XXI. OF THE GRACE OF TITHING AND GIVING

I believe God's plan of finance for His Baptist Church's is to be tithes and offerings. Scriptural giving is one of the fundamentals of the faith. I believe that every Believer, as a steward of that portion of God's wealth entrusted to him or her, is obligated to support his or her Baptist Church financially. I believe that God has established the tithe as a basis of giving but that every Believer should also give other offerings sacrificially and cheerfully to the support of his or her Baptist Church for the relief of those in need, and the spread of the Gospel. I believe that Church members are commanded to bring their tithes and offerings into the Storehouse (Common Treasury) of their Baptist Church upon the first day of the week (Sunday). I believe that a Believer relinquishes all rights to direct the use of the tithe or offering once the gift has been made. I believe under grace we give, and do not pay, the tithe - "Abraham GAVE a tenth part of all." "Abraham GAVE the tenth part of the spoils," and this was four hundred years before the Law, and is confirmed in the New Testament, the Lord Jesus Himself said concerning the tithe, "... these ought ye to have done ..." ( Genesis 14:20; Leviticus 27:30; Proverbs 3:9, 10; Malachi 3:10; Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42; Acts 4:34, 35, 37; 1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 8:7; 2 Corinthians 9:6, 7; Galatians 6:6; Ephesians 4:28; 1 Timothy 5:17, 18; Hebrews 7:2, 4; 1 John 3:17).

Now that I have completed this book I am amazed at how much I have learned! I have read this book time and again in the past without really understanding it much. But this time, God has richly blessed me with so much good instruction. I am thankful to have taken the time to really search it and study, rather than try to breeze over it lightly, thinking it is only Old Testament stuff.

I am glad that I do not feel compelled to study through these books quickly or at any certain pace or along any timeline. I can take all the time God gives me to delve into these books without feeling hurried. So thankful!

Leviticus Chapter 27

Here I am at the end of this Book. This chapter speaks mostly of voluntary offerings made to God by a vow and then a few verses concerning three types of tithe.

The emphasis is for a person to carefully consider any vow they make to the Lord being sure it is one they can gladly fulfill and not desire to take back from God.

Jesus said, "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's."

So just as paying taxes to Caesar is a "no take back" action, giving to God what He has rightful claim to is a "no take back" action, too.

Jesus said to let our "yes be yes and our No be No" and warned against vowing. We are to be true to our word and promises, just as God is true to His Word and promises. He does not lie, deceive, cheat, or take advantage of us, but He works for our benefit. We should have such an attitude towards others.

Jesus said to "count the cost" of following Him. We should be eager to obey God, but we do need to realize that following Him is a giving of "all of me to all of You" life.

God instructed the Pharisees about what they were setting apart for the Lord as Corban (holy unto the Lord), chastising them for doing this to avoid caring for their parents and family members in need, when what they set aside for the Lord also benefitted them, as the priests were to partake of what was offered to the Lord. We should be careful that our service "to the Lord" doesn't cause us to neglect our family and their needs. We serve first in our immediate family and then in the church. How easily children and aging parents can be significantly neglected by good meaning parents who are over dedicated to church work and functions. Pretty soon, the aging parents are gone and children are adults and the opportunity for closeness that could have been is now long passed and the family suffers.

So, we should daily seek the Lord as to what we will give to Him each day. This daily walk is what He wants more than big vows/offerings.

Psalm 23:4, addressing the Lord Shepherd, says, "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me." David bases this description on the practices of shepherds in his day. Shepherds of the time commonly carried a rod and staff as essential to their work.

The rod mentioned in Psalm 23 is a symbol of the Lord's strength and protection. The rod was a sturdy wooden stick used as a weapon to fight off wild animals who might have hoped to make an easy meal out of an otherwise defenseless flock of sheep. The shepherd also used the rod to help him keep count of the sheep within the flock (as alluded to in Leviticus 27:32). Young David recounted an incident to King Saul in which he probably used his shepherd's rod: "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it" ( 1 Samuel 17:34-35).

The staff mentioned in Psalm 23 is a symbol of the Lord's guidance and lovingkindness. The staff was a long, slender stick, often hooked at the tip, used primarily to direct the flock. Sheep are notorious wanderers, and once away from the shepherd's watchful eye, they get into all sorts of trouble ( Matthew 18:12-14). The shepherd used his staff to keep his sheep out of danger and close to himself. If a sheep became trapped in a precarious position, the shepherd would loop the curved end of the staff around the neck of the sheep and retrieve it back to safety.

Now read Psalm 23 again. Guidance, protection and correction. If you feel an occasional TUG by the Spirit, that is your Lord correcting your course.

Leviticus 27:v 30. And all the tithe of the land, whether of the corn of the earth, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD's; it is holy to the Lord.

There are more:

Deuteronomy 14:22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

This is the tax that the Governors should have.

Later, tax was levied on taxes. As it is in today's society.

Matthew 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

Genesis 28:20-22 Jacob established a promise to GOD on his Tithe. Giving a 10th , 10% of 100% if translation fits our measurements. Malachi 3:10, Matthew 25:31-46, Matthew 15:1-6, James 1:27, Leviticus 27:30, I hope this is helpful

Two Theories On This Biblical Account

1. The king James bible says the following; he would offer her as burnt sacrifice, she lamented being a virgin for two months, then he did what he vowed. He vowed to offer her to the lord as a burnt sacrifice. This is the clear meaning of the language used in the King James Bible. This is sometimes confused with she was lamenting her virginity because she would have to remain celibate but this is not what the bible says and there are two primary issues.

