Richman does not feed the homeless who hungers (Lazarus).

Both men die and one goes to heaven and one to hell.

Richman in hell begs much like Lazarus when they were both alive.

Richman ask Abraham to save his brethen who are like him so they may repent and change their ways.

Abraham says they have Moses and the prophets. If they don't listen to them how will they listen to me?

    Great read.

Sister GiGi, isn't it interesting the three that met Abraham were all angels and yet were also men. Christ being the angel of the Lord. ( 1 Corinthians 15:49)

Psalms 103:20 Bless the Lord ye his angels ....

Psalms 104:4 Who maketh his angels SPIRITS; his ministers a FLAME of fire.

Luke 16:24 .....for I am in torment in this FLAME

1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such a one unto Satan for the DESTRUCTION of the FLESH, that the SPIRIT may BE SAVED....

Hebrews 12:29 for our God is a consuming fire (a single flame).

Colossians 1:27 .... this mystery.... CHRIST IN YOU....

Hello Bill & thank you once again. As I understand from your earlier post, that you also believe that 'sleep' in this instance, refers to death. It being a euphemism, unlike 'trust' (in your example), which isn't one. That being the case, 'sleeping in the salvation of Jesus', seems fine in one sense, yet doesn't fit the context here. Paul is writing to the Thessalonians because of their concern & sorrow that those who have departed earlier have altogether disappeared from view. So Paul says, that those who have died may indeed have their bodies in the grave, but when Jesus comes, He will bring those very persons back to Earth with Him ( 1 Thessalonians 4:13,14). There is no break in the train of thought here (from verses 13-18).

Re: 1 Samuel 28:11-20. This is in the OT economy, where we can understand that Samuel's spirit, & of those deemed righteous, were in a holding place of comfort, even as Jesus outlined in Luke 16:19-31. After the crucifixion & resurrection, we don't find evidence of such a place of rest for the believer.

With the account of the rich man & Lazarus, we might have to defer on that, as I feel, if Lazarus didn't exist, then really none of the other details would make sense & would have to be treated metaphorically (i.e. no place of punishment & suffering).

"Jesus restored life to at least three (3) bodies, for these are recorded", you wrote. Sorry, I need enlightening: where is this number recorded? I only know of, "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose", without giving a number. Many thanks again, brother.
  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Thessalonians 4:17 - 3 years ago
Thanks for your response, Bill. You wrote: "Paul does not say the body will be raised; The sleeping spirit is raised from its rest, or sleep." Yet, in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 we read: "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him." Of course, there can be discussion on why God's Name is mentioned here, but the verse says that those who have slept (in Jesus), God will bring with Him. And in the following verses, "the dead will rise first". Who then would be those whom God brings & the dead rising, if the dead doesn't represent bodies of people?

My mention of Lazarus is the one spoken of in John chapter 11, the brother of Mary & Martha. But since you mentioned Lazarus of Luke 16:19-31, believing this account to only be a parable, then in my understanding, Jesus never used people's names in His parables. If this was a parable, the Pharisees & others listening to Him, could well ask Jesus, who Lazarus was. Jesus of course, would have to say, 'I just made up this fictious name', thereby giving them further reason to continue their derision of Him. It was always, 'a certain man, or a sower who went out', as unnamed people in parables. Then of course, Paul's description of sleep, in my understanding, is simply the body lifeless & decaying, awaiting the resurrection when the spirit is joined to the resurrected body, as in Matthew 27:52,53, when bodies of the saints were resurrected at Jesus' crucifixion. Those spirits must have returned, the bodies recomposed, & another spectacle of proof of the One Whom they crucified. So, it may be quite possible, that a similar miracle will take place at the Lord's Coming, of spirits returning to their newly reconstituted bodies.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts brother.

Where does the spirit of man go? Ecclesiastes 12:7 cp James 2:26

Is there a holding place for such? And where could this place be?

