But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
I have focused in today's postings on those who are nonbelievers; whether in an openly hostile lifestyle to God's Word; or a person who in their own efforts tries to be good and has the outward appearance of a morally responsible individual.
Exodus 12:48 states: A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the LORD's Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it.
(in short no pain no gain)
Leviticus 17:8-9 shows the rules of sacrificing before God were the same for a foreigner as well as an Israelite.
These verses are brought out to demonstrate that in the house of God there is no pandering for special interests. In the age of Grace we must accept His sacrificial atonement for our sins; and live accordingly. Just as we can't let the enemy in the camp as a principle in the Old Testament; this verse in Corinthians along with others show that we CANNOT fellowship with those who are sexually immoral; which includes homosexuality; fornication and adultery (and the theme is repeated in 1 Corinthians 6:9). Similar warnings are found in 2 Timothy; Ephesians and 2 Thessalonians and other places. We also need to address the rest of the verse about greedy people or swindlers; and that in many cases involves the Pastor himself. Someone partaking in New Age would be an idolater; and a slanderer could be someone caught up in gossip and believing everything he hears or deliberately lying. Finally; a drunkard which may be the one sin people tend to agree on also needs to repent; but such a person when reformed tends to display the most radical changes of all. We all need to carefully examine our friend
Adam and Eve were Saved by the cross the same way all that were saved in the OT.
I Would suggest forgiveness for Adam and Eve was granted before they were created.
I don't believe Adam and Eve surprised God by their disobedience in the Garden.
Christ was foreordained as the Lamb of God that take away the sins of the world "BEFORE" the foundation of the world, 1 Peter 1:18-20. Revelation 13:8.
Jesus' death on the cross was not an after thought by God after the event of mankind falling into sin.
God covering of Coats of skin for Adam and Eve suggest that there was a shedding of blood to cover their nakedness.
I'm sure the fig leaves mentioned in Genesis 3:7 covered there outwardly exposed bodies but not the inward exposed nakedness guilt caused by their transgression.
Besides, this was the work of their own hands.
Only the blood of Christ can take away sin
and those OT sacrifices pointed forward to Christ.
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.
God has all along been revealing the "lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world through these OT sacrifices.
As Christian disciples, we are to be "Christ-like" NOT "THE CHRIST! No one expects any Christian to achieve sinless perfection only Jesus Christ the son of GOD was ever able to do that.
Leviticus 17:10-14 The eating of BLOOD was likewise forbidden. The blood was for ATONEMENT, not for nourishment. "The life of the flesh is in the blood." v11 The principle behind atonement is life for life. Since the wages of sin is death, symbolized by the shedding of blood, so "without the shedding of blood is no remission." Forgiveness does not come because the penalty of sin is EXCUSED, but because it is [[[ TRANSFERRED ]]] to a sacrifice whose lifeblood is poured out. Verse 11 is one of the key verses in Leviticus and should be memorized. When an animal was slaughtered, its blood was drained immediately. An animal that died accidentally was unclean if its blood was not drained right away.
This reveals just how SERIOUS sin actually is. You can get rid of it, it follows you... It has to be TRANSFERRED.. This is why the blood of Jesus Christ is SO PRECIOUS! He is the ultimate sacrifice for all our sins past, present, and future. We are covered under his blood! As Christians, we should try to avoid sin as much as possible, but if we do fall down we can repent, and the LORDS' blood will cover that sin! That is how back-sliding Christians can be restored.
Hello Kstott. When the Bible speaks of blood, whether of animals or man, it denotes the miracle of life given us by God; "for the life of the flesh is in the blood" ( Leviticus 17:11). As all mankind are born with sinful flesh, with a propensity to sin & violate the holy requirements of God ( Romans 3:23), God being both loving & just, is compelled to either condemn us or forgive us. To condemn would be simple, as we fully deserve the penalty of our sins ( Romans 6:23), but God reached out to us in our miserable hopeless state & provided a way of hope, healing & restoration.
