From what I learned, the books of the Bible had to coincide with the other books printed.
There are at least four 'different' men in the Bible named Enoch ( Genesis 4:17; 5:18; 25:4; 46:9). We should note that, in Genesis 25:4 and Genesis 46:9, the NIV gives the name "Hanok," while some other translations, such as the Darby translation, give the name "Enoch" instead. In both verses, the name "Hanok" is from the same Hebrew word translated "Enoch" in Genesis 4:17 and Genesis 5:18. Other translations say "Hanoch" or "Henoch." The only difference is one of English spelling.
Hebrews 11:5 gives a little more detail: "By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: 'He could not be found, because God had taken him away.' For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God." This being "taken away" is what Enoch is most famous for. Only two people in the Bible are said to have been chosen by God to escape death, Enoch and Elijah. Enoch appears to have been given this privilege due to being a man who walked faithfully with God ( Genesis 5:24) and pleased God ( Hebrews 11:5).
For what purpose was Enoch taken away? The Bible does not specifically say. The most common assumption is so that he could serve as one of the two witnesses, alongside Elijah, in the end times. Jude 14.
Praise the LORD for all on this forum. It is great to read of all the comments and different view points and the general discussions. This particular chapter brings to mind of our own peculiar circumstances now in 2022. No matter what we are going through, the LORD knows who each and every one of us are in HIM.
When we come out of it, as the children of Israel did come out of Egypt, we will be numerous and "spiritually" wealthy in then LORD JESUS CHRIST. I am encouraged to watch my LORD work on our behalf, as we carry out HIS commission. Matthew 28: 18-20; John 15:7,8; 1 John 5:14

Job was the 3rd son Issachar ( Genesis 46:13) he would of gone down to Egypt with his father. Issachar was 40 at "the going down to Egypt" Job would have been about 20 at that time (1706 bc). We are told he lived 140 years after his double blessing Gen. 42:10. If the double blessing included length of years then his age would have been 70 + 140 = 210 (3 70's of years). His lifetime would be 1726 to1516 BC. According to this, he was born the year after Joseph was sold, and died 119 years after the death of Joseph (in 1635 BC). When Joseph died, Job was 91. If his double blessing did include length of years (little doubt that they did) then his affliction took place 21 years previously, when he was 70. When Job died (1516) Moses was 55 and had been in Midian 15 years, 25 years before the Exodus. This would account for Job being a worshiper of GOD of Abraham, and explains how Moses could have been the author of the book, and perhaps an eye and ear witness of the events it records in Midian. Scholars have no other knowledge than this but we know for sure it was only given to us through the inspiration of GOD.
Actual events not some parable: Job was the 3rd son Issachar ( Genesis 46:13) he would of gone down to Egypt with his father. Issachar was 40 at "the going down to Egypt" Job would have been about 20 at that time (1706 bc). We are told he lived 140 years after his double blessing 42:10. This would account for Job being a worshiper of GOD of Abraham, and explains how Moses could have been the author of the book, and perhaps an eye and ear witness of the events it records in Midian. Time of afflictions was very quick and happened in days. The assault began Gen. 2:7 (1656 BC). The so called 3 friends were descendants of Esau; therefore contemporaries. They spoke for 40 chapters before GOD had enough and told Job to get up and quit listening to them. They accused Job of being a sinner when Job knew he did not.
Satan allowed to test Job was on earth de-facto meaning Satan was allowed to be here in his super natural state. Satan came to and fro from earth to heaven until CHRIST ordered him to get behind HIM and has been held there by Michael ever sense.
Genesis 1:28, other translations say "to fill" or "make full" the earth, replacing "replinish" , it would be interesting to do original text reasearch on the word.