    2) After The Resurrection Of The LORD JESUS CHRIST, paradise is now with The Throne Of God {Third Heaven?}, and Body Of CHRIST 'members' Immediately, upon physical death {'sleep' is the metaphor for the 'dead body'} "Depart to be WITH our Blessed God And Saviour, JESUS CHRIST!" 2 Corinthians 5:6,8 Philippians 1:21,23 'Confirmed' By:

    3) ...Those 'asleep In JESUS'..." {metaphor for 'resting' in JESUS}, "...Will God {JESUS} Bring With HIM!" 1 Thessalonians 4:14 At our Great GRACE Departure! 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 Amen?

When you commit suicide, YOU prevent the plans God had for your life, from ever happening.

IF you received Jesus as your Savior and Lord as it says in John chapter 3,

Jesus gave you the Holy Spirit to be your HELPER; and to COMFORT YOU, TEACH YOU about Jesus.

    3. Respond: Believe, Repent, Confess, Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior

To be saved, we must believe that Jesus is Lord and believe that He died for our sins. This confession acknowledges before God that we are unable to attain righteousness on our own and that we accept His plan for our lives.

    PRAY THIS PRAYER WITH SINCERITY

"Dear God, I believe in you and that your Son, Jesus Christ, is Lord. I believe in His sacrifice for my sins and His resurrection from the dead. I repent and ask forgiveness for my sins and I'm deciding now to follow you. Please, come into my life through the gift of your Holy Spirit. It is in the Lord Jesus' name that I ask and receive, Amen."

    Be baptized

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

    PRAY:

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

My salvation testimony: I'm just going to tell the part you are interested in. I was into the Occult/Astrology for years. I wasn't saved in my heart anymore. My friend says "the Bible says this is wrong! and stomps out. All I can hear is the echo of her words. 1 Timothy 3:5

Jesus sent two visions to me. Revelation 1:18.

I saw him on a white horse. He stared right thru me and he wasn't smiling.

I read for an hour from the Bible about astrologers. It has a DEATH PENALTY. I laid my head on the Bible and said I deserve to die. Then I saw HELL in the 2nd vision. It is dense twisted roots, you can't move. It's dark, no light. Everything screams!

    Luke 16:19-31, Matthew 23:33

    Matthew 25:41-46

    Mark 9:43

Satan is real. He wants us dead, to hurt Jesus.

Don't go there. They don't sleep. Just scream!

Has anyone gone on YouTube and watched any of the Revelation Station videos of the Rapture and the Tribulation? You might have to type: revelation station Movie, to see it put together.

They are quite unlike the 1970's movies some of us old folks saw :D

Point is that 2 PETER 3, is going to happen. It's written, so it will happen.

The last video shows a short view of what Heaven might look like. Pretty populated too.

We may wonder why God wants to remake earth. For starters, we've pretty much polluted it to death. Our atmosphere and oceans, all dying.

So many satellites circling earth, they can hardly launch rockets for space exploration.

Our Government actually thinks Massive Amounts of taxpayer money can fix everything. They DONT read the Bible or else they would know GOD fully intends to do it Himself.

Luke 16:19-31 in this passage we see a parable of a rich selfish man that died; later wanted this beggar who had lived a miserable life believing in God. It shows that there is heaven and hell. People in hell are conscious, thirsty and miserable. They even pray for saved people to go witness to their unsaved family members, still living.

I don't think it's going to work out if you think by refusing to accept the end of this world as a hoax or some sick persons fantasy; that you can bypass reality with your interpretation. I'm sorry for you. We are here right now, trying to show you an easier way to live eternally in joy, happiness and purpose.

To truly understand the Kingdom of God you need to spend a good portion of you study in the Law and Prophets of the Old Testament.

Luke 16:31 And he said unto him, If they HEAR NOT MOSES and PROPHETS, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Acts 28:23 And when they had appointed him (Paul) a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the KINGDOM OF GOD, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
  • DIVORCE, WIDOWS AND REMARRIAGE - In Reply - 3 years ago
These are most of the scriptures on marriage and divorce. Since you are a widow, you can remarry. The only hindrances come when you marry a non-believer. They may hinder you going to church; or reading the Bible; holding hands and praying over dinner. Here goes:

    Matthew 5

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

    Commentaries:

    Wesley's Notes for Matthew 5:31

Let him give her a writing of divorce - Which the scribes and Pharisees allowed men to do on any trifling occasion. # Deut 24:1; Matt 19:7; Mark 10:2; Luke 16:18.

