Whole counsel of God: Reading the Bible and prayer

There is the old saying "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." The same principle exists with the Word of God. Psalm 119 for instance is the longest chapter in all of scripture and incessantly talks about loving God's law. Hungering and thirsting for the Word is something said to characterize the last days ( Amos 8:11-12). This verse talks of a famine for God's word; but we also see Jesus talking about "hungering and thirsting for righteousness ( Matthew 5:6).

It seems counterintuitive or a "no brainer" to consider reading scripture and prayer as something a believer should do; but it has been my experience the enemy will use all sorts of tactics to dissuade believers from focusing on the Word and probably even more so on prayer. It is easy for the enemy to allow us with minimum distractions to read the Word of God because we can easily go into our own error in making it merely an intellectual exercise or feed off it to divert to the latest conspiracy theory or politics or whatever is trending. Prayer of course has it's own ways that it can deviate from scriptural standards; but from my experience it is the lack of prayer that seems to be a common denominator in many congregations. Yes; someone can try to use prayer as a means of spreading gossip or trying to get attention. It seems that too often there is a planned schedule for prayer and it is almost unheard of for it to extend any length of time beyond that planned timeslot even when nothing is pressing. Just to find one or two people who have an urge to pray before a service or for others when needs are expressed and can do it "on the fly" in my mind can literally mean the life or death of a local congregation. If we can't be as a weapon of warfare prepared at all times then we simply will in one way or another be compromised and heading for defeat in having any real impact on individuals or a local community.

    John ray,

Sorry, I did not catch this comment. I would like to say be very careful who you listen to, for the Kenites are still with us today.

They begin the sons of Cain, are a very smart bunch. Christ would tells us about them in St. John Ch. 8, how about Luke 11:48, read Amos 8:11.

I thought I'd clarify a couple things. I am only aware of one situation where I rebuked someone at least gave exhortation; it was a roommate I had for about 9 months and there were things he admitted himself that he was struggling with-in this case it was in regard to drinking and some offensive language which wasn't befitting him. In my life I have been rebuked; in the case of a Christian counselor it was appreciated as I knew he was working on my anger issues going through my divorce. Another individual was very harsh and I realized later stuff he was going through; but his comment on always trying to say something edifying will be something I'll keep in mind. I made a very hard decision not to attempt to meet up on my trip out of town a while back because of several other times he was very agitated; he still sends me Bible verses nonetheless.

In the case of my counselor; he had me memorize a verse in Psalms very similar to Proverbs 15:1. The Word should be our instruction manual; sadly many are starved for rhe Word of God today ( Amos 8:11). In my own situation I still have scars from the divorce and I certainly can relate to the stages of grief someone goes through in that situation. Compassion is something the Lord has given me and a more tender heart; since it is not a spiritual gift that I tend to excel in.

(Don't forge I mentioned encouragement also). Those who are in need for encouragement aren't going to be those in the limelight the vast majority of the time.

Thanks for your encouragement and responses...

Omniscience is one of God's immutable attributes, which is to say, all knowledge of all things is an inherent part of His character and being. Nothing is outside of God's sphere of knowledge. The word "omniscient" is defined as having infinite awareness, understanding and insight; it is universal and complete knowledge.

God's omniscience means that He can never learn anything new. Nothing can surprise Him or take Him unaware. He is never blind-sided! You will never hear God say, "I didn't see that coming!" or "Who would have thought?" A firm belief in God's omniscience gives the Christ-follower extraordinary peace, security, and comfort in every area of life.

    Amos 8:12

And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

    Job 2:2

And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

    2 Chronicles 16:9

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

God has knowledge of everything occurring at any given time. We ask, well why did He allow this and that to happen?!

He gifted us free will, to make decisions that glorify Him and not us. Glorify Jesus. Welcome the Holy Spirit to help us become more like Jesus.

We have technology to tell us daily what is happening all over the earth: weather, wars, economy, disasters, Everything.

As His children we ought to ask the Lord our questions and then leave it with Him. By reading the Bible, cover to cover, almost all of our questions will be answered. If you ask Him a question, be prepared to sit in silence before Him and, WAIT UPON THE LORD. Open up dialog with Him. Be willing to accept the no's with the yes's.

Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them..

I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel..

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection..

Sin brings death! Spiritual death! Being in the body of Christ is where every believing Christian needs too be at all times. When we fail of course the Lord forgives. When spiritual death happens to us because of sin, it might only come for a minute, after prayer and seeking forgiveness the Holy Spirit we once again take its place and forgives us!

This is the 5 G of God. It is sharper than a two edged sword, dividing the good from the Bad. Satan cannot know these things, He does not have the power to look into the soul, He judges things from the outside! This saving faith , given through the holy spirit is yours, produces streaks of power that enlightens the world, even saving some, who , may learn the truth! The love of God in Christ! This is the will of God for us and man kind! Go and teach all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

I think the Antichrist will try to fool people, that he has everybody's "best interests"

He'll pretend to represent everyone. He'll be keeping track of everything we read online, everything we type online, everything we order online (even food). Nothing is private anymore.

