Discuss Amos 6

  • HIRED ENTERTAINMENT vs BIBLICAL PRAISE and WORSHIP - In Reply on 1 Chronicles 9 - 3 years ago
    1 Samuel 18:6

...... that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music.

    2 Samuel 6:5

And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

    2 Chronicles 5:13, 16 and 7:6

    It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying, For God is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

    Psalms 87:7, 68:25, 150:4

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

    Amos 6:5

    That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David;

    Habakkuk 3:19

The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief SINGERS on my stringed instruments.

    Genesis 30: 27-28

28 And he said, Appoint me thy Wages, and I will give it.

Comment: We live in different times. I think the members of the Church should praise the Lord as a group. Special songs should be free-will offerings. Sacrifice of Praise blesses God, as we see from scripture. He gave Israel victory over their enemies in battle, time after time.

However today, Churches are under pressure to hire professional bands and singers, which travel from church to church, and incur expenses.

You need to search this out, seek the counsel of your elders in your church. Discuss the budget. Also, do not neglect to teach the flock the power of Corporate Praise and Worship vs pew sitters. STAND and sing unto the Lord.

    Ephesians 6:13 and Matthew 5

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.

And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him two

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

But I say unto you, LOVE your enemies, BLESS them that curse you, DO GOOD to them that hate you, and PRAY for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends the rain on the just and on the unjust.

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans do the same?

And if ye salute your friends only, what do ye more than others? do not even the mean people so?

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

I know you've read this part. It's very hard to pray for them. You have to stand fast and do excellent work, AS UNTO JESUS! Make HIM proud.

I had the same problem with the bosses and unholy coworkers. If you are working as if Jesus is your Boss; this will be easy.

Pray every day for them all to be promoted.

No sour looks. Be helpful but don't get drawn into office GOSSIP. Having done all, TO STAND. If you will do this as to Jesus your Big Boss: He's gonna take care of you. Stand solid in faith!

It works! I saw a lot of mean people get promoted out...and I had 'peace in the valley'.

The Lord is my Shepard. I shall not want.

Always remember the Giant God that watches over us. His spirit is all around us. He knows when we are Lonely..Hurting..sad.. Wanting Him close. His Love has such depth that it could move the tallest heaviest mountain. His Light so strong it blinds you. Been to Heaven..saw truth in Him. Saw His Heavenly Son fighting for me. He is real. The Bible...His words to take care of us..His creations..is Strong truth who He is...and what He wants for us..the evilness of this world is now being shown strong...fight as we never fought before. Who do you choose? Think...think heavy...Decide now. The power of His words.. The Blood of His Son...The suffering of His Son...fighting and dying for our Sins--should be enough to turn to Him as never before. Fight we must...Fight as the evilness tries and take Him from us. On your knees with your Bible..Fight...Fight...you must as the days become as His words warned us in Revelation. God's people must never turn back. Remember His words.. A brighter tomorrow we will have!!!

Esther 8:17 and many of the people of the land became Jews.

If the people of the land "became Jews" it wasn't by blood, so it must have been ceremonial and believing in the true God. Were they then part of the nation of Isreal that can claim promises from God?

    Provisions or Possessions

In this chapter we see how God despises Israel's pride as the people competed in extravagance while they continued to suppress the poor. In making application we see how the Lord hates a proud look as it is self worship. The Lord provides all of our needs and there is nothing wrong with providing for our families but when our provisions become possessions or idols the Lord will judge. How about you? Are your provisions from the Lord a possession of pride? Let us learn from our text today and the example of Israel to see how their pride of their possessions at the expense of others brought them the judgement of the Lord.

The time has come for us the people of God to live righteous, holy and upright life before almighty God. Judgement shall begin in the house of the Lord. We must be in a place to hear well done, my good and faithful servant... We must serve our God in spirit and in truth withholding nothing.
Blessed be the name of our most high God - Jesus.

This was just highlighted just now, by accident as I scrolled for something else in Matthew, that NEVER happens, so it may be a sign from God. I wanted to share this with you all, please remember Christ's words! He cannot lie, AMEN! IDK what is in store, but God delivered Israel when they were between a Red Sea and their enemy behind them. How? God just decided to part the sea and make a way (out of no way)!

Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?"

continuing... Irene; You may know already, but the reason that the English word "LORD" is used, is because the Jews adopted a tradition that they are not permitted to speak or pronounce the Name of "I AM;" which many transliterate as Yehovah. That's why they always say Adonai (LORD), instead; and use all capitals to signify Him whom they can't name! Amos 6:10 announced this as a coming punishment.
  • A disciple on Revelation 4 - 7 years ago
Yeshua is by interpretation Yehovah [is] Salvation. Yehovah, or Yahweh, is "I AM." When Moses asked God His name; God answered, "I AM THAT I AM" and told him to say to the son's of Israel, that I AM has sent me to you. In Amos 6:10, there is a foretelling of how the Jews would at one point, no longer be "allowed" to speak the name of the LORD; as a part of the punishment for their impenitent ways.

The "Original" in Hebrew; Yode He Vav He, pronounced by many as, Yehovah; was re-written as "Adonai" or, LORD by the Jews, out of fear of pronouncing the Name of "I AM." There is a verse in Amos which I believe foretells that the Jews at one point, would forbid to say the LORD's name. Amos 6:10 "...for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD." Since then, most translations do the same.

A warning to those that are concerned only with their own comforts and luxury living and not concerned about the things of God will be the first to go into captivity. When calamity comes, their hearts become so hardened against God that they do not want to give Him praise in any thing.

Prosperity that enveloped the royal family and prominent members of society but did not trickle down to the poor. It is this uneven distribution of wealth in the 18th that set the atmosphere for the social crimes that Amos so violently abhorred.

  • Becky Adedokun on Nehemiah 1 - 10 years ago
Nehemiah did five things after he received the report about destructions of Jerusalem. He was sober and sat down with repentance heart, he wept for their sins, he mourned with contrite heart, feeling regret and sorrow for days for Israelites's sins and their offenses against God. Nehemiah also denied himself of pleasure of food by fasting which also was for days and he prayed seeking for forgiveness of the nation of Israel. Isaiah 66 verse 2b says "But this the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word." Believers in Christ, all people alike should do these five things in seeking God's mercy upon our nation for restoration, healing and blessings. God is looking for a contrite heart and humble spirit. The question is, will you pray for this nation like Nehemiah?. It was him alone that pray for Jerusalem at that time, me and you can pray for our nation, homes, schools and body of Christ in like manner. God said, He will look on us and restore, heal and safe us. The question is what did you with bad news you heard about this nation, homes, schools and about things happening in the body of Christ. Complacency have taken over. Let us take up the task to be concerned with the situation of our nation, schools and homes; Amos 6:1 and Isaiah 32:11, let us meditate prayerfully on these bible verses and pray for Holy Spirit to ignite our prayer life to pray for our nation this year 2014 and henceforth.

The verse was difficult for me to understand. The other translations were very helpful. I need to pray more and ask God for understanding before I read His Word.

we who are shepherds must feed the flock in accordance with the word of our chief shepherd (lord Jesus) John 21:15-17. But today many shepherds have turned themselves to princes in self enrichment and oppression of the flock.
