Discuss Deuteronomy 19

    Good afternoon, Adam.

Romans 5:12 says Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

The fact is that we are all born with Adam's sin and hence at enmity with God. Our hearts are as Jeremiah 17:9 says "desperately wicked." No one does good ( Romans 3:10-12 and in Psalms); and we are estranged from the womb ( Psalm 58:3). So the first issue is the thought that anyone is "good" which inevitably comes from comparing ourselves to another "worse" person like Hitler (unless we are that bad ourselves and we can't appeal to anyone worse; in that case we probably wouldn't want to concern ourselves with doing good deeds. Our deeds also; BTW are evil; even our best deeds as "filthy rags". ( Isaiah 64:6). This "grace Gospel" as it is known is obviously taken from Romans as a primary source but reflects many scripture verses. Or as someone once said "a hundred percent sinner needs a hundred percent savior" (can't seem to find this entire phrase quoted by anyone).

Now death; of course in the law comes in two ways; MURDER or justifiable killing whether to exact a punishment "a life for a life" (part of Deuteronomy 19:21). It also is involved with the wars and conquests of Israel with the admittedly hard verses about exterminating entire peoples including women and children in certain circumstances. The understandable aspect of this is when the descendents of the Nephilim (or angels with women producing giant hybrid offspring) were exterminated; being an aberrant being without and eternal soul perhaps the proper interpretation of Isaiah 26:14. That is a deep study; but no doubt this is easier than explaining extermination of human beings. Those nations which were conquered had common practices of child sacrifice with idol worship; therefore it could have saved the children from a worse death. Genesis 15:16 shows how God waits until iniquity is full before utter destruction.

    Kinsman Redeemer.

    Part 10.

It is Jesus the Christ that is our Kinsman-Redeemer.

The kinsman Redeemer had two main functions, that of redemption of man, and the justice of avenging evil and sin against His people, Israel.

It is Him that came the 1st time to redeem the world with His blood, and it is Him that will come the 2nd time as the Avenger of blood to save Israel and destroy His enemies wherein the justice of avenging evil and sin is performed.

This is why it is so important that we understand that Jesus was the ultimate example of faith.

He did right what Adam did wrong.

He trusted God even though He would die.

He allowed Himself to become a man, after having spent eternity as God.

On the promise that God would resurrect Him, and restore Him to His state, that Christ would sit in God the Father's throne, until all was fulfilled; and Christ would come the 2nd time to redeem Israel, destroy his enemies and then will sit on the throne of David("And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David" Luke 1:30-32), a throne that He was ultimately meant to rule from (for thousand years until always completed and there is the new heaven and new earth Revelations 20:2-6), for a thousand years.

    Endnotes

    1. Deuteronomy 25:5-10; Ruth 3:9-12; Genesis 38:8.

    2. Numbers 35:12; Deuteronomy 19:6, 12; Joshua 20:3, 5, 9.

    3. HOLMAN BIBLE DICTIONARY, Trent C. Butler, Ph.D., Holman Bible Publishers, Nashville, TN, 1991, page 848.

    4. God in His wisdom had set up a system where if individuals had no income or food, they could survive in Israel by going through fields after they had been harvested the wheat, and salvage the reminiscence that were dropped. This was referred to as "gleaning a field" ( Lev. 23:22).

    5. Ruth 4:5-10.

    1Peter 2:19,21,

Good conscience, Christ suffered giving us example, trusting GOD not man.

Please refer back to why Jesus suffered = Matthew 12:14, John 7:1, Matthew 12:1-13, because he healed on the Sabbath?

John 7:7 "The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil" John 8:44, Matthew 22:29,

Jesus corrected & rebuked the leaders in the religious sects & ignored their contradictory "mandates" even washing of hands.

HE disobeyed those in Governmental authority, because they were corrupt. Matthew 27:12,13,14, John 19:11, obeying GOD ALMIGHTY.

If you're referring to Our GOD Blessed Country USA. This website is global. The USA did not get the religious freedom it has by obedience to oppressive Gov. Please read the US Declaration of Independence & refer back to another scripture, 1Peter 2:14, Our "public servants" have not punished evildoers, but have actually committed Treasonous acts, putting Citizens in danger. We have a Duty given by our GOD to uphold law, order, safety of our people & protecting our freedoms. As Established within that document. Proverbs 31:9,

If you haven't noticed the chaos in the world after the falsified Election of 2020, please look & understand we affect the World for good, when we are strong, stable & blessing & helping other nations.

Let's not forget all of the Old Testament either.

How would Jesus handle these things today? Remember John 2:15 "And when He had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money and overthrew the tables." & Luke 19,

Cali, Gov. Fobid singing in Church Fellowship, GOD says sing, Psalms 98:4, Psalms 33:3,

    Proverbs 22:28

Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

    Deuteronomy 27:17

Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen.

    Proverbs 23:10

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

    Deuteronomy 19:14

Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

Hi Denise. To your first question: Deuteronomy 19:14, "Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it."

You may need to give more information on your second question (unless someone here is aware of a verse). The only one that comes to mind is a very general command and is found in Leviticus 19:18, "Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD."

Hello James. Another perspective. God has always required 'life to be given for life'. This was true in His original Commandments to Israel ( Deuteronomy 19:21): if one wilfully took another's life, then the punishment was to be the death of the perpetrator. And so it was for the destroying the body parts of the innocent as well (v21). It may seem harsh or barbaric to do such things in response to such crimes, but in the Divine Judgement, if in a lawful legal system where witnesses to such crimes were present, then that punishment was to be carried out (not only as punishment to the guilty but that others might learn from this, v20). However, if the witnesses gave false evidence, then they suffered similar punishment as well, vv18,19.