2. Theory 2 says he just offered her to the lord to be celibate the rest of her life. Two problems here. 1. Levitical law allows for making a trespass offering when a person makes a vow like this. Instead of sacrificing her or dedicating her to the lord to be celibate he could have just made a tress pass offering to be forgiven of a sinful or un-kept vow. Read Leviticus 5:4-6. The second problem is if he didn't sacrifice her as the bible says and just dedicated her to the lord, Levitical law also allows a person to buy back someone they previously dedicated to the lord for 30 shekels. Leviticus 27:2-4

Honestly after being ran off by his brother Jephthah spent a lot of time out in the world and probably was not even familiar with the Levitical law any more. Not knowing the law he probably figured he was doing the right thing by sacrificing her when in reality he was not obeying god in this act, he was committing murder. The sin was making the vow in the first place and remedy was already provided for by god via a trespass offering.

To answer your question, just go straight into His Word. Jesus is "the Word", He is the same as He was yesterday. Remember, Jesus didn't abolish the law, He completed it. The old testament holds enough examples about tithing. As Believers, we can't keep going to the "letter" or theology of Gods Word. As well as separating the bible as two era. It's one book, one God, one Word. Jesus is the same as yesterday, so He will be the same in the New Testament as He was in the Old. Peace

The 2 great commandments are mentioned every time. The first in to love the Lord thy God with all they heart,mind and soul and the second is to love thy neighbor as thyself. By keeping the 10, you are keeping the 2.

Are the 10 commandments part of the Mosaic Law and if so, then one must keep the whole law, true? If one lets God empower them to keep the two Great Commandments,
no, Jesus fulfilled the 10 Commandments (lived a sinless life). So being a Christian, you would want to do the things that He told you to do,correct? He says And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things I say? You aren't saved because you try and keep the law, keeping the law is the fruit of being saved

New Testament Scripture, "If you love Me, keep my Commandments" ( John 14:15); in these types of discussions, in general, why aren't the two Great Commandments also mentioned since they are mentioned in the NT also? Getting tired, Are the 10 commandments part of the Mosaic Law and if so, then one must keep the whole law, true? Nita, Your tithing is between you and God. When we go to church we are entering the Lord's house it is Holy so when you tithe it should be form your heart and God will bless you. If the church leaders use tithe money for any reason than holy reasons then God will deal with who does this , but not you. I hope this helps.

Tithing is not 'limited' to the O.T.; Matt. 23:23. Even tho' the 4 Gospels are still the O.T. age (Jesus hadn't died yet, ascended and sent the Holy Ghost as per Acts2:38). The testator has to die before his 'will' can be enacted. The N.T. was Jesus will. Jesus teachings in the O.T. Gospels were for the N.T; just as our 1st grade learning is for our H.S. graduation. O.T. to Jesus' teachings to N.T

Tithing: One cannot judge their church on what it does with the tithe. Because, even if they give out yearly printed documents on what they have done - there's no way to know if that is what was done. The only criteria for judging the truth of a church is - Acts 2:38. This was the very beginning of Jesus' church. Very few 'churches' baptize in the name of Jesus.

tithing is limited to the old testament.read carefully.the jews tithed twice a year when they harvested their crops.they never tithed money.they gave free will offerings to support the temple if they had it.the crops they tithed were for the priest and the poor people in the synagogue.when JESUS came he changed all the rules.

On Tithing. Has any one reading this thought to look in the new testament and see what it has to say about tithing? You won't have to look hard, because the New Testament doesn't mention tithing, except for referencing it in the Old Testament. God loves a cheerful giver, he wants His people to give from the heart, not grudingly or by force. Brenda Romine: Yes, you must still obey the original Commandments. Keeping the 10 Commandments is what true Christianity is all about. These are not statutes or dietary guidelines, these are COMMANDMENTS. here is what Jesus says, "if you love Me, keep my Commandments" He did not say keep His statutes.

As I continue my study on tithing I have made up my mind that my tenth is render unto God and if the church does not do what God has set fouth for the church to do with the tithe that I pay then I pray that God would deal with the church.

Galatians 2:16-17. Is really the answer, Are you still sinning? Christ is not the minister of sin, and your burden to pay tithes will not atone for it.

Nita, if you 're having issues with your current church in regards to leadership, then I would suggest finding another church which you can support. The tithe is important as it reflects your trust in the Lord for all you have and are. Sadly, some people look for a 'loophole ' to avoid paying their tithe by presenting examples such as you have. Ask the Lord for direction in finding a new church home or if He wants you to stay where you 're at.

I am trying to learn more about tithing, i 'm finding the church we tithe to has some serious compromising in leadership. should i not be concerned about where i tithe and what its used for as long as it is a church? please help me underestand.

Leviticus 27 34 Again, these commandments were given to Moses on Mt. Sinai by the Lord. People think they are supposed to obey the ten commandments, but if they believe that why don 't they follow all the other commandments, statutes, and judgments given to Moses on Mt. Sinai?

I now understand better that there are considerations in the bible for those who want to pay part can 't pay all at once. used to pay just the amount i calculated as tithe before even when i paid part. But now, I know better.

Well I Started Reading Chapter 27:29 Because of a tv show trying to understand why a Man was killing people who were sining. He call Himself a god But After Reading The Whole Chapted i was getting that it Was About If A man was Serving another man he could not be redeem but put to death. and than i got the Part of paying Tithes 10% of of what our pay was before taxes? I Need To keep Reading For More Insight....

This confuses me a little. I have always been told to give ten percent as tithe. Does that equal out to the fifth part???