To His people Israel of old, God instituted the sacrificial system where the high priest would offer the blood of animals to atone for their sins & reconcile them to God ( Leviticus 8:15; Exodus 30:10). It was a case of the people either dying in their sins or that a substitute was provided on their behalf so their lives were spared. At this time, animals were sacrificed & their blood shed (i.e. their life given), & this was accepted by God to forgive them. But this was done yearly, because the blood offering of animals could never be permanent as this was man's offering to God, to stay God's Hand from them. But God had planned a future day, when He Himself would offer His Sacrifice to fully atone & redeem His people - & this Sacrifice would be made available to both Jew & Gentile. And this Sacrifice was God Himself, in sending His Word to become man ( John 1:1-14) & giving His Life as the only Pure & Perfect Sacrifice that would be fully acceptable to Him.
I've answered that fully in my previous opening statement, picking up the Cross & following Christ in the regeneration. The Way of death is the Way to receiving His life, & that more abundantly, by the Grace of God. The Law will ever be against the old Adamic nature, Rom 8:6,7;. The new birth could not be forth by the blood of bulls & goats, but Blood of Christ does, through the Eternal Spirit, the Power; making us partakers of the Divine Nature, its Rom 8:2-4; "might be fulfilled in us".
Other questions? We're a new creation, have the mind of Christ, the blood of the NC has fulfill it purpose, Gen 1:26;
1 Pet 1:2; the Blood & Life are synonymous, Leviticus 17:11; Christ Life was in His Blood which made it so very precious. Not only cleansing the flesh, but the conscience/heart. Hebrews 9:11-15; the eternal inheritance "the eternal Spirit", we too can offer up ourselves to God, He leads us in the very same path that He, Himself walk & empowering of the very same Spirit. Having cleansing us spirit, soul, & body in the regeneration, by entering Rom 6:4,5; We enter eternal life now, on earth as it is in heaven & in the end everlasting Life, the Blood of sprinkling, that speaks of better things than that of Abel..
That is what the Word of GOD says - Leviticus 17:11&14.
The soul is the own existence, it is the life, and the life(soul) of the body is the blood, so the blood is the soul.
Paul Apostle in his epistle to the Church of Corinthians, said: 1 Corinthians 15:50KJV - Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood(soul/life of the body) cannot inherit the kingdom of GOD; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
Throughout the Old Testament and of the shadows of the Son of Man you will see that God had always ordained a plan of redemption to be made for mankind after the fall. This is why God would provide a lamb to be slain in Genesis when Abraham offered his son Isaac as a burnt offering. Or how Judah wanted to intercede for Benjamin's captivity in Egypt or even how Moses wanted to die for the children of Israel when they committed the grave sin of worshiping another god despite their recent commitment. God did not want man to suffer for another man, instead he sent his own begotten Son to intercede for us,
through the punishment and fulfillment of the cross and the judgment of sin, where he became sin for us. Now that it is done, God has completed His plan of salvation for us and all we have to do is believe; and this is his grace and the new covenant which is his body and his blood.
God had already shown Adam and Eve that when they were in their fallen state and were without the Spirit of God (for He had left the moment they sinned to eat the fruit), He clothed them when they were naked and provided for them. He had to kill animals and taught them and their generations that there is no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood. For it is written in Leviticus 17:11; "For the life of the flesh is in the blood."
Now there is one whose life and blood is more precious than that of bulls and goats; which is he who is life itself: Jesus Christ, and the sacrifice that was made, is made once and lasts forever, and there shall be no more need or time when a new sacrifice needs to be made. Jesus had come in the flesh to tell us these things, to tell us the truth about him because he and the Father are one and he came to show us the Father himself. "Jesus answered: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6
The prohibition of consuming blood was reiterated at the council in Jerusalem in Acts 15 for both Jew and Gentile. So, this law is still in effect for believers. To me, I just trust that God's reasons for this commandment are for my benefit, so it is easy to obey this. I choose to eat meat that is medium done with no blood seeping from it.
