 1 Kings 16:29) & the Prophet Elijah was alive at that time ( 1 Kings 17:1). Elijah also lived & ministered under the next king, King Ahaziah's reign (853-852; 1 Kings 22:51) and then into the reign of King Jehoram (852-841; 2 Kings 1:17). This king was also known as Joram. By the way, it is a coincidence that we see the two Jehorams reigning side-by-side in the two kingdoms; unfortunately, both were bad kings.

When that "writing" (mentioned in 2 Chronicles 21:12) came to Jehoram, the King of JUDAH, (NOT Israel); though Elijah was actually a prophet to the Kingdom of Israel), Elijah would still have been alive. We're not told which year the 'letter' was sent, or received by Jehoram. The 'letter' might even have been delivered to Jehoram some time after Elijah's translation into Heaven, if Elijah wrote it just prior to his departure. So the way I understand it, is that Elijah was well & truly on Earth at this time, though possibly his age & distance may have prevented him from actually making that journey to Jerusalem in the southern kingdom.

As a footnote, I should say that the reigning years of the various kings are taken from reliable sources that have done the calculations going back into biblical history & from other historical documents; i.e. I've not guesstimated those dates.

Hi S. Lynn. Yours were interesting thoughts, whether God would have forgiven Ahab's son, Ahaziah, if he also repented as his father Ahab did. As you probably read in 2 Kings 1:1-18, Ahaziah was looking through the lattice work (window) & maybe leaning heavily against it, when it broke & he fell down some distance & seriously injured himself. Instead, of seeking the Lord for healing, he sent out men to enquire from a heathen god. But Elijah, God's prophet, stepped in & assured Ahaziah that for his wickedness (& of course from God's Word to Ahab ( 1 Kings 21:29)), that Ahaziah would be the one to bear the evil done by himself & his father. So, it wasn't entirely because of the sins of Ahab, but Ahaziah himself was also very wicked to warrant his demise.

It's difficult to know how God would have dealt with Ahaziah if he too repented, but we do know, in hindsight, that all the successive kings of Israel after Ahaziah were counted as 'bad kings', with only Jehu doing some good, though he too was considered as 'bad'. So, somewhere along that kingly line, punishment would have been given out, & probably to a greater extent (with suffering) as sins against God accumulated.

Lundy...In 2 Kings 2:11 we read of Elijah & Elisha walking along & a chariot of fire came between them & Elijah was separated from Elisha and taken up in a whirlwind to Heaven.

2019, collectively we the world are severely wounded, sick, ..., and we are calling on everything but JEHOVAH GOD, and TIME is about to end according to the clock of GOD. Example, read the book the book of Revelation viewing it as a 24 hour clock, a clock with only 24 hours on it and when the 24 hours end there will be TIME no more for me and you. John 3:16 is the answer as the clock end for us

We must become aware of the worldly things that we have in our lives that we are holding onto that oppose obedience to God, and run contrary to what he is telling us to do. If we persist, we are given over to and grow in doublemindedness: becoming SO EARTHLY MINDED THAT WE ARE NO HEAVENLY GOOD.

These 100 50 and 50 which was killed, was ordered by Ahaziah to take a message to Elijah. I don't know why God killed them.

The lesson for me in the passage is that;
1. Humility: the third captain and his fifty humbled themselves before God in the live of elijah, no wonder this time around, the holyspirit spoke to elijah which never happened in the first two cases.
2. Reverence God:if the king had hold God in high esteem, he would have consulted him first. but this is the problem with most christians, may God help us.

God is and always will be! No other God before me! I am that I am!!!!

PRAISE THE LORD GOD! We must put our trust in THE LORD at all time and we must declare HIM to the world and all of the devils in it and in he'll. MESSIAH KING JESUS CHRIST IS LORD GOD! YHVH! THE LORD IS SOON TO RETURN. THE DAY OF THE LORD IS AT HAND. The mark of the beast is taking place. The law is the world "national id act 2005" it is an international law "all must scan hands for id and life.

I had read this story before, and I wanted to read it again, I couldn't find it, So I asked the Author of this book to show me where the story was, and he did !! But the meat of the story to me is -- No matter what the situation is-- you seek God the FATHER ABOUT IT FIRST !!

We should trust in God at all time because he never disappoints, Elijah had faith in Him and He didn't disappoint Elijah

For me, 2 Kings 1 shows me how faith in God is needed in our life. Elijah's faith in God was so strong he did nto even fear these men who came to get him. He just told them the God he serve would rain fire on them. I strive daily to get this type of faith. The good news is we all have all our life to work this type of faith into our lives

it is a great lesson for today christian to be rour, The Book James 4:7 Resist the Devil and he shall free away from you, until you teach your enemy the greated lesson, before he will stop attacking you.

The captain of the 3rd fifty acknowledged God in Elijah and humbled himself before Him and he was spared with his fifty.Anybody that acknowledges God will be honored accordingly.

That Elijah knew his Master(Our Lord God) and put forth his total faith in Him is quite eminent and encouraging to us saints of God! Imagine the first set of chosen 50 soldiers and the second batch and finally the third who runs the king's
serious errands(i.e life and death
matters)comes already charged and with
their rough/crude weapons and yet
Elijah didn't run away nor hide himself.

We should enquire of the Creator (God) not the created.
"Thou shall have no other gods before me" says God. Ex. 20:3.

THAT we to put God in our life first. We also should trust God.

Elijah was a Tisbite and of the inhabitants of Gilead.

This chapter tells that we must trust our God all the time.When we got a problem we must seek him first.We must not seek help from foreign gods or people that practice sootsaying.If we do not put our God first he will he will be jealous and angry and he will allow distarous things to happen to us.When we trust in him he will answer by fire.

It seems Elijah appears out of nowhere, while other prophets can be traced to their tribes and heritage. There is no clear indication of his background, and makes me wonder if some books of the Bible are missing. Is it just me thinking this?

I believe that it is better we remain faithful to God always than seeking for help elsewhere as Ahaziah did .

at first i thought Elijah was very mean to kill in that manor but i never thought about God needed to prove a point. honor the fact that he is God alone.
