to Coral - it is confusing isn't it? Not just the question regarding the translation from Hebrew, but also that specific commandment. My take on it is they're both right, the KJV translation is reverentially accurate, not always perfectly literal but reverentially correct. The second part of your question, tough one, the answer can only be distilled from the entire text of the bible - any help?

Is it thou shall not kill or is it thou shall not murder. There is a very distinct difference. King James version says kill. Niv version says murder. Many people's lives were ended during the displacement of people occupying the land God had chosen for his people. Were they killed or murdered ?

I don't understand. How is it that everyone agrees that we should keep all the Commandments
and yet, make excuses, in my opinion, about the 7th day? "Remember the 7th day to keep it holy." On my calendar the 7th day is Saturday. Please explain how this one commandment is
broken? When were the generations given permission, by our Father in heaven, to change this
    commandment? Please help!

The Laws of God hold true to all generations ushering us into Grace and Mercy. Lord let me have nothing in my life lifted up as a god.
  • PETER on Exodus 20 - 8 years ago
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. I can not understand why anyone would do that, but think that some Christians do; and i think that they should be aware of the chance that they take. Ver 12 is also so important for the young people and anyone who wants to live long.

Sometimes we have to live with parents who are non believers so it makes this law challenging but honoring them does not mean we have to agree with them, it means honor their wishes and if you find you have broken this rule, repent.

No matter how educated and wise we get as we age, we should always respect and have patience with our aging parents.

My parents are gone ! To the best of my ability I believe that I honored my parents . Wether my or your parents were ugly and treated us shamefully : I believe that we are to honor our parents : Parents can sometimes be cruel There is possiblely something that is disturbing them that makes them the way they are. That our days may be long on this earth : honor to whom honor is due : And that includes parents !!! I believe that we as God's children that God will give us the ability to do so. Through the power of Holy Spirit.

Honor and respect your parents. Children that disrespect their parents develop a bad habit of disrespecting authority and disregarding sound advice. A child left alone is headed for destruction. As a public school teacher I see this play out constantly. You will have bad odds in life if you won't listen.

Revelation 22:14-15 Blessed are they that do his Commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Chapter two is magnifying glass on the sixth day of creation. It shows us Awesome God, who finished the creation week with the seventh day as memorial of creation, and of Himself as our God. He blessed it and sanctified it and maid it Holy. In Exodus 20:8 He told us to Remember to keep the seventh day Holy! And out of all commandments of God we forgot this one that He says to Remember!

Using Church or Religion as a whip, to guilt an individual or group of individuals, to serve the speakers or a specific group's personal agenda, is, to me, a form of taking the Almighty's name in vain.

It means, do not kill ANYTHING... Animals OR humans... We are all struggling souls have no idea of the misery torture we inflict by eating animals... Genesis 1:29-30 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of ALL the earth, and every tree,in that which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed to you it shall be for meat 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: And it was so...

Verse 4 clearly talks about graven images and i'm getting a picture of how God detests such with a passion. Read on its own or in conjunction with other scriptures on graven images, it cannot escape one's notice that they are expressly forbiden. God is a jealous God. So where do catholics get their authority to form graven images and shamelessly place them conspicuously in their places of worship with impunity? Definitely not the bible!

I understand it to include any image of anything in heaven, on earth and inder the earth - this includes pictures, videos, TV, YouTube, Facebook and such things.
  • Chinonso on Exodus 20 - 9 years ago
My concern lies within Exodus 20:4 5. The Bible says: "Thou shall not make thyself any graven image, of any likeness of anything in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth." Verse 5 says, "Thou shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them for I the Lord is a jealous God... "I am a Core Catholic!" Then, my concern relies on whether the "Images Chaplets" and other 'Sacramentals' used by the Catholic Church Worldwide violates this particular Law since they only make use of them bow down to them in acknowledgment of God in Heaven, and not for any other god on earth or anywhere else. In fact, I have heard so many Christians of other faiths like: The Lords Chosen, RCC, Assemblies of God Church etc criticising Catholic Church and their Doctrines. Some even go a long mile condemning them aptly reckoning it as an "Occultic Church." But still, the same people, 'll take pictures, enlarged images and keep for themselves, make larges format prints and place in their Churches even at their altars without using them in God's glory. So who is doing the right thing?
