The rebellion sin of man being so greivious could only be satisfied by God himself providing the sacrifice
  • Adam Riser on Genesis 22 - 10 years ago
Fascinating how one man s obedience affects an untold number of generations after him
  • BSP on Genesis 22:9 - 10 years ago
This verse shows Isaac's willing to do God's will. Isaac was a grown man at this time and he willingly let himself become a sacrifice. This shows tremendous faith and trust in his father and in Jehovah God.

HEB.11-NOW FAITH IS THE SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN; ABRAHAM WAS TRULY A MAN OF FAITH-GEN.22:5- HE HAD FAITH TO BELIEVE THAT THEY WERE COMING BACK TO THE MEN HE HAD LEFT.
  • Ahmad on Genesis 22:2 - 11 years ago
Isaac was never ever at any point Abraham's only son. His only son could be only Ishmael because Ishmael was born when Abraham was around 86 and Isaac was born when he was 99. This name Isaac has been added in the original text.

  • Rubystars on Genesis 22 - 11 years ago
This is a prediction of the crucifixion of Christ because Jesus was of Abraham's seed and through Him the whole world was blessed by an opportunity for salvation. Also the Jewish people in general have brought many blessings to this world and so that too is part of the meaning.
  • Derrick Times on Genesis 22:14 - 11 years ago
They have replaced the true name, because salvation can only be gained through his holy name

In simplicity God demands the most treasured thing we have. To Abraham it was his son. His attention and everything centered on him. The fascinating thing was that he was prepared to let it go and cling to God rather than clinging to Isaac and let God go. God does not demand our excesses, he demands our last. In the temple, during offering Jesus said the widow who gave two pence gave more than all. The widow that fed Elijah gave her all to die. Are we Christians of this age prepared to let go of what we treasure most and cling to him?

The beauty of this is the image and parallel between Abraham taking is son along with him for three days, how he would have longed/pained in his heart, the total silence from God after first command to sacrifice, this signifies the travel to Mount of olives by Jesus and all night in Prayer with blood as sweat (to become something accursed is really hard for a holy God, he had to become accursed as he began to bear our sins) = First trip with the "the young men, asses and carrying the wood for sacrifice, travel to place of sacrifice, the painful three days journey by Abraham". When reaching and starting on their own with wood on Isaac's shoulder = Jesus carrying the wood of the cross up to Golgotha, the mount Calvary. When Abraham bound up Isaac = Jesus being nailed on the cross for our iniquities, the knife that was ready plunge (Isaac would have cried "father...father") = "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachathani", the ram that was caught in the thicket behind and sacrificed in place of Isaac = Jesus (God the father not withholding His only begotten Son). John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life". Praise be to God, He sacrificed His Son for me (us) a wretched sinner. Glory to your Name, Abba Father.

Abraham's action taught me to trust God always, for he always fulfils all his promises.

I have to admit I am a beginner in reading the bible so I still have some spiritual work that needs to be done within me... I was sitting on the edge of my seat reading in almost awe to why would God have Abraham slay his son but he didn't and as I read along I get a bit more of an understanding and also in reading everyone else’s comments I am growing more understanding.
  • Davis on Genesis 22:1 - 12 years ago
God knew what Abraham would do, he wanted Abraham to know where He stood himself. The bible says that we are so compassed about with a great cloud of witnesses. Abraham is one of these witnesses,so that we would know the power of God.

Abraham never saw Isaac dead in his mind or imagination. Verses5 and 6 show clearly what was in Abraham's heart, as Matthew12 :34 says "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks". He has experienced God's blessings, goodness and faithfulness for years, therefore he could not doubt God's word or promises regarding Isaac. Abraham did not rely on or fix his eyes on his current situation but knew that he has a covenant with a faithful and loving God. God is a Good and loving God, we should always expect good from Him, regardless of the circumstances.

In Mathew 1:1 Jesus Christ is son of David, son of Abraham. He was made seed of David according to the flesh ( Romans 1:4). He, as seed of Abraham was promised to possess the gates of his enemies. In Abraham's seed all the nations of the earth be blessed ( Genesis 22:17-18). In Mathew 1:18) He is Child of the Holy Ghost. He came down from heaven ( John 3: 13). This Child of the Holy Ghost was the word made flesh, the only begotten of the Father ( John 1:14). The Holy Ghost is the Father. The Holy Ghost and the Father are the self same person. God is a Spirit ( John 4:24) and you must be born of water the Spirit to see the kingdom of God ( John 3:5). God is the Father and He is the Holy Ghost. God was manifest in the flesh ( 1Timothy 3:16) For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham ( Hebrews 1:16). God was manifested in the flesh make atonement for sin and to purchase His church by His own blood ( Acts 20: 28). The Shekinah glory that was in that once filled the temple in Jerusalem took a body of flesh. He became God's Choosen Place of Worship, God's Temple that He choose to put His name, the perfect realisation ofthe old testament temple (Deutromy12:5-11). Jesus was God's temple and the Church is the temple of his body ( John 2:19; Ephesians 5:30; 2:21- 22). The church of Christ, the bride is the mouthpiece of the Holy Ghost for the commission was its not ye that speak but the Holy Ghost ( Mark 13:11) and again what Holy Ghost speaks the true church speaks the same ( Revelation 22:17), for He that is Joined unto the Lord is one Spirit ( 1Corinthians 6:16). Now the Spirit of the Lord that was on Jesus is in His church even as He promised: as for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD, My spirit that is upon thee and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out the mouth of thy Seed's seed, from henceforth and forever( Isaiah 59:21). The witness of the Apostles and prophets in the Bible is the witness of the Holy Ghost, for they were sent by the Holy Ghost ( Acts 13:4) and they preached by the Holy Ghost ( Galatians 1 :11-12). For the church to receive the blessing of Abraham the must stay exacty with the original gospel as Spoken by the Holy Ghost through His apotles
  • Timothy Wayne George on Genesis 22 - 12 years ago
God tested Abraham not because he did not know already the love in Abraham's heart, but rather for Abraham to know the love in his heart for Jehovah.
Isaac is the only son, because he is the son of the promise to Sarah. This is the same promise that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ when we place our faith in him we are sons of God. Abraham is called the father of faith because of this great act of faith. We too are descendants of Abraham because of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are heirs to the promises.

This was a way for Abraham to demonstrate his faith in God. God had promised him a son, Isaac, who would be the one whom would perpetuate the blessings mentioned in this chapter. In this sense, Isaac is Abraham's only son, though Ishmael was also alive and would be blessed.
Anyway, Abraham's faith in God was strong enough that he believed, and knew, that God could raise Isaac from the dead and fulfill His promises to Abraham.

And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, - Lets not have this discussion any further - Lets move on - GOD spoke through angels - We'll discuss later how GOD ate with persons and they lived in a later chapter. - But for now GOD utilized ANGELS up to this point.
  • Archer on Genesis 22:2 - 13 years ago
Isaac, thine ONLY son?!!! Wasn't Ishmael still alive?!!
  • Ddd on Genesis 22:14 - 14 years ago
Genesis 22:14 "And Abraham called the place Jehovah - jireh"

Why do so many bible translations, this one included remove the name Jehovah and replace it with something else. I wonder if it's to lessen the fact that God's real name is Jehovah, or Yahweh
  • Still searching on Genesis 22:1 - 14 years ago
Why did God need to tempt or test Abraham? If God is omniscient, he new exactly what Abraham would do.
