    Compare America to Sodom, Gomorrah, and other cities destroyed. It hasn’t been here three hundred years yet, but they already welcomes homosexuality, the government, massacred the first race to steal the land from them, broke the British treaty to steal their sacred lands, as well as the cemeteries of their ancestors. War of 1812, America was the first to break treaty, burning, looting, raping, etc... (Just like Sherman through Atlanta, but Canada wasn't in the war at that time. More and more, God is eliminated from the entire country, which leads to more deception and lack of morals to grow, spreading the influence of fornication, divorces without sexual immortality, etc... Americans treated slaves the worst out of recorded history, but realized, they would make more money from 600 freed slaves, versus 1 plantation owner. Hummmm- makes me think the Master of Deceit maybe losing his touch.

    Mattie & Martha You Stated why a pillar of salt? Well the bible don't state why salt but she turned into a pillar of salt due to Disobeying the word of the LORD. The Hebrew means that "she kept looking back steadily, wistfully, and with desires; her heart was in Sodom. Lots Wife was clinging to her past she was unwilling to turn completely away.
  • Martha Prince on Genesis 19 - 11 years ago
    You are referring to Genesis 19:26 when Lots wife looked back at Sodom while God was destroying the city. Verse 17 says And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

    I am not aware of any scripture that explains why God chose to turn her into a pillar of salt.
  • Mattie on Genesis 19:26 - 11 years ago
    I think it is being used to make a illustration of something, but what could it be. Look at Jesus telling his follower upon this Rock I will build my church. He used Rock several times in the bible to make a statement, why a pillar of salt?

    An awesome word, a statement and a command at the same time.
    Some people want to believe that homosexuality wasn't the reason God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, but those people need to read God’s first instructions in Leviticus about man laying with man; those men were condemned to death. God made woman for man and he gave them the instruction to procreate and replenish the earth, and two men cannot do that together. We're all sinners, and we all sin by thoughts and deed each day, and just like homosexuals have lost their way, so have the rest of us. God loves us all, and we are not to judge each other, but the wages of all our sins is death. We can kill our dreams or our perfect future just by doing the wrong things (sinning); and none of us is exempt from the wages of sin. Thanks and sorry for the misspelled words. Have a blessed day in the Lord.

    From here on Homosexuals are referred to as Sodomites in the Bible. 1 Kings 15-12, 1 Kings 22-46, 1 Kings 14.24, 1 Kings 23-7, Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Romans 1:23-27, And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. The words knew and know many times in the Bible Mean to have sex with. And Adam knew his wife and she conceived and Bare a son. The Men in this City were so given over to Homosexuality that they refused two Virgin Women. They wanted to know or Have sex with the Men that were in Lot’s House. They were so possessed with Homosexuality that even after the angels smote them blind they wearied themselves trying to find the door. It's referred to as an abomination. God commanded the Kings to put the Sodomites out of the land. If a man should lie with a man after the manner of a women they shall both be put to death (Leviticus). If God doesn't change, he still feels the same about this today. I wouldn't condone or look to find scriptures to condone something God hates so much. It is changing the truth of God into a lie and worshiping the creature and not the Creator. We are commanded to Mortify or (Kill) the lust of the flesh and the affections thereof. God is coming back for a bride that is pure white. Not a filthy lustful harlot stained with sin. God saves us from our sins not in them. Galatians 6- Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

    It's funny how some people think that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of homosexuality. They need to read this Bible. NOWHERE is it interpreted that way.

    What I learnt from this verse is that there are some things in our life that we should let go and totally wipe out of our memory. No matter how expensive they seem or how hard we've laboured for them. If we suddenly loose them, we should still praise God and forget about them all, knowing that we are serving Jehovah Jireh (the God that provide). We should move ahead in God’s new direction. As Christians, we should trust in God for greater life ahead of us. Lot’s wife was filled with the thought of what she was losing in Sodom, so she became a pillar of salt. Apart from the fact that salt is used for preservation. We should also know that a salty land is good for nothing, it's a waste land. A salty land can neither be use for farming nor for building. That is to say that anytime we concentrate on what we've lost in our old life we become unproductive in our present life.

    In Chapters 18 and 19, God is represented as an investigating magistrate responding to a complaint ("outcry") from mankind, rather than as an omniscient being acting of his own volition. He listens to and is persuaded by a plea in mitigation from Abraham. The initial judgment against Sodom is not absolute - it becomes absolute only when the men of Sodom attempt to associate the Being of God with their sexual practices through sexual communion with the angels of God. Recurrent symbols: the door of Abraham's tent, the gate of the city of Sodom, the door of Lot's house, the angels of God, are fraught with meaning. The "blindness" afflicted upon the men of Sodom has implications for our own age. However I remain puzzled by the incest of Lot. There is something we have missed there, yet to be uncovered in the commentaries.
  • Isaiah on Genesis 19:5 - 12 years ago
    If all the people of Sodom and Gomorrah wanted was for Lot to reveal the identity of the strangers, he wouldn't have offered his virgin daughters instead of the strangers. They actually wanted to have sexual intercourse with the strangers. And they were destroyed because of their homosexuality.
  • Robert on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    @Jam,
    Once you should try a bible with the NIV, NLT, NASB translations to sometimes better understand the KJB scriptures. Lot’s daughters were not married yet they were promised to these young men so he called them son-in-laws so yes they were still virgins until they had laid with Lot.
  • Clint on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    @Lak,
    The daughters had just seen their world destroyed and assumed they were last remaining people on earth. That’s why they took upon themselves to do what they did.
  • André on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    @LAK,
    In our time yes, there is incest.
    But not in theirs, because the commandment banning incest came only very much later in Leviticus 18:
    ‘’ 6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.
    7 The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.’’
    And without the above law, we cannot talk of any incest in this particular case.
    God bless you.
  • LAK on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    Doesn't anyone question the incest ????