Genesis 2:16,17,
If you look at Genesis 5:1-2, it can change the perspective, to who exactly the name Adam, is referring to. It's similar to referencing "man or mankind, man made" the difference seems to be clarified more when it says "the woman " Genesis 3, if we look however as Genesis 2, being in chronological order, then the woman arrives Genesis 2:18,19,21,22, after. However Genesis 3:1-3, shows she was very aware of the 'law' 2Corinthians 11:3, 1Timothy 2:13-15,
Genesis 2:23, He 1st named her ' woman ' interestingly Jacob also seems to do the same when GOD changed his name to Israel he continues to be referred to as Jacob, also. Genesis 32:28, Genesis 35:10, Genesis 46:2,5,
It doesn't say their children would be a punishment, Genesis 3:16, pregnancy & childbirth is difficult, painful, with distress. Woman also have hormons that magnify crying 'sorrow'. Explaining the curse also. Why, seems to be explained in Gen. 3. Revelation 12:2, John 16:21,
Genesis 3:7, fig leaves, will decompose & provide no warmth, It's a temporary, hasty, bad choice. Genesis 3:21, compassion, provision, love, mercy, knowledge, wisdom & protection, is why GOD made coats of skin for them. Remember they were no longer allowed in the protected environment of the special garden. Genesis 3:23-24, Ephesians 2:4,
"how, did GOD make skins from animals for them & why" It appears to be the 1st animal sacrifice to cover "mans sins".

Genesis 33:13-17, it says after they met Esau, they built a house & booths for cattle it doesn't say exactly how long they were there. It appears they may have left when Joseph was about 6 yrs. old because Genesis 31:41, But it was before Joseph was 17, Dinah seems to be older sister, they then pitched a tent._ Genesis 33:18-20 The only accounts of age we're given is Joseph was born & Genesis 30:25, Genesis 37:1-2, yet Joseph went to find his brethren in (Shechem) so was this timing, a historical account putting both situations about the same time? Genesis 37:11-14, because later Israel/Jacob tells Joseph about his mother's death & burial, that happened on Journey Genesis 35:1, Genesis 35:15-20, Genesis 35:27-29, Genesis 48:1-7, Genesis 45:25, Genesis 46:6,
Jacob and family journey to Egypt, stopping along the way at Beer-Sheba (south Canaan in the desert area of the Negev, I believed) to offer a sacrifice to God. Jacob was thankful for much. Joseph was alive, all of is sons were safe, having returned from Egypt, they were welcomed to arrive in Egypt, they would receive what they needed in the famine. God appears to Jacob and speaks to Him words of assurance.
Jacob and Joseph meet. They held onto each other a long time-20+ years worth of a hug!
Judah and Joseph lead the group to Goshen near Avaris (a Hyksos city). They will settle here and shepherd their flocks. I don't know why shepherds were looked down upon by the Egyptians. I know that later, the Pharisees looked down on the shepherds, too. Perhaps saying they were shepherds would keep Egyptians away from their settlement and prevent much intermingling of cultures (for a while). Maybe it would keep the Israelites from being put into the army or other position of the government. The Goshen area was a very fertile area as it accumulated silt from the Nile as the river branched out into a delta. It was in the eastern side of the delta region, closer to Canaan than any other area.
They were strategically placed by God to be able to flee Egypt in the Exodus hundreds of years later.
Good, you're at the right site. Start reading the WORD written inside by clicking the Books, I like Luke when I started that was great to show me as new study who Christ Jesus was, is & is to come. Hover over the scripture here, should bring you straight to it.

[Note this scripture chapter 44, Genesis, if you noticed we skipped Genesis 38, because it jumps from Joseph to Judah. Now if you read Genesis 38:1-30, you can understand a few things on deeper level = Judah maybe knows painful loss of children at this point in his life & even the difference of love towards children of his "loved wife". Next very importance of Judah's sacrifice for others, resemblance of Jesus sacrifice being beloved Son of GOD. Refresh their minds on who these people were in the last chapter and what happened as a result of what they did... You know at the Bar B Que last summer when your 1st cousin hit on your 2nd cousin and her big brother almost started a fight about it? Well that's what we had here...Except her brothers talked his family into becoming one like them by being circumcised..then they killed all the males.
Paul, begin at v.19 and count: The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife Joseph, and Benjamin. That's 2. Verse 20, Joseph had 2 sons. 2 2 4. Verse 21, Benjamin had 10 sons. 10 4 14 Verse 22, These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen. Fourteen is how many souls came out of Rachel's union with Jacob. Her 2 sons and their 12 sons. 14.
Genesis 46:21 says there were 10 sons of Rachel that were 14. 14 what? 14 years old? Giving birth to 10 sons that are 14 years old is impossible. Each pregnancy takes 9 months!
Verse 34- prejudice is an imperfect human trait and can take many forms. We must guard against showing personality because of any external circumstances of a person.
When one comes across a verse, verses that use the terms 'cattle' and 'sheep' seemingly interchangeably - that is exactly what is being done. In the O.T. cattle, sheep, goats, asses, etc., were in general called - cattle. It's God's word; take it up with Him.