    Cookies are tracking everything.

Phone calls, texts, emails: no matter the time of day or night, are followed by TECH GIANTS. HiThey write the programs so they can do these things. Their only rewards are, they are ABLE to do these things. They do not care where all this is leading to.

Internet Devices can all be Tracked to where they are by GPS. Satellites in outer space can zoom into your location. There are so many satellites in earths atmosphere that they can barely launch space exploration vehicles anymore.

How do you think driverless cars are being driven? Our cars probably have barcodes all over the insides. They are flashing barcode images on our tv's so we can hold up our phones to the image; and it will transfer your money, to whatever you are buying.

If we think we are hiding our extreme porn habits, poking around into other peoples lives through internet, YOU ARE DECEiVED, already.

Even little children can do this; they all have their own cell phones!

There is no such thing as PRIVACY anymore. They can even monitor who is a Christian. That's why Jesus is COMING SOON for His Church! All over this globe we live on.

Global Warming is just a "keep them busy and focused on a LIE". After the Rapture, After the Tribulation, after JESUS completes ALL prophesy left to accomplish:

This Earth will be razed with fire and cleansed, down to the core (to destroy even the tunnels we digged).

Only Believing, Born Again believers, will see the new heavens and New Earth. If that is what you desire_you need to believe God's Word_get yourself in Jesus Christ__and hang on tight. There's no more time to "waffle around" with believing you can outsmart the Antichrist, or God.

Brother Richard, may CHRIST IN US grace us with HIS wisdom and HIS understanding.

If were are judged by Christ, sanctified by Christ, justified by Christ, cleansed by Christ, saved by Christ and our God is a consuming fire; therefore we have our part in the lake of fire or the fire of the Lord.

Being one with Christ we also become the fire of the Lord. Those in the second resurrection are going to be judge by fire (us). They will be resurrected in TORMENTS not having living water.

Zachariah 14:17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto (new) Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of host, even upon them SHALL BE NO RAIN (living water).

Amos 8:11 Behold the days comes, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of (natural) bread, nor a thirst for (natural) water, but of hearing the WORDS OF GOD (living bread and living water)

Sheri, the Spirit has graced you with his wisdom and understanding. Most don't understand that THE DAY OF THE LORD has been going on for 2000 years.

Amos 8:9 And it shall come to pass in THAT DAY, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in a clear day.

Matthew 27:45 And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned in darkness, and the MOON into blood, BEFORE the terrible DAY OF THE LORD come.

Psalm 89:36 It (his seed, Christ) shall be established for ever as the MOON, and as a faithful witness in heaven.

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is my FAITHFUL WITNESS......

John 19:34 .....and forthwith came there out blood and water.....

Zachariah 14:7 IT SHALL BE ONE DAY which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass at evening time it shall be light.

It still isn't light and 2000 years has already passed.

The Spirits grace continue upon you.

    Answers in the Bible

In this chapter we see Amos bringing the Word of God but the people had no appetite for it because of their apathy. In making application we see that we have the Word of God in our hands today, the Bible, yet we look for answers everywhere else except in its pages which contain all the answers to our lives. How about you? Do you see the Word of God for the answers in your life. Let us learn from our text today and the direction of Amos to see that the Bible holds all the answers to the questions we have in how to live our lives.

    Chris,

    Page 3

These are some very important subjects that you seem to be a bit unsure of. As I am sure you already are, we have to dig a little bit under the surface; that is where the hidden treasure is. If we do not understand what happened in the beginning, how will we understand what will happen in the end?

"And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man" ( Luke 17:26), also look at Isaiah 46:10, Amos 8:11, Matthew 24:37, 2 Timothy 2:15.

Since we have been discussing the first chapters of Genesis, I will leave you with this.

The sons of God are Angels, look at Job 1:6, 7. The fallen angels came down from heaven and mated SPECIFICALLY with the daughters of Adam, producing giants. The flood came not only to rid the earth of evil men, but to preserve the lineage from which Christ would come (due to the success of the fallen angels).

Satan was an angel. Eve was beguiled by Satan. The word "beguiled" means to be seduced (Strong's). What happened in the garden to Eve (and Adam) was the first attempt to blot out the seed line from which the Messiah would come, and was the same thing the fallen angels were guilty of during their second attempt. The punishment Eve (and the rest of womankind) would from that point forward endure had to do with BIRTH, look at Genesis 3:16; and the punishment Satan faced included a separation of his PROGENY from that of the woman ( Genesis 3:15).

The scripture Amos 8: 11 is surely prophetic, for in these times with the almost complete shutdown of houses of worship , fellowship among believers is essentially virtual and not in person. Hearing God's word has always been -by way of the ' spoken word'. Now for the near or foreseeable future , God's word may or will be by reading -for those who possess a Bible , or online ,or previous recorded sermons... but for most , it will be virtual , for the live spoken word cannot be duplicated. Who thought that it happen this way . The houses of worship have been shut by this pestilence - which in a strange way ....fulfills the Prophecy of Amos.
