Discuss Genesis 7

I believe you're correct Bonnergy, there is no indication anywhere that the creatures under the water were affected by God's Judgement upon man & beast. Genesis 7, as you quoted, clearly indicates that as those pairs (or, sevens) of animals that were led into the Ark ( Genesis 7:8,9,14,15,23) were saved & all other creatures that lived on the land or flew were destroyed. Noah was never instructed to get pairs of sea creatures into the Ark. Why God allowed this, we can't know for sure, except that with a flood of that magnitude, all animals (& mankind) which could not live/breathe underwater, were destined to perish, save those which were saved by God. So, even though it was for mankind's wickedness the Earth was destroyed by water, unfortunately the innocent animals living above ground had to also perish with man.
  • Bonnergy on Genesis 7 - 1 year ago
Does it mean fishes and all other creatures that reside in the water were not destroyed by the flood? because I can't see where it was mentioned. But God destroyed man and every living creature by the flood, both on land and the birds of the air.
  • Chris - In Reply on Genesis 7 - 1 year ago
Hi Roena. The only passage to indicate this is in Genesis 7:7-10, i.e. after Noah, his family & animals were safely locked away in the Ark, "it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth." If we are to understand that the Earth began to reveal water or flooding (however minimal) at the seventh day of Noah entering the Ark, then it can be safely assumed that the rain began to fall a day or two before that seventh day.
  • Roena Melvin on Genesis 7 - 1 year ago
How many days was Noah and his family IN the Ark before the rain began to fall upon the earth?
  • Chris - In Reply - 1 year ago
I suppose, JRR, is how one understands Genesis 7:7,8,9,15. In verse 9, the inference is clearly to the animals that went into the Ark, even though of clean beasts, seven were taken (the question could be asked, 'why not six, why the odd number?'). Then in verse 15, we get the "unto Noah...two and two of all flesh" again. And those animals are again mentioned in the preceding verse. So were there other humans included with those animals? If so, shouldn't they be mentioned as well (maybe not by tribes or clans, but as homo sapiens), being more important than those in the 'animal' category? And if 1 Peter 3:20 tells us that "eight souls were saved by water", should we assume that if only humans were referred to, then why not these 'other' humans as well?

If some humans were not affected by the Flood & lived on, then it would be hard to accept that given Genesis 7:19 & the evidence of extinct sea life found at higher elevations. It seems that no part of the dry Earth was spared by this worldwide flood.

In my understanding, there were no other humans on board the Ark, apart from those mentioned. And all humans therefrom descended from Noah's sons. When giants appeared after that time, then there would be a reason for that, maybe a genetic aberration.
  • Chris - In Reply - 1 year ago
Hi JRR. That of course, is a good question, to which no conclusive reply can be given; just as many other aspects of the Bible that provide no certain understanding because of lack of information.

As examples, we know what Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33 tell us. The pre-flood nephilim are described as the product of the union of the sons of God with the daughters of men. We can choose to read this as 'every offspring that they had, produced giant-like men (& women)'. Could they also have produced more 'normal' sized offspring? We're not told - only an assumption & probably not a far-fetched one at that.

Then we see nephilim appear post-flood. We can't deny this reality because the Word gives it to us, so there must be an answer. But whatever the correct answer, it would be wrong to throw out or amend Scriptures such as Genesis 7:7 & 1 Peter 3:20 which tell us that only eight souls (of human-kind) were saved, to the destruction of all other humans. Therefore, based on this Truth, we could come up with opinions, such as, could the sons of God (maybe seen as the line of Shem, and previously, written of Seth), also inter-mixed with the daughters of men (maybe products of Ham & Japheth, & previously, of Cain), & produced giant offspring? So, the mention of giants anywhere in the Bible should not denote that giants were evil people because of their size, but that is how they grew, maybe arising from aberrations (read, birth defect), as the descendants of their first fathers grew in number & inter-mixed. Obviously, not every birth produced giants, but there were many in those days, as there are even some today.

So really, we are not given definitive answers, & even what I've given as a possibility, remains only that. But I think we can be certain, if the Bible says that all humans were destroyed because of their gross sins, then we must accept that as fact. As well, the Anakim were not judged as the old world was - giantism was never a sin.

Genesis 7:7: "And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood."