Interesting that in John Ch. 6 Jesus says that unless one eats His flesh and drinks His blood one cannot have eternal life. This was greatly disturbing to the religious leaders and most of the Jews that heard these words. Most left off of following Him after this discourse. But the apostles stayed with Him even though this command was quite incredulous for them and the thought of cannibalizing Jesus (as they interpreted His words) was very offensive to them. Yet, they stayed and at a later time grew to understand what Jesus was speaking about here. The Last Supper was the time when Jesus instituted Communion using bread and wine to be as His body and blood of the New Covenant that was cut and sealed by His shed blood and the sacrifice of His body for the sins of the world for the forgiveness of sins.
The last section of this chapter speaks of regulations concerning eating animals that have died a natural death (not from disease) or torn apart by a beast. They were again prohibited from eating any of it blood and if they did eat the flesh, they would need to bathe themselves and be unclean until the evening.
God took the shedding of any blood from any creature He had made a serious matter, not so much prohibited, but that since sins must be covered by the shedding of blood, His people should be careful to be respectful of the animals they slaughter for food or for sacrifice.
In 1 Cor. 11:17-34 Paul gives instructions on partaking in Communion in church worship. His words emphasize the respect and honor we are to give to this ordinance as in we are partaking of the body and blood of Jesus in fellowship
God's law concerning the slaying of animals for sacrifice
Prohibition of consuming blood
Directives concerning animals who die naturally or are killed by a beast.
From Adam to the time of the Exodus-those who had faith in the true God would create altars and sacrifice animals to God wherever and whenever they felt it was good to do so. Each man was his own priest for himself and his household. But now with the priesthood installed and sacrificial ceremonies in place and the law given to the Israelites, the common people were to stop killing animals and sacrificing them in the open fields. Instead, they were to bring each animal they wished to sacrifice to the door of the tent of meeting to be offered by the priests in the correct way instructed in Leviticus 1-16. It was the priests' job to accept each animal for sacrifice at the tent of meeting. So they were spending most of their time in this tabernacle. People could slaughter the animal at home, but then they were to bring it to the tent of meeting to be sacrificed on the brazen altar by the priest. All of the blood was to be drained from the animal and if done so outside of the tabernacle, the blood was to be covered with dust. Some of it would be brought to the tabernacle to be poured out at the altar. The fat was burned, and if a peace offering, they could take of the meat of the butchered animal and eat it with their families and the priests.
God was concerned that if allowed to sacrifice anywhere and anytime they chose, the Israelites would revert to sacrificial practices of the pagan around them and make sacrifices to idols and be led astray from YHWH.
In the middle of the chapter, the Israelites are sternly commanded again to never consume the blood of any animal, like the heathens did, but also because God says that the life is in the blood. So, to consume the blood one would be consuming a live substance rather than dead food.
Genesis 3:15. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and ( HER SEED;) it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise ( HIS HEEL.)
Genesis 22:18.
Genesis 49:10.
The Passover Lamb of God ( Exodus 12:1-28)
Leviticus teaches the way to God is by sacrifice. JESUS!
Leviticus 17:11. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
In the book of Leviticus you see a portrait of Christ and his work on the cross. When studying it.
It does well to go back and forward to new testament and present Christ. Especially Hebrews, That picture will paint itself.
Everything is a patterns of things in heavens to prepare the world for the great work done by The Lord Jesus Christ 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Romans 3:25
1 John 2:2
2 John 4:10
You understand the blood shed by Jesus, you will believe, have faith, and trust in Jesus blood only. You cannot save or trust yourself. He will give you a Comforter to guide you to the Kingdom of God here on earth.
