Discuss Isaiah 38

  • Hadassah - 1 year ago
Hezekiah prayed for more years. Notice what he says about death. It is a soul sleep verse.

18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

19 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth. Isaiah 38:18.

    MOre on hell testimonies

My last conversation got stuck on another thread. Here is a summary of what is often spurious evidences in hell testimonies.

    1. Satan being in hell. Revelation 20 and 21 should make it clear (the latter case even with Post Millennialists) that Satan is not in hell now; clearly he will be tormented before anyone else and as well as anyone else. Certain entities currently under the earth are in their own realm in Tartarus. Therefore; although it is possible that certain creatures are under the earth presently; it is hard to differentiate at times (unless clinical death is proven) that something isn't a demonic attack of torment.

    2. Lack of proper reverential fear of the Lord. There are a few testimonies like this in regard to heaven and hell testimonies; but too many that only have a mushy love for Christ; or just desperate clinging to Him. No genuine experience in God's presence can come without being on our faces; see Daniel; Isaiah and John for 3 scriptural examples of the same thing. See Deuteronomy as well when Moses "shook exceedingly" ( Heb. 12:21). See David's example when the destroying angel appeared in 1 Chron. 21:15. If an Archangel can bring such a reaction (see Daniel 10:5 and following); surely the Lord Himself even more so.

    3. Lack of testimony regarding the sin nature and our need to be saved from that. There also tends to be a doctrine of "losing your salvation" if we have besetting sins; as well as teachings that we must go through much of the Tribulation. More seem to be heading towards that mindset probably because Christ didn't return when they thought He would.

    4. Idea that true repentance would occur in hell but it would be too late. Or love for God and His Name. I stated in my last posting that in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man no one would be convinced if someone came back from the dead.

    ( Isaiah 38:18).

    5. God is grieving for lost souls in hell. ( Isaiah 66:24).

    Hey Jimbob,

My understanding. Time is constant our perception of it is not, it changes as we age. There are different explanations for why, like the percentage of our life is less ahead than behind, our mind receives fewer images, and more. I am in my 70s and I can say that time now is far faster than when I was younger.

My grandmother who was born in the 1800s and lived to be 103 said in laughter when she was 100 she could dose off and awake a year older. If you are getting older your perception of it will change. We can do things that will help like change routines, and reflect on things we see, read, and other things. Also, look at the progression of the world, The world is getting smaller every day.

The only thing I have found in the Bible that time may have changed is in Isaiah 38:8. If you look at history, calendars around the world changed around that time. If you do the math 10 degrees is the difference between 365.24 and 360-day-year. The Babylonian numerical system was 6 and 60-based, the number we still use to divide the sky: 360 degrees in a circle. Many other things are based on 360 like measurements, angles, sums, etc.

Some think it will change back before the end due to the times in Revelation. I don't know about that.

    God bless.

Psalm 88. Probably the most depressing passage in all scripture as to a personal viewpoint of experience in this life. This certainly reminds us of the book of Job. (see Job 30:15 in particular).

Verse 4 seems to indicate that this person is near unto death and is further supported by verse 6 where it seems the pit of Sheol is nigh. We see that those in that state are "cut off from thy hand" therefore there is no more mercy from God at that point. We are reminded of Isaiah 38:18 and many other passages which show that the dead will not praise God (verse 10). Furthermore; destruction and forgetfulness also describe the fate of those in hell (verse 11-12). Those things which affected our emotions and desires on earth ( Ecclesiastes 9:5) will not exist as the body returns to the dust. However; the soul lives on and for the unregenerate in conscious torment (see Lazarus and the unnamed rich man ( Luke 16:19-31).

Nonetheless; we must seek His face while He can be found. Job's state wasn't hopeless; and neither is anyone in Christ who truly repents and seeks the Lord. The enemy certainly can have us ensnared in sin; or oppressing us with feelings of hopelessness. We need to confess sin and seek His face; as well as trusting His promises despite circumstances. That is good advice surely in war; famine and other horrendous circumstances that bring us near death as well as seeing death all around us. These passages should remind us to seek those who may be disfigured by disease and to demonstrate God's love through service wherever we can.

If the Moon is round, and we can see that; isn't it reasonable that the Earth is round too.

    Why would God misinform us?

    Hello Kayden,

As I noticed in one of your other posts that you are young and are close with the Lord. This gives me great pleasure.

I just wanted to respond to this post. As the "shape of the earth" has been brought up here before. The main thing is that it is a topic that seems to divide the body of Christ more than do good for us that follow the Lord.

Again, I am very pleased to see someone so young on the path of truth.

I hope none of my brothers and sisters are angry with me for this but I must respond to you with this. Just the other night I was reading Isaiah. I came across Isaiah 38:7-8 where the Lord made the sun go backwards.

Just another verse for you to note.

    God bless.

Take it easy, Adam. May God will hear your prayers and bring you around to full health. Remember Hezekiah: Isaiah 38:1-5 Nothing is impossible with God.
  • Searching the word SOFT - In Reply on Psalms 91:7 - 4 years ago
    Job 23:16

For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:

    Job 41:3

Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?

    Psalms 55:21

The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

    Psalms 65:10

Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with showers: thou blessest the springing thereof.