People's Bible Notes for Matthew 5:31

Mt 5:31,32 Whosoever shall put away his wife. The divorce laws were very lax among the Jews. A man could put away his wife "for any cause" ( Matthew 19:8). Moses directed a legal letter of divorcement ( Deuteronomy 24:1). Christ positively forbids divorce except for unchastity. Marriage is a divine institution, and the obligation is for life. Mt 19:3-9; Romans 7:1-3; 1 Corinthians 7:10-17

You can read these other scripture references also.

Winford, I know how you feel. Just don't give up. God does listen to all of our prayers. We can pray for others to be saved. Stir yourself up. Jesus came to seek and to save. This is for you, and all those with unsaved loved ones and friends.

You can keep someone lifted up in front of Gods throne. I believe these verses show that Gods thoughts toward us, can turn us back.

    Jeremiah 29

11 For I know the thoughts that I THINK toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

13 And ye shall seek me, and find Me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

I believe in the prayers of mothers and grandparents! My grandmother sent me love letters with scriptures, saying Jesus loves me, and so did she. I would remember those letters.

An angel woke me from hangover every morning saying: if you don't stop, you will leave your child without one parent.

Yes I believe in Prodigal sons and daughters. The Bible says he CAME TO HIS SENSES. He was face down fixing to eat hog food. He had nothing left except need. Every step on that road screamed defeat, stupid, loser! (The Accuser).

He made it to Daddy. ABBA.

I'm praying hard for some people who are the hardest heads and hearts I know. We have to shake Heaven with our prayers! I know some day I am going to receive a good report. I know it! I know it I know it!

Those altars they have in Israel are solid. I can see it in scripture. Well we need to grab on it, lay on it, soak it in tears, sleep beside it; wake up and shake Heaven again.

Did John the Baptist pray? (Red letters)

Matthew 11:12 ...the Kingdom of Heaven suffers Violence, and the Violent TAKE IT BY FORCE.

Jesus said that. IF we want to shake out a blessing; get with it. Grab onto the horns of that altar and give birth to a miracle.

    Deon,

Thanks for the response. I completely agree with you that Hades is not Hell. I also agree with your description of Hell. I used the word Hades because that's the word the Greek text uses. The word Hell in Luke 16:23 is the word Hades in the Greek text. There is actually only one place in the Bible that is actually Hell and that's the lake of fire in the book of Revelation, the final destination. In fact, Hades will be emptied out into the lake of fire. The word Hades means the place of unseen spirits. No physical body, just spirits.

Prior to the death of Christ on the cross, when a person died they went to a place called Hades. For the ones who will eventually be sent to Hell, they were on one side, and the saints waiting for the Messiah to come for their salvation were on the other. Scripture tells us that there was a great gulf fixed between the two compartments of Hades. No one could ever cross over from one side to the other. Today, there is only one compartment to Hades and it is full of those who are waiting for the final judgment, and they will then be cast into the lake of fire. There is no hope of salvation for them. Those who die rejecting Jesus Christ will no longer have a chance at salvation after death. Ephesians Chapter 4 tells us that when Jesus died that for three days and three nights He was in the heart of the earth. He was down setting the prisoners free. He was down in Hades on the side where the saints were with Abraham.

As a matter of fact, in Matthew Chapter 27 it tells us that when Jesus rose from the dead, many of the Old Testament saints were seen walking through the streets of Jerusalem because He the raised them up. He went down there and preached to them (the OT saints), and told them that their salvation has been purchased for them and they will now be with Him in paradise. These were the saints that were with Abraham.

I'm out of space here. Would you like me to address the second part, along with the verses you sent?
  • Deon - In Reply on 1 Peter 1 - 3 years ago
Responding to you mentioning Hades and releasing the saints.