First and foremost are you saved by the blood of the crucified Jesus Christ in whom we received all treasures and knowledge by acknowledging the mystery of God and of the Father, of Christ His Son (One God in three persons-The Trinity)? Colossians 1:27-28 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
I just have noticed some contentions about this in some comments. We can talk about the end times but it is very important to ALL that they know 100% they are saved and that they are going to Heaven. Noticed even in the beginning God gave us the messages on the importance of the blood from Genesis to Revelation.
The LORD God must have sacrificed blood, for it maybe a lamb to make coats of skins to clothed Adam and Eve. Genesis 3:21
We also see the importance of blood sacrifices between Cain and Abel. Genesis 4:3 Understand the motive of Cain. He offered the fruit of the ground whereby Cain worked hard for it. Like saying to God "Look what I did". I say this because of v5. In v4 Abel was respected because of animal blood sacrificed. This story depicted not of what you do, God is interested in you acknowledging the blood which are examples of a type of what later Jesus Christ would do as our own lamb. Clearly here we are saved by the blood and not by works.
Colossians 1:5; 1:14; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
You can read in Leviticus that they have to kill a lamb over and over again in order to get forgiveness of sins. Now look at Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Your soul being forgiven through blood. Revelation1:5;5:9. Are you saved by the blood of Jesus Christ?
Jim In the context I believe concerning sin and its consequences think about this, if adam and eve would not have sinned
would they have died or gotten old and decayed no. Because no effects from the serpent I.E. satan. That being said all
sickness disease illness due to sin in the blood and the life in the flesh is in the blood leviticus 17:11. We are born
Ephesians 2:1 dead in trespasses and sin due to Adam and Eve's transgression or sin. So were all including believers
in the old testament dealing with the challenge of walking true to Gods Word. When David and your right committing
adultery and murder are actions worthy of death in the old testament but God loving David sends a prophet to Him
nathan and Nathan Lovingly shows David His grievous error I mean David was out there spiritually His Self Pride got to
Him and we all pay for sin because the justice of God demands justice so he lifted his hand of protection and the enemy
was allowed to steal and kill. Now David via experience knew Gods Love definitely His grace and mercy because David
had Gods spirit upon him, put sackcloth and ashes on and basically begged to not loose the child. This is not saying
that all children die because a parent committed a sin personally. Every situation is different and there are things that
are occurring now that are a result of the sins of the world which we all battle. You can read when the children got into
serious forms of idolatry that when God walked way the destroyer came wiped out crops land taken over by the pagan
tribes that constantly God gave the warning to not do and the consequences. In Deuteronomy 31:16 the lord told Moses
your gonna die and after that the people are going to go whoring after other gods in strange lands and break my covenant. verse 17 and 18 he will hide His face it doesn't say he is going to do the evils! Everything works when God is in it when he's not. It's open season.
Chris Since Adams original make up was body soul and spirit i.e. created in Gods Image which is spirit then body and soul, then became corrupt after the downfall because the sin contaminated the blood line what made our Saviour the perfect sacrifice is that he never committed an act of sin but also He had sinless blood because bloodline is passed from the Father in the sperm and God created that life in Mary and in leviticus 17:11 the life of the flesh is in the blood and Jesus christ had perfect sinless blood. Adam had that originally but lost it when he trangressed.
Delia In regards to the genetics of Jesus Christ the human side was Mary the mother, the father side was God who created sperm in mary and keep in mind in genetics the dominant characteristics are from the male side in the blood line. That's why Jesus christ had sinless blood I.E. Lamb of god which taketh away sin of the world. In leviticus 17: 11 the life of the flesh is in the blood. In Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of the flesh and blood he also himself likewise took part [the flesh] of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil. Also in Mathew 27:3+4 Then Judas which had betrayed him when he saw that he was condemned repented himself and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the priests and elders. Verse 4 Saying I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.
