Hi Victor. I believe that it was jealousy & then revenge that caused Joab to kill Amasa. If you read 2 Samuel 17:25, you'll see that Amasa was made "captain of the host instead of Joab" by Absalom. Then 2 Samuel 19:13, King David confirmed Amasa's position "continually in the room of Joab". So, as soon as Joab got the chance, he took Amasa by surprise as Amasa didn't expect Joab to be approaching him with an evil intent & was murdered in cold blood (Joab was part of Abishai's army). Thus Joab's revenge for not being made captain of the host was fulfilled.
I understand that when "Lot sat in the gate of Sodom" ( Genesis 19:1), this was a significant place for administration, welcoming visitors, or for policing/judgement. I've thought of Lot as having integrated himself well into that society & even risen to a level of holding a venerable position before its citizens. One can compare the use of the 'gate' in 2 Samuel 19:8; Esther 5:13; Psalm 69:12; Proverbs 22:22.
And in truth, the sins of Sodom were probably far more rampant in its many forms & intensities, that would have moved God in such a mighty way against that city's inhabitants. And even today, peoples & governments all over the world scoff & scorn the Word of God & the coming Day of Great Wrath upon them. Man will never learn, 'professing themselves to be wise, they showed themselves, fools'.
Did you notice? David feared GOD & would not lay his hand on GOD's anointted & felt remorseful for cutting Saul's garment.

Conflict Between King David and Joab - In Reply on 2 Samuel 20 - 3 years ago
2 Samuel 19:13. Benson Commentary
And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.
2 Samuel 19:13. Say to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, &c. - That is, nearly related to me, being my sister's son. God do so to me, and more also, &c. - He solemnly promises to prefer him to the highest command in the kingdom; for he now thought it a fit time to depress Joab, who was grown insufferably insolent and imperious, and who, through his credit with the army, had protected himself in the commission of the greatest crimes. He had slain Abner most perfidiously in cold blood, and killed Absalom contrary to the king's express command, and now lately had insulted him in his sorrow. Having, therefore, now an opportunity of transferring the command to another person, who had as great an interest in the people's favour as Joab, he gladly embraces it, that so he might both chastise Joab for his faults, and rescue himself from the bondage in which that general had hitherto held him. Some, however, have thought that, considering Joab's very faithful services to David in all the changes of his fortune, and that his violent measures proceeded in part from a regard to him, as judging them necessary for his safety and tranquillity, David's conduct in this instance, in making Amasa captain of the host in Joab's room, is not an amiable trait in his character, and was not a prudent step at this time, especially considering Joab's violent temper: and, it must be acknowledged, it brought on the murder of Amasa.
Verse 5~David mourned the death of his son and while this is natural, Joab had to remind him of all that the people had went through because of Absalom's rebelliousness.
