This is what I was taught: that these islands are actually other continents bordered by water (seas or oceans). Presumably Gentile. No where near the Mideast regions.
The Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea are mentioned a number of times in both the Old and New Testaments. Each the the three bodies of water serves as geographical boundary markers in Numbers 34:1-12.

If you think about the times Our Lord is speaking of there is no way there would be aircraft or aircraft carrying ships. however there possibly would be catapults slinging great rocks at them , In those days boats would have been wooden , surely if he says chariots and horses why do we have to interpret it as anyhting different!
In verse 9, the word engines is used. Can you tell me the meaning? I didn't think that word-engine-was used or known about at that time? But with our GOD, nothing is impossible!!
Verse 15, it is possible that the isles spoken of here are navy air craft carriers or destroyers. When guns are fired on a ship there is a shaking of the ship. Verse 16 could be the ship is attacked and the naval officers, called princes, take off their embroidered jackets and put on lifejackets. They are down from their throne because the ship is at that point damaged and useless because it is sinking. Verse 19, Aircraft carriers are called floating cities because they can have 5000 or more people onboard. Verse 18, When an aircraft carrier is sunk the supporting ships around it lose air support from the jets that do not have time to deploy off the runway.
Verse 10, walls shaking because of the NOISE of horsemen. Horsemen are symbolic of jet pilots. When a jet flies low over rooftops the concussion of the sound waves do literally shake the walls of houses like an earthquake.