Hi English Sacha Absolutely correct, keep something in mind the seed of the woman was put there by God, that's why Jesus Christ had sinless blood, Leviticus 17:11 the life of the flesh is in the blood. Woman carries eggs not seed, God created seed in Mary. The human side was Mary and correct He was Judean which fulfilled all prophecy. In Hebrews 2:14 For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood He Jesus also himself likewise took part of the same. His blood which was sinless His flesh Human the perfect sacrifice. Its really neat.
Hi Dense In Mathew 1:16 Scripture state and Jacob begat joseph the husband of mary of whom was born Jesus who was born Christ. Jesus Christ had sinless blood because the seed was from God Luke 1:30-35 the human side was mary, human prodigy is passed on through the father I.E. His seed. In leviticus 17: 11 The life of the flesh is in the blood jesus Christ has sinless blood that's genealogy. Prayerfully this helped God Bless
Help from Evangelists Another question to ask your friend thousands of people have gone to war and fought for love of freedom and country and family. Isn't that in certain way sacrificing their lives so that others would be free. God gave freely out of love Romans 5:6-8 his Only begotten son Jesus Christ for us to be spiritually set free from bondage of sin, broken fellowship with God. Jesus Christ gave Himself freely out of love by doing the will of a loving Father God so God could have the Family He always desired. Why blood sacrifice in Leviticus 17:11 the life of the flesh is in the blood Jesus Christ blood is the payment for our sins and His broken body was for our healing. Sacraficial lamb of God.
Isaiah 53:10 "Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand."
According to this verse, it was the Messiah's soul (or life; Hebrew word is nephesh) that was made an offering for sin.
Leviticus 17:11 "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
According to this verse, the life (or soul; Hebrew word is nephesh) is in the blood. Therefore, by shedding his blood, the Messiah shed his perfect life (or soul) to atone for the sin of mankind.
HI Beatrice. Here is some verses to start with, Maybe someone more capable would like to elaborate on this further
Hebrews 9:22. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Leviticus 17:11. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
The life is in the blood and the wages of sin is death. God don't pardon sin, Jesus came to die in our place because all have sinned. Thats why when John the baptist saw him he said behold the lamb that take away the sins of the world.
"Why is the shedding of blood need for the taking away sin"
Because the principle established in Eden was a life for life. "the wages of sin is death" Romans 6:23. "for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof" Leviticus 17:14, God has instructed us that blood is sacrosanct, that is, it has meaning beyond function.
Sinful Adam and Eve covered themselves with a lesser species of creation, as did sinful Satan. By the grace of God, he gave them a temporary acceptable covering, reflecting to Adam and Eve that his justice will be
done. "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin" Romans 5:12. In Eden it was God who demonstrated death for Adam and Eve and established the meaning of a blood sacrifice. The works of man has
no standing in God's performance of absolute justice.
The breath of life, from God into Adam ( Gen 2:7), became Adam's own spirit.
The Hebrew word "naphach", which is translated as "breathed", can mean breathed or to blow into, or to inflate. The Hebrew word "neshamah", which is translated as "breath", refers to vital breath of inspiration, and is also translated as "spirit" in other Old Testament verses such as in Proverbs 20:27, which states "The spirit ("neshamah") of a man is the candle of the Lord". From the meanings of these Hebrew words, the phrase "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life", from Genesis 2:7 can be restated as "blew into his nostrils the spirit of life". We know Adam's spirit - the breath from God, is what gave him life. Another words, Adam's spirit entering his body from God's breath (or "spirit"), started his heart to beat, and then, Adam's spirit flowed into his bloodstream, causing Adam to become a living soul ( Gen. 2:7). As you can tell from my explanation, God breathed Adam's spirit into him, and, as a result, Adam's soul was created. Some feel that this verse merely says that Adam came to life, but let's take a closer look. How do I know his spirit entered his bloodstream? That word "soul" is translated from the Hebrew word "Nephesh". There is another reference in the Bible, at Leviticus 17:11, which states: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Another reference is at Deuteronomy 12:23, which also indicates that "the blood is the life". However, in both of these verses, it is also the word "Nephesh", which is, in fact, translated "life", instead of "soul", as it's translated in Genesis 2:7. In Deuteronomy 12:23, God is telling Moses not to allow the people to eat the blood of animals, because "the blood is the soul". Leviticus 17:11 declares that "the soul of the flesh is in the blood".