Having said that & to answer your question: "How did the concept of sacrifice for atonement begin?", the rule of 'life for life' was always in God's Mind & issued as part of His Laws to Israel. So, when sin entered into man, every human who committed sin was under the penalty of death ( Genesis 2:16,17; Romans 6:23) - none of us can escape it. But here we have a problem: the death that God speaks about is more than what He required of man's justice system to mete out. In the human system, only the life of man could be exterminated, but in God's System, He can remove him physically as well as positionally. True, Adam & Eve died physically because they sinned by disobeying God, but if God was to prevent them & us from also being separated from Him (i.e. into the place reserved for the Devil & his angels), then there must be a judicial means for God to use to overcome that.

God instituted a sacrificial system for Israel, where a pure animal was sacrificed in substitute for the sinner. The sacrifice couldn't remove the sin but it looked forward when God's Own Lamb would be sent as the Sacrifice for not only Israel, but for all mankind. "Without shedding of blood is no remission" ( Hebrews 9:22): God's requirement for justice & atonement.

All these verses deal with tattletales, backbiters and busybodies

Hi Cary, at the personal response level, you're quite correct in saying that repaying evil for evil doesn't make one any better than the perpetrator. However, we also need to study the Scripture & context.

Jesus, in Matthew 5:38,39, was referring to the Old Testament commandments that God gave ( Exodus 21:24, Leviticus 24:20, Deuteronomy 19:21). These directions were given for the proper judicial outcomes when God's Laws were disobeyed. So if it was found (by confession, by clear evidence or by witnesses) that a murder had taken place, then it was the proper judgement to mete out similar punishment as the crime. And this applied to a whole variety of offences, but such judgement was in the domain of the judges.

What was happening amongst the Jews in Jesus' day, was that those Scriptures were being applied to personal vengeance & retribution. The classic case is found in John 8:3-11, with the woman being accused of adultery to which the law required death. We see three things here: it was the religious leaders that demanded & would oversee the stoning rather than her going through an official judicial process (The Jewish Sanhedrin or the Roman Govt, depending on the crime). The person who should have cast the first stone (a large stone to the head to kill or bring to near death the criminal, & then others with smaller stones casting them at the lifeless body) failed to come forward. Jesus Word brought conviction: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." Fortunately for the woman, the leaders & the people realized that they were sinners, as she was, & were not entitled to administer punishment. And since none accused her, the matter was dropped & didn't make it to the judiciary.

So the "eye for an eye" rule was not to be carried out by the people filled with anger, set upon vengeance, but from a legally constituted system (though they too could have erred in judgement). Likewise, we too, cannot repay evil with evil rather with good.

  • Chris - In Reply on Deuteronomy 19 - 4 years ago
Hi Richard, you've touched on a portion of Scripture that I often recall with heaviness, especially in light of our modern judicial system. What you read there in Deut 19, was a wonderful law & provision to all caught up in a crime. It appears to me as one that was very fair & just, given the lack of forensic & other means of crime investigation that was available to them. The fact that both wilful & accidental deaths were dealt with, is noteworthy. And the need for two witnesses, with the caveat that if any gave a false witness, they too would receive similar punishment, is something our present system could well learn from.

But to your matter: I'm not familiar with the usage of this verse amongst the JWs, but I can see where they & any other religious group, could use it for their wicked ends. Or, even take the RC ruling of anonymity between clergy & laity, how this has been abused where the rule overrides the sin/crime being committed. What can one say, except when seeing or hearing of such tragedies, one can only wonder as to the type of 'religion' practised by those perpetrators of crime, whether there is any guilt at all, or more likely, believing that neither man nor God has observed their wickedness or has an interest in it. And you're right, how can a child in that situation, even if old enough, ever bring out two or three witnesses; fear itself would compel a child to not speak up. The bottom line is that our justice system has so deteriorated over the decades, that it now does little more than give a 'slap on the wrist' & this only to indicate that they view the act committed as a crime & that both the criminal & the victim are to be treated equally!! I could go on & on with this, but it only brings on more despair.
  • Mishael - In Reply on Deuteronomy 19 - 4 years ago
It means that it takes 2 witnesses to accuse and 3 witnesses to convict.

In our society it is a punishable offense as soon as investigation is documented for a court proceeding. With JW's I don't know? They handle things amongst themselves. But I would hope someone at school would intercede for the child.
  • Richard Barrell on Deuteronomy 19 - 4 years ago
Hi, I'm wrestling somewhat with Deut 19 v 15 where the Word talks of two witnesses needed for a conviction of an evil act. It seems the JWs use this to protect some among their number who have been accused of child abuse. Obviously a child who has been abused would never have had a witness, let alone two, to present evidence against an evil person involved in such a crime. I'd be interested in your take on this verse please.

    Thank you

    Richard

SO the Babylon system, New testament is a product of Masonry. God's word and law never changes. A lot of you are deceived and worshipping a false idol without even realizing it because of your indoctrination. I recommend you take heed to the word of God, his original word that never changes and repent. Isaiah 14:12, Rev 22:16 the truth is in plain sight. But some will refute it because of pride.

    Mark,
John 5:31 and John 8:18 do not contradict each other. In 5:31, Jesus is saying that, according to Jewish law, a single witness (in this case, Himself) is insufficient to establish truth (see Numbers 35:30, and especially Deuteronomy 19:15; also 2 Corinthians 13:1). In 8:18, He states that not only He, but the Father also, bears witness of Him. Thus, his witness (which agrees with that of the Father) is TRUE.
