Discuss 2 Samuel 18

Hi Dara Susan. In 2 Samuel 18:21-33, the 'Cushi' mentioned there was a messenger of Joab (David's military commander). In Hebrew, this name appears 'as one who is descended from Cush, hence 'Cushi'). And you can see the name Cush in Genesis 10:6-8 (a son of Ham, the son of Noah). So in the 2 Samuel reference, Joab calls to the Cushi, or the Cush-ite, without stating his name. Maybe, because of his origins & his lower position before Joab, first names weren't used, as was done for Ahimaaz who also wanted to take the message of Absalom's death to David. So the meaning of 'Cush' is unknown, maybe because it was an area of the Nile delta in Egypt.

That's possible Mark, though I believe that 2 Samuel 18:7,8 refers more to the 'wooded areas' or countryside. As the battle was in "the wood of Ephraim" (v6) & "scattered over the face of the country" (v8), it seems more likely that factors such as hunger, thirst, exhaustion, wild beasts, etc. may have taken their toll on the men, more so than the sword or arrow.

Could 'the wood devoured more people that day than the sword' also include those killed by arrows (made of wood)? We know that archery was used by king David...

This chapter shows the fulfilment of the word of God that vengeance is His. David did not want His son to be killed but the wrath of God was on him as he rose against his father and disobeyed the Lord. it is also a lesson for us to take the word of God as it is, an never to choose fame and conspire against the anointed as God always fights their battles.

It's shows not to rebel against your parents. Absalom was filled with wicked ways. David mourned because his son not only rebelled against his parent, but God as well, he wasn't yet saved, he denied God. Sometimes it don't tell what happened to this person or that person. exp: What happened to Joseph the husband of Mary, Jesus's Mother. It never said that he died or if he's still alive.

David did not weep over the baby he lost due to his sin concerning Uriah the Hittite. (Even after fasting for a week). However, he wailed over Absalom. Why? Because he knew that little baby was with the Lord Jesus ( 2 Samuel 12:23 ) and he would see him again. And he also knew that Absalom was not a true believer in God. David affirms his love by saying, "would God I had died for thee".

"And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!" David was a good man with normal feelings of love for his son, that didn't change because his son was evil; but his heart was broken inconsolable when he lost his son. Love will be hurt.

Because Jehoshaphat made affinity with Ahab by joining their children in marriage, the result was that apostasy, rebellion and wickedness threatened to put out entirely the Light of the house of David, through whom Christ was to come. Absalom had no children. His tragic and short life is like so many evil children of godly parents; they have no idea, that all their intense selfishness and heathen ways, causes so much unbearable grief to those who love them; and then they are taken away by a catastrophe! No monument that makes for himself, can make his life's character and doings any better in God's view in the day of judgment.

The pillar was placed before Absalom had children, or perhaps the children died in youth. They are not mentioned in the genealogies.

The wood devoured more suggests divine intervention in the battle. God would help us to fight our battles if we invite Him in total submission.

Brenda, my sentiment is precisely. The Scriptures said he Absalom had three sons and one daughter who he named after his sister Tamar. It's a mystery for him to say such a thing. Glory be to God in the highest through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ amen!

Absalom is still David son despite the fact that the devil is using to afflict David

Absalom had 3 sons and a daughter, so why did he say he had no son in remembrance of him? I understand David 's grief. We raise our children to the best of our ability and yet sometimes they still stray.

God’s word is true; because of David’s sin, God allowed judgment on David’s family. God forgave him for his sin, but David still had to reap what he sowed. So let that be a lesson to us! “For the wages of SIN is DEATH”!!!

We wept with all the parents at Sandy Hook, as David wept for his son Absalom, and only God can comfort those who have lost loved ones in such a time as this. We must look to heaven from which our help comes from, for God is the God of all comfort, and He comforts those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from Him. God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, so that who ever believes in Him would not perish, but would have everlasting life. Thank God that death is not the end, because Jesus is the first fruits of those from the grave. One day we will see our loved ones again, and we will rejoice to see that day come.

@ Woah awesome perspective on Absalom's death. I would of never thought he built the pillar to glorify himself but that makes a lot of since.

The real reason for building a pillar himself was because of prideful arrogant wickedness. He was in love with his beauty and wanted to immortalize himself through history. Which lead to his indignant death.