    Luke 16:23

"And in Hell he lift up his eyes, (Note not hades) being in torments,"

Many counterfeits refuse to translate the Greek word "haides". Rather than translate "haides" to the word "hell", the counterfeit will transliterate the Greek word "haides" into the English "hades". By this trick the counterfeit attempts to extinguish the flames of hell. Hades is not "hell". Hell is flames, torments, weeping and wailing, complete darkness - forever. Hades is a new-age place of purification, or a fantasy place in Greek mythology. The Assyrian Hades is an abode of blessedness with silver skies called Happy Fields.

Then you also mentioned that Jesus went to release the other saints but the Bible says he went to minister to the lost souls.

    1 Peter 3: 18-22

During the 3 day's before his resurrection.

Christ descended to HELL to Preach to the lost souls in hell who rejected Christ in the day's of Noah.

The generation before and during Noahs time never had the Bible or scrolls of the Laws of God only the very rich and elect few had knowledge of the old time law's.

Because Christ said all will have a chance to repent and to get to now him personally.

    Romans 14:11

For it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God."

    Romans 10:14

How then will they call on Him (Jesus Christ) in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

    Trisha,

This may be a little long but I think what I have to share with you is important and might bring some comfort to your heart. I am going to break this up into hopefully two parts so please bear with me.

    Part 1:

My apology for not responding sooner. I am retired military and I still work for the military as a civilian. My day at work today has been a little crazy so I have not had a chance to respond. First off, I am so sorry to hear about you losing your dear sister. I know that has to be tough. The only comfort that can be found is in knowing that if she received Christ into her life, she is now with Him. I'll try my best here to explain why I believe we go to be with the Lord immediately after death.

When a person dies, their physical body is buried in the grave, but their spirit goes to be with the Lord. This was not the case before Jesus came. Their body was still buried, their spirit still departed the body, but they didn't go immediately to be with Jesus. Before Jesus came, when people died, their physical bodies were buried in the grave, but their spirit departed the body and went to a place that was divided into two sections, one for the Old Testament saints, and one for the lost. You can read about this in Luke 16:19-31.

Today this place still exists, but only now, there are no believers there, only the unsaved. There are no longer two sections there, but one. And that one section is only non-believers who have died without God in their lives. They will remain there until after the one-thousand year reign of Christ, and then they will be released during that resurrection, judged at what is called the Great White Throne Judgement, and then cast into the lake of fire. No believer will be at that judgment.

    I will continue with a Part 2....
  • Jesse - In Reply - 3 years ago
    Earl,

The word torment used in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus is the Greek word BASANOIS. The meaning from Greek to English would pretty much be the same as what we would understand torment to be. Whether it is mental anguish or physical torment, I think it can be both. It seemed to be both for the rich man. He seemed to be in a state of mental torment knowing that his family members (brothers) would soon be in this same place unless someone went to warn them. We also know that he was in physical torment, wanting the tip of his tongue to be cooled. Can you imagine that? Here is a man in physical torment and all he asks is for the tip of his tongue to be cooled. He didn't ask for someone to throw him a rope so he could get out!

We also know that there is a place of eternal torment called the lake of fire. To tell you how the word torment is used in other verses would take a tremendous amount of time and space. That's a huge favor. I don't mind sharing my understanding with you but I'm not sure I want to tackle that one. The short answer is that the word torment means pretty much the same in English as it does in Greek.

For the rich man in Hades, he's still in torment. One day he will be released, judged at the Great White Throne Judgement, and then cast into the lake of fire, a place of eternal torment.

Sorry I couldn't give you more. If you want the verses to look them up, here are the ones I found:

    Matthew 8:29, Mark 5:7, Luke 8:28, Luke 16:28, 1 John 4:18, Revelation 9:5, Revelation 14:11, Revelation 18:7, Revelation 18:10, Revelation 18:15

    Ron,

Many have different views on this and some defend them fiercely and interpret scripture to fit those views. This is not a salvation question so here are some things you may study for your own conscience; we all will face the death of this fleshly body and how you decide to face it is up to you. ( Psalm 6:5) ( Job 14:12-14) ( Job 17:13-16) ( Psalm 89:48) ( Psalm 115:17) ( Ecclesiastes 9:5-10)

There is a verse in ( 1 Timothy 4:7) to keep in mind, the actual Greek word used by Paul in this verse was "mythous", from which the English words myth and mythology come. In the actual Greek text of this verse, Paul further characterizes these fables as profane "bebelous". The King James Version of the Bible renders as "profane and old wives' tales".