1 Peter 3:20: "Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, EIGHT SOULS were saved by water."

The Apostle Peter wrote in 1 Peter 3:20: "....the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water." And of course, Genesis 7:7 also states, "And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood."

Here, we get confirmation that only eight people were saved by entering the Ark - no mention of any children or slaves.

On a self-same day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the three (3) Sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his Sons with them, into the ark; My question and comments are did not mentioned the children of his three Sons Shem, and Ham, and Japheth and also, their slave's and Noah's wife slave's did not mention also to entered Ark. It's possible there have children of his three sons for Noah's grandchildren and also a slave to enter Ark. Please kindly deeper explanation to send us my email account address. We will be waiting for your response.

    Hi again RobL.

Sorry but I made a mistake in answering your question.

I gave you the rapture when your question was "How will our LORD God remove the evil this time which has more than likely repented(grieved) Him?"

The rapture is when Christ comes for his Church. as mentioned here in

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

We will be removed from the wrath.

The wrath of God comes upon all the Inhabitants of the Earth.

    Isaiah 24:1-23.

    Isaiah 34:1-17.

    Zephaniah 1:14-18

    Many other references.

NOTE: God's children is never called Inhabitants of the earth.

But we are not appointed to wrath.

    1 Thessalonians 5:1-9.

Now as far as removal of evil, this will happen following the rapture and the 70th week of Daniel. "7 years tribulation period" with the last 3 and a half being the great tribulation.

Note: "There will be people getting saved during this period "

Satan will be chained a thousand years and Christ will rule here on earth with a rod of Iron sitting on David's Throne. This is the Millennium kingdom.

Then the devil will be loosed and deceive the Nations again.

Then comes the wrath of God and the removal of Evil as you asked.

This is what's mentioned in Matthew 13:36-43.

    In Matthew 13:41 notice that the unrighteous is gathered. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

    This Parallels with

    Matthew 24:36-51.

These are taking away for judgment.

No removal of saints/Rapture here in these verses! It's the removal of the unrighteous.

The rapture It has already happened.

    Sorry for all the confusion.

    God bless.

    Dear RonLor,

Jesus spoke of many parables concerning this topic. One of them was when the Son of God sowed a field with good seed, and the devil came and inter-sowed his bad seed in the same field (the earth throughout the ages). The wheat and the tares grew up. Jesus said that the tares were not to be weeded out before harvest because some of the wheat would inevitably be plucked out before it was ready to be reaped. Then Jesus said that both will grow together until the angels come to harvest the souls of the Kingdom of God from the souls of the kingdom of the devil. This will happen at the end of the age. The tares will be harvested and gathered out of His (God's) Kingdom and thrown into the fire. Then the righteous souls will shine forth as the sun in the Father's kingdom. See Matthew 13:36-43.

So, from this parable that Jesus explained to the disciples. Evil, the devil and his angels, and those who are wicked and unsaved will continue to be in the world with believers until the end when Jesus returns.

    Hi Rob.

The short answer to your question is " The Rapture."

Those left behind is called "The inhabitants or Earth dwellers."

"This is not the second coming."

In the second coming we see no removal of the saints. He comes in judgment.

    God bless.

The number 7 means completion, God rested on the 7 th day. The seven churches spoken of in revelation, along with the stars. Numbers are very Significant throughout the bible. The 10 virgins are the ten tribes, the 2 sons are the two tribes in the prodical son. The numbers Jesus uses are very important. The ten lepers etc...
  • Jacqui - In Reply on Genesis 7 - 2 years ago
Numbers are very important in the Bible . However , there is always a danger that we can put too much significance on them and , if we do , we may end up paying more attention to them than we do to God's Word . I would caution anyone against getting too deeply into their significance as we could find ourselves on the edges of numerology and that wouldn't be advisable for anyone who considers themselves to be a Christian .

Why is the number 7 not spoke highly about because the number 7 is in Genesis 2:2 & 3.

Lev 19:19 Deu 22:9 horticulture, you don't plant different seeds side by side it will intermix and taste horrible don't cross pollinate; don't mix plant or seed, they will not mingle , want be fit to eat. GOD wants things the way he made them, they are perfect the way they are, same with animals and all HIS creation; HE doesn't want them mixed they are perfect the way HE created them.

I've never run across a verse like that. Was there something you had in mind about that possibility.

