Discuss 2 Kings 25

The destruction of the first Temple is recorded in 2 Kings 25:8,9: "And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem: And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man's house burnt he with fire."

Then we have the Temple re-built, with the full account in Ezra chapters 1 to 6. And this temple remained intact until it was razed again in AD 70. The prophet Daniel wrote on this ( Daniel 9:24-27) & Jesus spoke of it also ( Matthew 24:1,2). Of course, history also records this as occurring.

Do you have other information on the frequency of the temple's destruction?

    Hi Chris

I've done some research and found out that:

The name of Peter's father was (Eng) Jona or Jonah, (Hbr) Yona or Yonah, (Gk) Ionas. It means "dove, pigeon". It is the same name as Prophet Jona in the Old Testament.

Apostole John's name in Gk is Ioannes, in Hbr Yohanan. It means God is gracious or God's grace or God's gift. I was alwayd wondering why I never found that name in the Old Testament, did it appear for the first time in Jesus' times? Visiting a Jewish website I found

out that it appears many times in the Old testament but in the Hebrew form of it i.e. Ezra 8:12. , 2 Kings 25:23, 1 Cronicles 6:9 etc . (Eng) Johanan (Hbr) Yohanan.

This account in 2 Kings and in Jeremiah concerning what became of Zedekiah and his family have always burned in my mind. The killer part was he had been CONSTANTLY warned through prophecy. This man had witnessed the power of God and how he used Nebuchadnezzar to judge Jerusalem before. It just boggles my mind that he still did evil and even rebelled against the man who put him in his position, though he had NO power.

The prophecy given to Hezekiah in his pride about his sons and them being castrated is utterly stupefying. Another man taking your manhood because of God's judgement, that makes me fear God even more. May God deliver me from my own arrogance and unbelief so I don't end up like Zedekiah, family slain and eyes gouged out. God is truly to be feared.

    Tunji,

Not sure if you replied to me, and not sure of the chronological order you are working on. Nabopolassar was Nebuchadnezzar's father the first king Neo-Babylonian Empire, Nebuchadnezzar was the second. His father died shortly after Nebuchadnezzar came back from defeating Egypt and on the way back, he invaded Jerusalem and took Daniel and others 606-605 BC. Nebuchadnezzar is the only king mentioned it happened all so close his father was not named.

However, the major distress to Jerusalem did not come then but began after Jehoiakim rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar some three years later around 601B.C. 2 Kings 24:1. Nebuchadnezzar in his eighth year, 605-8=597, laid siege to Jerusalem and captured it in 597 B.C. 2 Kings 24 2 Chronicles 36:6 says Jehoiakim was carried away in fetters to

Babylon, whether alive or dead and his son, Jehoiachin, was taken captive to Babylon.

This was the first major amount of the captives of the Jews; in addition to King Jehoiachin, most of the nobility, and most of the treasury, they took to Babylon in 597 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar was then placed on the throne as a puppet, Zedekiah. 2 Chronicles 36:5-11.

Zedekiah. Over time, in malice of many admonitions from the prophet Jeremiah, Zedekiah, he too rebelled, and the Babylonians laid siege to Jerusalem once again in 587 B.C. Jeremiah 1

This siege produced devastating famine and pestilence within the metropolis, which finally fell to the Babylonians in 586 B.C. They destroyed the city and walls and burnt down the temple several weeks later on the ninth day of the month AV, (the same day of the same month that Titus destroyed the Second Temple, six hundred, fifty-six years afterward, in 70 A.D. 2 Kings 25:8-12.

The second temple was dedicated in 516 BC, 70 years after the first temple was destroyed. Daniel was taken 606-605 BC and the temple was destroyed 19 years later in 586 BC.

If this is not what you are working on let me know, I may help.

    God bless,

If we're just going by what is written in this Biblical translation, it appears the chronological order is Daniel 1 being account of capture & being taught in the ways of the "Chaldeans". I likewise was studying Daniel recently & found interesting how the books are like that.

Daniel 1:1, Daniel 2:1, dates of significant recognition. 2 Kings 24:1-2,

Historical insight 2 Kings 24:3-16, this appears to be the time that brought Daniel & his friends into that place of capacity. Note they left the poor in the land 2 Kings 24:14,17,18 which may explain the historical reference mentioned by other comment. 2 Kings 25:8-12,

    Stated 19th year of Nebuchadnezzar._._.

Please note Daniel 4:6-9,18, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged Daniel as "knowing the spirit of the holy" GOD was in him, therefore it shows Chpt 4 being after the first interpretation. Daniel 4:29, Daniel 4:23,

    Daniel 5:11, Daniel 5:20-22, Daniel 5:31, Daniel 6:28,

Please note Daniel 7:1 it goes back to time of Daniel 5. Daniel 4, to Daniel 2, In some ways, not in the same vision but the statement in Daniel 2:47, So consistantly Daniel jumps back into moments within previous Chapters to add additional situations within those time frames

Daniel 1:20, chapter 2, could also explain this statement of why Daniel 1:20, states that.

    Notice also in Daniel 5:10-14,

Hopefully these are helpful in your study

Because of sin and iniquity the city of Jerusalem, and temple has been ransacked and the walls destroyed. The royal family has been taken captive and scattered. So much has transpired and all had been prophesied by Jeremiah and the prophets. Even as our country cry out in aguish for the glory of God, but they do not want to truly worship the Lord as He so rightfully deserves. Instead we question God's motives and intentions. Many will not worship God, the Lord Jesus Christ because they claim He does not have the true love for us. They wish Him to stop the hate, and killing. Not realizing that all the sin in the world is because of our own evil, fallen nature. Thank you Lord for your great love and compassion, but especially for your patience. Help me to desire your truth and grace this day. Praise your Holy name.

Please shine your face upon us; bless our walk in you and help us to know you intimately through your Word. May this day be the day of grace for many.

Corruption among each other when no law followed. Caldees helped Babylon overtake Judah and when ruler assigned to Judah the Caldees not like it and over took the city to themselves.

George, you are right, from what I can also find, the names of those months are not given, only their number.

    1. The 4th Month: Tammuz ( Jer 39:2; 52:6,7)

    2. The 5th Month: Ab ( Num 33:38; 2 Kings 25:8-10; Jer 1:3; Jer 52:12-30)