  • Ken Harris on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    I too have had a struggle with this. i believe it's because we have been taught wrong. Abraham had two wives. Jacob had four. and on and on. i think the bible teaches that when a man takes a wife, she has to be a virgin; Remember there was no ceremony by a pastor given back then. The daughter was betrothed or given to the man by the parents. There is not enough room here to fully explain. but if you want to know more e mail me. In His Service...Ken

    I am completely confused about Genesis Chapter 19.I don't understand where Lot had sex with both of his virgin daughters and the way it is written it doesn't seem to condemn him for it.Was this OK then? Someone please explain in simple terms so I can understand. Our pastor preached on this tonight and when he said Lot had sex with both of his daughters I about fell out of my chair.
  • Pancho on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    My understanding is that the Hebrew word for "salt" can also translate as "vapor," which made me suspect that "Lot's wife" was vaporized by the holocaust. The destruction of that area was no small thing - it seems to have been equal to an atomic blast, which is why Lot and his family were told to get out "lest you be consumed." They weren't told, "You might get burned" or "You might get blown up." No, the danger was that they would be consumed ... and Lot's wife apparently was....
  • Ray on Genesis 19 - 12 years ago
    It is very obvious why Sodom was destroyed, as it was spelled out in concise language in Ezekiel.
    "the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness"
    Ezekiel 16:49
    Taking any other proposed or assumed reason for the destruction of Sodom would contradict the Bible itself.

    I am confused, Lot says his two daughters are virgins in verse 8, but by verse 14, he has sons-in-laws?
  • Timothy Wayne George on Genesis 19 - 13 years ago
    Lot's wife turned into salt because she did not follow the command the angels gave which was not to look back. We are warned not to look back, but to follow Jesus until he comes for us. Also Jesus told us to remember Lot's wife. Lot was saved because he obeyed, and his wife was left behind because she did not have faith in God.In order to please God we must believe his word and obey it.

    This verse in the bible leaves me to question not so much is the WORD of God is true and fact, but more so of the interpretation of this verse. I say the same that in the scriptures salt has been used as a seasoning and preservation. So, how is it that in this verse that Lot's wife turned into a physcial pillar of salt? Or is that scripture meant in different translations that Lot's wife because of her looking back into the city of Sodom that she was preserved in her memory of what she was missing or loosing? I believe something happened to Lot's wife BUT did she actually turned into a HARD CONCRETE PILLAR STATUE or was she perserved as salt in her mind that she was consumed and turned back to look upon what she was going to miss as she departed the city of Sodom?
  • JR on Genesis 19 - 13 years ago
    The men of Sodom did not likely realize that these
    men were in fact angels. Its not clear if Lot knew at the time they arrived, either. Though obviously when they revealed their purpose to him, he would realize they were angels. The fact that Lot offered his daughters is reprehensible, but perhaps he knew these wicked men were not interested in women. The fact that they are described later as married, could simply be that they were betrothed and thus considered married. AS they still lived in the house with him, this seems likely. It could also be that they were in fact already married, but still virgins because their husbands were homosexual. The fact that they lay with their own father later, shows the moral degredation of living in such an evil place. As to the comment about Lots wife, the Bible is NEVER contradictory. It is divinely inspired word of GOD. Sometimes things get muddled in the translation, which is why its important to look at the original Hebrew and Greek text to get a better understanding of what is being said. Salt is frequently used in the bible to render ground unfruitful. Luke 14:34 Salt [is] good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

    JimeeB- not quite sure how much more detail your looking for as to why Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. I think its pretty clear....

    Would like to omit previous conparison between Lot and his uncle both being liers. Sarah was his half sister. So I guess he was not a lier, just a coward.
  • Cecil on Genesis 19 - 13 years ago
    19:8 Lot offers his 2 daughters which have not known man. 19:14 Lot spake unto his sons-in-law, which married his daughters. Either Lot was a lier like his uncle or his daughters were married and never had sex. If so, I am surprized they did not get their husbands drunk with wine and lay with them.
  • JimeeB on Genesis 19 - 13 years ago
    For lot to offer up his daughters to the people is to me incomprehensible , no matter what the reason.
    That being said for his daughters to lay with him is also incomprehensible. As for the details of why Sodom and Gomorrah where destroyed perhaps the New Testament will shed light on this or perhaps it is just not of great significance.