Roy, I guess it would be pretty boring for you and your "Bible Study" group to have your families' named one by one, as part of the Registry of the Saved! It is offensive to everyone who loves the Lord, and reverences His word, when someone speaks so glibly and with common terms about Scripture! "All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, . . ."
It is good history however, kind of a boring read. I am teaching Genesis in our Bible Study and I need to keep people awake while reading all the names.
Sandra, good question. It is a little confusing from Joseph 's conversation with his brothers and their conversation with Pharoah what he was asking them to say to Pharoah and what they said to Pharoah. It appears to me what the Holy Ghost is saying is what Matthew Henry said in his commentary of this chapter do not be ashamed of your occupation. Mr. Henry said its better to be a credit to a mean post-or occupation than a shame to a nigh one. It Seems to me according to the Scripture you quoted here that the Hebrews and the Egyptian both called sheep cattle as well in those days. Note Pharoah 's comments after Joseph 's brothers told him their occupation as shepherds 47:6 "the land of Egypt is before thee in the best of the land make thou father and thou brethren dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity-or any hard workers among your brothers- then make them rulers of my cattle. Therefore, it seems that Pharoah himself had some sheep somewhere in his kingdom because they made it clear to him that they were shepherds. God bless us all and also in the understanding of his Word. Glory be to God in the highest through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen!
33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? 34 That ye shall say, Thy servants ' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen for every SHEPARDS is an abomination unto the Egyptians. After Joseph ask his Bros. to say cattle in GEN 47: 3 his bros still say SHEPARDS, could someone explain this to me. Thank you, Sandra
Although it is written the English interpretation as to the fact that there were three score and ten I would like to point out that in fact 70 went down in to Egypt. Leah and her team = 33 in all ( but we have to cross off, Err and Onan, who were kill for their transgressions ) =30 Zilpah and her offspring = 16 ….Bilhah and her line = 14 and Rachel/Benyamin = 70.
All in all that amounts to 68 ……. Yocheveth , Moses' future mother was born between the borders of Canaan and Egypt = 69 ………….and the last but certainly not the least G-D….after all He promised Jacob that He would not abandon him and therefore went down into Egypt too , thus closing the list at 70.
I would like to put an end to the pondering as to how many souls went down to Egypt. In the Hebrew scriptures it clearly states 70 went into Egypt and it is written as follows Reuven sons Chanuch, Paloo, Chatzran and Karmi/ Shimon sons Yamuel, Yamin, Ohad Yachin Tzohr Shaul (son of the Canaanite wife) /Levi sons Gershon, Kahat, M'riri/ Yehudah (Er Onan both killed in Canaan because of their crimes )Sheloh, Peretz ,Zerach … Peretz had 2 sons Chatzron, Chamul/ Yisseschar sons Tolah, Pooah, Yov, Shimron /Zvulon sons Sered, Elon, Yachliel ( the heads of these families being the sons who Leah bore and here they include Dinah) in all 33. Gad sons tzifyon chadi shooni etzbon eri arodi ereli / asher yimna yashvah yishvi briyah (serach their sister) and sons of briyah chever and malchiel these being the offspring of zilpah (leah's maid) in all 16 souls. Rachel gave birth to Joseph and Binyamin and the sons of biyamin belah becher ashbel gerah na'aman echi rosh moopim choopim aard, 14 in all. Gad son Chooshim / Naphtali sons Yachtzel Nuni Yetzer Shilem all the offspring of Bilha, Rachel's maid. Take off Er and Onan who dided in Cannan this leaves you with 68…. Yochevet, Moses future mother is borne between Canaan and Egypt , that is 69. So how come 70…….. Oh!!! How could we forget… G-d promised Jacob that he would go down into Egypt with them……. =70
I actually had a similar issue, but when you look at the verse carefully, then it makes sense. The keywords to focus on are "sons" and "daughters." The verse says that these were the SONS Leah bore to Jacob besides his daughter Dinah. This statement does not mention how many sons, but I count 32 sons total (deducting 2 that deceased in Canaan). The next sentence says that these sons and daughters of his were 33 in all, which I think is including Dinah.
Hope this makes sense.
@ Ruth Ann, I've counted the names numerous times and come up with 34 minus Er and Onan makes 32. I cannot derive 33 souls with the names given in this chapter and I'm not counting Pharez twice. Please help me to understand how there are 33?