    Proverbs 15:1

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

    Proverbs 25:15

By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

    Isaiah 38:15

What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

    Matthew 11:8

But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

    Luke 7:25

But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

    *********

I didn't find any soft headed people. I'm not sure what that means biblically either.

What version of Bible are you using?
  • WHAT DOES GOD LOOK LIKE - In Reply on Luke 14:26 - 4 years ago
God is Spirit. There are MANY scriptures on God being seen. If you read it slowly, you will see the description is in imagery.

Go get some pen & paper and write down these scriptures; then you can read them and picture God in your heart when you pray.

    John 1:18, John 6:46, John 5:37

    1 John 4:12, 1 John 3:6, 1 John 4:20

    1 Timothy 1:17, 1 Timothy 6:16

    Luke 1:31-32, Matthew 22, Romans 1:20

    Philippians 2, Hebrews 1:1-13,

    Colossians 1:15

    Deuteronomy 4:12, 15. Exodus 3:6

    Exodus 33:20-23

    Isaiah 38:11, Isaiah 64:4

    Job 9:11, Job 35:14, Job 23:8

This is a ps from me: if you have "pictures of God" (some artist imagined) in your home? You need to get rid of them,

According to Exodus 20. That's not a photograph of God and is considered to be a graven image. Crosses on the wall is ok, but not images.

I have 1 still life painting of a bowl of fruit and a pitcher of water. It makes me think of eating a meal with Jesus.

I agree. The flat earth theory I just can't understand with all the evidence against it. Would like to hear their arguments for it though.

I don't understand the belief in a flat earth when there are photos of the earth from space that show it is a big round ball. If you could give me some reliable references to the flat earth theory I would appreciate it. I am open to truth.
  • Jennelle Hand on Isaiah 38 - 5 years ago
i love this one! But I need to add that Flatearth is so important to Jesus and Truth is because billions of people are struggling to believe in a creator at all due to the ball theory and outerspace and other planets and alien life and the big bang and evolution. It makes God second fidel to a scientific concept. Almost every person I know who came to flatearth has come to accept a creator. Truth

"Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down." Which is easier, or which is impossible for God to do? to stop the clocks or turn back the entire ordinances of the stars and the heavens, or roll them back like a scroll at His Coming and the Day of the LORD?
  • A disciple on Isaiah 38 - 6 years ago
Then what do you do with the Scripture that says, "He sits on the circle of the earth?" There is no conspiracy to make people think the earth is round; and the silly idea of a flat earth is really a funny thing that anyone should get distracted and upset over. The earth and the other planets revolving around the sun doesn't threaten the truth of Jesus and the Scriptures or our salvation at all!
  • Lover of GOD on Isaiah 38 - 6 years ago
Robert, the sun rises in the east and set the west meaning the sun moves around the earth, not the earth moving around the sun. In passage of scripture the sun move back.

Isa. 38:19; Lk. 1: 17 - :........... turn the fathers (hearts) to the children. The Jews are the 'fathers' (they heard the word of the Lord FIRST); The apostles in the N.T. were Jews - and went to the 'children', the Gentiles. The disciples at first wanted Jesus to rebuke the Gentiles, because they were just learning and didn't understand as yet, but God 'fixed' it all in Acts ch. 2.

Psalm 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of You In the grave who will give You thanks? Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going. Isaiah 38:18 For Sheol the grave cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth. Psalm 115:17 The dead do not praise the LORD, Nor any who go down into silence. Why do Christians not believe these clear scriptures, which categorically disprove the doctrine of the immortal soul? Notice, the Bible says that when a person dies his memory ceases, he cannot praise God and he has no knowledge or wisdom. In other words, the soul of a person without a body is not conscious. The concept of the immortal soul was the result of pagan beliefs developed by Greek poets and philosophers. The Greek philosopher Plato fully developed the concept of the immortal soul, and this belief infiltrated the Roman Catholic Church and subsequently the Protestant churches. The Bible teaches resurrection, which is a rising from the dead. This is in direct opposition to the pagan belief in an immortal soul. Resurrection is the glorious central truth of the Bible. The Bible says that Jesus Christ earned resurrection immortal life for each and every person through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.

I believe that we should pray for the LORD 's will be done, but that does not mean that we cannot ask for anything that we THINK might be best for us, or something we desire. Just have to remember that what we ask may not be the best, and trust God 's final decision, by having a frame of mind that "this is what I think and desire, grant it if it is good, but thine will be done ".Remember the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ in the garden of Gethsemane.

Hezekiah was going to die because of the king of Assyria. Verse 8 might mean that the defense of Hezekiah will come from a nation in a different time zone that will fly over to help. Or this could be a symbolic turning back of time meaning his current condition will change back to a more secure position he held in the past. This could be done by negotiations with supporting countries that will stop or slow the assault. A possible but not probable cause of help to Hezekiah could be massive tectonic movement of the earths crust causing a pole shift and damage to Assyria. A compass is similar to a sundial. An aircraft compass has to be aligned with the planets northern magnetic pole.
  • Robert on Isaiah 38 - 10 years ago
this chapter is extremely profound in wisdom. Very hard to understand spiritually. He turned the shadow of the sun ten degrees backward? What does it mean. The sun is set, the earth rotates. So, what does it mean set the shadow backwards? Does it mean make the earth rotate clockwise for about ten degrees? What does it mean?
