Dear Karen, women are very rarely mentioned in the bible because they are considered a part of man. Only significant woman with a true contribution and identity of their own are mentioned by name. Eve is significant because she is the first. Do you know Noah's wife where she came from or what her name is, what about lots wife? In the long list of names, only sons are mentioned by name, it doesn't mean daughters were not born. For this reason we will never really know Cain's wife.

something must have been wrong somewhere. These brothers couldn't have just killed one another for a simple reason.

God was pleased as Abel offered a fat animal. God did not like Cain because his offering is not equal
to that of Abel. This rule applies after millenniums even in the present day world a fat gift gets a greater weight with powerful and mighty.

This passage of the Bible has always bothered me. I read Trent's comment posted on 2010-01-13 and the Bible only mentions 4 people in existence. Was is possible as Trent suggested that the only way Cain knew his wife were from his mother? Or did Eve have daughters that were not mentioned in the Bible and the off springs moved to the Land of Nod? If the Lord God did create others, why were they not mentioned? This has always made me wonder, if more than one Adam and Eve were created and if so, why weren't they included? Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone will provide an answer.

The word again in Hebrew means Eve continued in labor. Therefore Cain and Abel had to have been twins. She had Cain and then continued in labor and had Abel.

There is no doubt that that was not the first time they were bringing offering to the Lord. The idea of a father being the head in family altar surely did not start today. The verse said Cain brought. You dont bring to yourself. You give to yourself. He must have brought to the High Priest, which surely was no other person but Adam. The two sacrifices must have been done in their presence. Both of them saw how each sacrifice was received, hence Cain's reaction. Abel's reaction must have provoked his elder brother who did not take it light. May I learn from Cain's reaction. I pray in Jesus name.

I suppose Cain married one of his younger sisters as Adam and Eve had many other children boys and girls after Cain and Abel, having in mind that there was no law or commandments yet. Any other suggessionns?

Ves No he didn't know the outcome we all have free will love.... that are loyal to him he does test.. Take Abraham and Isaac for example... God is going to use you he wants to know where your heart is..!! And then there are those like Kane That just don't care about anything Only that he was mad Because the Lord Saw that Abel's offering Was Of true heart and love toward him... For he gave the Lord his best...!!
  • Ves on Genesis 4:9 - 12 years ago
If God knows all, why ask the question in the first place? It not as though he didn't know Cain would lie. His test is useless as he already knew the answer. Furthermore, did God not know Cain would kill Able? Even before their conceptions, God should have known the outcome, correct?

A lot of info can be found by reading the Forgotten Books of the Bible, especially on Adam and Eve. May not be proven as the Bible is, but does seem to nake a lot of sense

Verse 15 The Mark of Cain - What is it ?? The person who would confront Cain will know with out a doubt the Mark which God had put upon Cain for all-time as his punishment for his sin. The person will leave Cain to go his own way. Amen.
  • Lydia on Genesis 4 - 12 years ago
Cain's offering was not rejected by God because of what he offered, its because of how he offered it. The Lord looks into our hearts.

Cain must have married his sister. The Bible does not record any other creation except for Adam & Eve and we are told that after Cain & Abel Adam got other sons and daughters.
  • Lisa on Genesis 4 - 12 years ago
Cain married before the bible mentions that Eve had daughters. So, therefore, Cain could not have married his sister.
  • Steve on Genesis 4 - 12 years ago
Just wondering, Cain and Abel were Adam's sons, where did the other people come from??
  • Anonymous on Genesis 4 - 12 years ago
"By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh." ( Hebrews 11:4)

And from the Hebrew texts; "And Abel he too brought of the firstborn of his flocks and of their fattest, and the Lord turned to Abel and to his offering."

And again, when we look to Jewish sacrificial practices we see that Fat represented perfection and good health in the sacrificial animal.

At first thought, "Doing not well" comes across as doing bad, but not quite so! Here, sin is being anthropomorphized as a ravening beast. It is identified separately from "doing not well", so we know they're not the same. Doing not well is simply the lack of doing good. It is being lukewarm.

A subtle but profound piece of advice is offered in this verse.

If we want to avoid sin, we should constantly occupy ourselves with doing good. Mediocrity is a street that leads to a really bad neighborhood.

A predator most often goes after the weak. So we should be putting on an excessively athletic display (of goodness) in an attempt to discourage it (sin). We want the ravenous beast to look and say, "Forget that!"

(This is my comment to Anonymous's Genesis Chapter 4 comment about verse 5 on 9/04/2013, 11:28am):

Since Abel, was a keeper of the "sheep", therefore he was able to offer the firstlings of his "flock" together with its "fat" to the Lord. And since Cain, was a tiller of the ground, therefore he brought of the fruit of the ground as his offering unto the LORD. God being a righteous God, knew that Cain couldn't produce "fat" out of the fruit of the ground. Therefore, "fat" wasn't the reason why God did not respect the offering of Cain. But the reason was because Cain didn't do well and it has something to do with "sin" as stated in verse 7.

(This is my respond to Thomas's Genesis Chapter 4 comment on 9/04/2013, 12:34pm):

You are right by saying that all human beings came from male named, Adam. He was the first man created by God and he got sons with his wife, Eve. Your conclusion was right that he also drawn sons and daughters by incest during his long life at that time. Remember that Adam and Eve were taken out of the garden of Eden and placed them to the East of Eden because they committed a sin against God. Remember also that Cain dwelt in the land of Nod which was located at the East of Eden after committing sin against God. Therefore, it is not impossible that all of them with their tribes mingled together at the east of Eden. So, the idea that there's another garden of Eden created is not true. But the fact which was based on the scriptures was that all of them started to multiply at the east of Eden. Remember that God placed an angel with a sword to guard the way to the Garden of Eden. It follows too that by then, all of them knew sin.

Not to be confrontational, but to attribute the concept of a hereafter to Aristotle (who died in 322 BC) while sitting in front of this particular document (given sometime before 1273 BC)...