Now I have a cockatiel as a pet. A year ago her cockatiel mate died in a ice storm that lasted 10 days. I got her a parakeet and they tried to kill each most of the time. He was given to a lonely neighbor and she is very happy to have him :D

Same species know somehow, they are a match; no matter what color. They will still make babies. When feathered friends are happy they play and sing.

I have a question! What book and verse in the Bible does it say for a red bird not to lay with a blue bird?
  • When Earth Was Turned Upside Down - In Reply on Proverbs 1 - 2 years ago
Lucifer was a covering Archangel; 4th in line to Gods throne. He coveted Gods throne, and God had him thrown to earth. His name changed to Satan and his form was that of a serpent. He's described in Isaiah 14.

I was taught Isaiah 24 is a view of pre-Adamic earth.

Scientists have discovered and agree, what happened to earth killed everything at the same time; according to carbon dating of water and land animals.

Isaiah 24:18 refers to Genesis 7:11 and Psalm 18:7 and Psalm 76:12. God dealt with the high demon princes. The flood killed every human or animal bodies, that evil spirits had overtaken. Isaiah 14

Curiously, the scientists agree that the only life (carbon date proves it) that survived, were conies. Proverbs 30:26,

Psalm 104:18. They survived in underground burrows when the dinosaurs were exterminated. Got water from plants alive underground!! That's amazing.

Scientists agree, one single event extinguished all life on earth near the same carbon date. I believe what the Bible says: God turned the earth upside down.

We serve a MIGHTY GOD! Why do we worry at all?

I dutifully watch all those archeology shows on tv media for everybody, not just me. Little conies proved it; and they are in the Bible!! Read those Bible verses.

We are going to be living with this amazing Godhead, in heaven, every single day. ( 2 Peter 3) He is going to purify earth of our lame creations like hideous skyscrapers. No orchards. landscapes of boxy single family homes :/

I want to go to work with Jesus every single day; how about you?

Get a Study Reference Bible, with the Center Columns that have the a-b-c notes that take you to additional scriptures that add more info to what you are reading.

Yes you're going to get the full picture if you are willing to dig down like a Conie.

    Hey S Spencer,

I agree that our physical death ends any chance for our salvation and today is the accepted time for tomorrow we may be gone. When we die, what's inside will determine what we get, Isaiah 55:6. Revelation 22:11 along with verse 12 brings other scripture up to me, that you may not agree with.

Do you think it refers to the door being shut, at the end of the days of grace, the fulness of the Gentiles? I know it is not thought of much, but God does know when and who the last person will be saved. Those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior will no longer be able to find Him after he closes the door on salvation like God closed the door on the ark, Genesis 7:16 Luke 17:27.

He has warned us. The door will close someday. Whether it is upon our death or that He allows one hardened heart to remain hard or that He allows those to accept the delusion, 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12, the door to salvation will close. Matthew 7:13 - 14 Luke 13:24-25 John 10:9 Revelation 3:8.

    Thank you and God bless,

  • Why the Bible Seems To Skip Around - In Reply on Genesis 7 - 2 years ago
I do not mean to critique the way in which Moses wrote down the Book of Genesis. It is what it is. I don't know at this minute how many years passed between Noah, and the writer, Moses. Moses wrote the first 5 books of the Bible.

I am not saying Genesis is in any way inaccurate. Moses's would write a portion down; and come back later and pick up the thought a 2nd time. He had all of the Jews complaining about everything. As we do (are we there yet?) Flip forward and read of Moses's problems administrating to so many people "yanking on his robe". He finally appointed co-leadership to deal with the problems as they came up. So try to understand his dilemma. He HAD TO SIT BEFORE THE LORD, to hear how to write the 5 Books. He had the people complaining about the manna, etc.

You can see the breaks in continuity. It also shows us that principal__no man/woman is an island just unto himself/herself. We need interaction with others to help us complete tasks. In Moses's situation, his appointees relayed reports of what was happening.

Moses was a man just like us. When we need assistance, we ask God for our help__first. And then listen till the answer comes. When I noticed those "skip backs" in scripture, I just pencil a note to in my Bible where it happened.

The Bible was canonized this way. Others saw it too. However it in no way changes the thought or the record. There are no errors in the Bible. It is divinely inspired. That's why this one book has survived "6000 years."

    Q. When did Noah enter the Arc? 7 days before the flood or on the day the rain started.

7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

1.10And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

2.11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

3.And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

    4.13In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
