Verse 1: This verse shows that originally the earth was full of people who spoke only one language.

Mr. Smith; Consider what the LORD said, with the view that they had raised up a city and a tower of rebellion against the heavens. Read Psalm 2 (for example), and think of that unrestrained "imagination" as that they thought to cast God out from the world and all influence upon the hearts and minds of men; like they do still to this day. The evil seed planted in men's souls, is coming to the full.

MrSmith,2Cor.10:5"Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God,and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ"I'm not talking about inventions or getting out of a jam.Gen.6;5,Gen.8;21,Deut.2;19,Luke1;51,etc.
The Holy Spirit helps with prayer,Scripture teaches us to rely on Him,not our own understanding.Proverb 3;5

v 6, From God's mouth to our ears. NOTHING will be restrained (or nothing will be impossible) from them (to them) which they have IMAGINED to do. The power of the human imagination is infinite. God made us after his likeness, a creator. Every invention of man started in the imagination. Whatever situation we're facing we can imagine our way out of it.

Cheryl - Gen. 10:31 (not 34) and Ch.11:1; the Bible isn't written 'chronologically' - in the exact order things happened. And that's God's intention: so we would STUDY to shew ourselves approved, 2 Tim. 2:15; v. 23.
  • Irene123 on Genesis 11 - 8 years ago
V.10 - It's interesting only Arphaxad is mentioned; Shem had several sons.
  • Irene123 on Genesis 11 - 8 years ago
V.4 - " ..... lest we be scattered upon the whole face of the earth". And that's exactly how God punished them. Man still today thinks he can out maneuver God.
  • Irene123 on Genesis 11 - 8 years ago
" ..... people were too fast .... "; honestly! don't you know God is - omnipotent and omniscient? God CONTROLS the population; it does NOT get out of His control. My God (Jesus) is somewhat bigger and more powerful and smarter than other's 'gods' on here.

Cheryl, the original text did not have chapters and verses; they were added later to make the Scriptures easier to reference for the Bible scholar. Because it was so popular, it became the regular way to copy the Bible. We should read it in the whole context it was first written. This should help answer your question. Also, it isn't always exactly chronologically written; but according to subject.

Hi Leah. They were constructing a city and a tower, for rebellion. It is almost extinct from knowledge or understanding today, and never taught, about that city,Babel, and what terrible ruin it effected on men,to make them heathen;something so evil and perverted and blasphemous, that couldn't be driven out of their hearts, even by the confounding of the languages, and scattering over all the earth.
  • MIchael C. on Revelation 17 - 9 years ago
In Genesis 11:1-9 is the recorded beginnings of that spirit of "The Great Whore" which reigns over the kings of the earth: because the confounding of the languages, and scattering of them to every corner of the world, did not take that heathen rebellion and antichrist spirit out of their hearts. The hypocrites and apostates have always been those who taken their portion on the back of the beast.
  • Michael C. on Revelation 17 - 9 years ago
In Genesis 11:1-9 we have the nativity of that "Great Whore" spirit, ever since in the world. When the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that they were building, He said, "The people are one, and have all one language, and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be restrained from them of all that they have imagined to do?" So their imagination today is to casting off all restraint.

Valerie, keep asking the Father for a clean heart, faith and wisdom and the LORD will give you understanding beyond your own comprehension as you continue studying His Word. Anyone who asks in sincerity will receive. May God bless you with a pure heart abounding in charity and fill you with His Holy Spirit! In Christ Jesus my Lord and Saviour I pray. Amen. Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you seek, and ye shall find knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth and he that seeketh findeth and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Okay so I have been using the years according to genesis geneologies and found that Noah was alive when Abram was born 193 years after the great flood for at least 57 years. That means Abram possibly met his great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather Noah.

There are great spiritual truths to learn from this chapter : 1.The power of imagination, which speaks of creativity 2. The power of uniting a common agreement and belief. These show the explosive ability of the image of God in man on earth, that God was very concern, so He caused confusion among their communication, which affected their imagination and unity. Mankind was placed to govern the earth Gen 1:26-28 , but sin has corrupted his God given purpose that is why Jesus came to redeem mankind.

  • Gary Mattis on Genesis 11 - 10 years ago
Genesis Chapter 11 7 uses the word US again for God , let US go down ! , The Messiah and Father are already together here as a unity exactly like they are in chapter 1 and 2 of Genesis.

the tower of babel is the pyramids. in my opinion...from the text it says they began to build a tower that reaches unto heaven....and in verse 8, it says they were scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.....AND THEY LEFT OFF TO BUILD THE CITY. Although God did change their language, and scattered them, they still had the idea......that is why their are pyramids all ver the earth........

Hello Bremmer Yes, from Adam to the tower of Babel they spoke one language, Genesis 11 6. You are talking about the descendants of Noah s son Shem, Genesis 11 11 thru 18. This only backs up the scriptures saying that all life was destroyed except for the 8 souls in the Ark along with the animals that God spared. According to the scripture once again the Earth was populated by Noah and his sons there was no other people who survived after the flood, but Noah s family. Genesis 9 19 These are the three sons of Noah and of them was the whole earth overspread . Also in Genesis Chapter 11 is talking about the tower of Babel. In short, if I can say it like this, when they left the Ark they did not do what God told them to. They were to scatter over the whole Earth and populate it. However, what they did instead was pick a spot and decided to build a tower to heaven. God seeing this came confused their language and scattered them all over the Earth each according to the many languages that they were now speaking. The land was divided to each clan that spoke the same language.