This is from a Commentary on Google. It shows the seriousness of perversion. In most cases it's a death sentence.
Keil and Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament:
Whoever cursed father or mother was to be punished with death ( Leviticus 19:3); "His blood would be upon him." The CURSING of parents was a capital crime (see at Leviticus 17:4, and for the plural Exodus 22:1 and Genesis 4:10), which was to return upon the doer of it, according to Genesis 9:6. The same punishment was to be inflicted upon ADULTERY ( Leviticus 20:10, cf. Leviticus 18:20), carnal intercourse with a father's wife ( Leviticus 20:11, cf. Leviticus 18:7-8) or with a daughter-in-law ( Leviticus 20:12, cf. Leviticus 18:17), SODOMY ( Leviticus 20:13, cf. Leviticus 18:22), sexual intercourse with a mother and her daughter, in which case the punishment was to be heightened by the burning of the criminals when put to death ( Leviticus 20:14, cf. Leviticus 18:17), lying (mating) with a beast ( Leviticus 20:15, Leviticus 20:16, cf. Leviticus 18:23), sexual intercourse with a half-sister ( Leviticus 20:17, cf. Leviticus 18:9 and Leviticus 18:11), and lying with a menstruous woman ( Leviticus 20:18, cf. Leviticus 18:19). The punishment of death, which was to be inflicted in all these cases upon both the criminals, and also upon the beast that had been abused ( Leviticus 20:15, Leviticus 20:16), was to be by stoning, according to Leviticus 20:2, Leviticus 20:27, and Deuteronomy 22:21.; and by the burning ( Leviticus 20:14) we are not to understand death by fire, or burning alive, but, as we may clearly see from Joshua 7:15 and Joshua 7:25, burning the corpse after death. This was also the case in Leviticus 21:9 and Genesis 38:24.

Leviticus 17:11 Christ life was in His Blood
In Christ the words Blood & Life are synonym

in love & truth
Hi Chris
How do we fulfill the requirements of the Law?
I've answered that fully in my previous opening statement, picking up the Cross & following Christ in the regeneration. The Way of death is the Way to receiving His life, & that more abundantly, by the Grace of God. The Law will ever be against the old Adamic nature, Rom 8:6,7;. The new birth could not be forth by the blood of bulls & goats, but Blood of Christ does, through the Eternal Spirit, the Power; making us partakers of the Divine Nature, its Rom 8:2-4; "might be fulfilled in us".
Other questions? We're a new creation, have the mind of Christ, the blood of the NC has fulfill it purpose, Gen 1:26;
Paul Apostle in his epistle to the Church of Corinthians, said: 1 Corinthians 15:50KJV - Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood(soul/life of the body) cannot inherit the kingdom of GOD; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
through the punishment and fulfillment of the cross and the judgment of sin, where he became sin for us.
This chapter has a few different subjects:
Here is just a few of many.
Genesis 3:15. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and ( HER SEED;) it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise ( HIS HEEL.)
Genesis 22:18.

Psalms 22.
Isaiah 7:14.
Isaiah 9:6-7.
Micah 5:2.

I hope this helps.
God bless.

You understand the blood shed by Jesus, you will believe, have faith, and trust in Jesus blood only. You cannot save or trust yourself. He will give you a Comforter to guide you to the Kingdom of God here on earth.
Glory to the powerful God always.
Are you saved by the blood of Jesus Christ?
would they have died or gotten old and decayed no.

Just something to think about.

Hopefully these scriptures are helpful.