Does scripture without man's interpretation back up a belief? ( Luke 16:19-31) is taught that we go to heaven or hell when we die. Questions to ask; What is the context of this chapter? Is this a parable or a reality? Is it backed up by other scripture or does it line up with Greek mythology?

What is our spirit? ( Psalm 104:29) ( Ecclesiastes 12:7) ( James 2:26). Spirit meaning wind, breath, spirit. When are we absent from our bodies? If we go to heaven when we die what is the meaning of ( 1 Corinthians 15:52-58)?

My personal understanding what scripture says is our spirit is our breath, and when we die it goes back to God who gave it, and our communication through the Holy Spirit stops until the resurrection,(sleep in Christ). And we being saved in Christ with the down payment/seal given by the Holy Spirit will be raised incorruptible in our new body and then we are absent from this fleshly body. But it is what you decide.

    God bless.

    Predestination is to the believer.

Here is what I believe a verse that gives the picture of Predestination.

Philippians 1:6. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

    And also here.

Luke 15:1-4. Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

    God bless.

James since the word of God is the will of God, His will, determination will be accomplished on earth as it is in heaven in Jeremiah 10:23 it is not within man to know what to do. So basically dead in trespasses and sin, also God by His will called out abraham, moses, samson, gideon, and many others that did his will obeyed his word most of the time, the greatest of course our lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who was born as Gospel of John 1:13 states born by the will of God and always did the fathers will.

Jeremiah 10:23 It is not within man to direct his own steps, thats pretty bad. Something to think about

Hi james look at Ephesians Chapter 1:4-12 as the word says he worketh all things after the council of His will, abraham his will, moses his will, obviously Jesus Christ his will, Paul in due time 2 Corinthians 1:1 Gods will. Last in 2 Timothy 2:4 it is gods will that all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. The last part is whats available that does not mean all will believe. Something to think about.

Brother James, may CHRIST IN US grace us with HIS wisdom and HIS understanding.

Matthew 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables, and without a PARABLE SPAKE HE NOT unto them:

All the bible is the WORDS OF JESUS; according to Jesus all the Bible is a PARABLE.

Jesus walked three and a half years with his disciples, and they never understood a word he said, until he took them aside and explained it to them.

We TODAY can't understand the words, until the HOLY SPIRIT takes us aside and explains the meaning to us.

You are BORN AGAIN by the word (truth) of God.

Can two walk together (in the word) and not be AGREED.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Sometimes people spend their time trying to prove someone else is wrong (must be worried) not leading others to believe in being (born again - new creature), (repentance - turn), faith - hope - charity. Heaven is real, (Hell - lake of fire is real Luke 16:23) Eternity is never ending. Mark 9:44, Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

In one of the responses to a question the person responding said LK 16 is a parable. Where did he get that information. In the text it does not say it is a parable

In reply to Adam's, "... I personally do not believe people go to the Lord upon death, but sleep until judgment day, based on scriptures I've read....." I wish to point out that Jesus Himself told us what happens to ALL people upon death, Luke 16:19-31 AND ESPECIALY the rich man's request to send Lazarus to his father's house to preach the Gospel BUT Abraham rebukes and responds that they would not believe a simple beggar EVEN THOUGH he knew the truth and died in it. Bible students believe the rich man was not named because the people at that time knew him before his death. Jesus would not speak these things if they were not true. He wants us to be content and with HOPE (not a wish but rather a firm belief) in death. If the rich man was able to identify Lazarus across v26: "... a great gulf fixed.." then I believe Lazarus was also able to identify friends and family on BOTH SIDES of the "gulf", ALL waiting for the final judgement, Revelation 20:11, "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them." AND Revelation 20:15, "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." - this is the SECOND DEATH, it is eternal. For as long as we will be with Christ, so they will be with satan (his name is not worthy to qualify for the capitalization of the s). Amen.
