    Verse 51 reminds me of Christ's instructions in Matthew 10:12-15:
    12 And when ye come into an house, salute it.

    13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

    14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

    15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

    How do we receive the word of God? Do we select what we want to hear or receive it with gladness?

    Many people vehemently oppose the Gospel. There are many times when someone becomes a Christian their friends and sometimes even family will mock them. In muslim countries, people have even turned over their own family members who are then imprisoned for becoming a Christian.

  • Nicky on Matthew 10:36 - 11 years ago
    It is rather sad that one's own family members would be their enemies, but I understand this to be true. Even more, I think it is important that all understand that the "household" does not solely mean those that live under the same roof (whether immediate or extended family members)but also those that are closest to you.

    David,
    I believe it was to simply clarify which James he was talking about. After all, there were two other James among the twelve apostles, James the Son of Zebedee and James the son of Alphaeus. See Matthew 10:2-4. Perhaps Paul could have called him James the son of Joseph, but when he mentioned him as James the Lord’s brother, there was no mistaking which James he was referring to.

    As evident from his last word,"it is finished",his purpose was indeed.We either let our saviour to die or tortured him to death.This is how He bring sword to earth or in other words this is how we let the sword to came in.
    Above all,He is the light;emblem of peace & love.At the same time one has to have the faith, which ask for the courage.The act He was seeking when He was being crucified.

    If Eternally is appreciated as the timeless Always, then indeed you are eternally free to lose in self seeking or be embraced in truly unified Will. As ye sow ye ARE reaping. As ye forgive-release ye ARE forgiven-released.

    God Speaks through Jesus as 'ME' as the 'I Am'. for Jesus sought NOT his OWN life but is FOUND in the Life of the Father, One. This demonstration is the Good News. Go ye and do likewise is Jesus' Call to Joy - and NOT to sacrifice of anything but self-illusion.

    The tenant farmers parable represents the mind that thinks IT is given free will to usurp their Master's Estate, that IT should determine all things according to ITS survival in ITS terms - and denied or killed the Messengers of the Master.
    This 'consciousness' is but a mind in hiding from its Self that knows not what it does - and it is this that we are called to forgive ourselves for. Them who trespass against us reflects our own hidden self-rejections. But if we delight in their exclusion, we 'sin' by maintaining our own wilfully disguised suffering as proof of 'evil' by which God's Love is denied and our 'tiny' will persists in presenting a self existence that may appeal to love and mimic the forms of love - yet have no love to share.
    Unless a living love heals our heart, we see all things through a glass darkly... including Scripture. There is no fear in living love. All interpretations of a fearful nature are fearful propaganda to persist as a power of fearful control in a fearful world as a fearful self!
    Jesus came not to usurp love's sharing, but to illuminate its true power in all.

    This is our Jesus showing to us the power He has over sickness,demons,leprosy, the dead and everything on this earth and at His name everything bow and confess that He is Lord over everything.May His name be praised. Amen.

    I think Matt:10-39 means what it says,you have two choices you can hold onto your carnal self centered Adam nature and perish with the world or you can submit yourself to the Holy Ghost and allow him to break your stubborn self will that the Lord can use you, and you will live. the problem today is most christians today have been taught that they need not suffer Jesus did it for them on the cross.
  • Alex on Matthew 10 - 11 years ago
    In Matthew 10;1 the Bible clearly states that God has already given us the power to heal the sick but when most of us pray we ask God to do what he said should be done by us.God is not going to heal any people now because He has already done it 2000 yrs ago

    Oh I forgot to tell JOE V. about confession in verse 32 of Matthew 10. Perhaps this scripture will help ( I Timothy 2:5) also read ( Hebrews 4:12-16) ( I John 1:9). As for as verse 32 is concern I think here He's talking about our personal witness as a follower of Jesus Christ; we should be bold in our witness, and never ashamed of our true confession as a born again believer in our Lord Jesus Christ Amen? hope this helps. Love You with the Love of Christ!
  • Joe V on Matthew 10:32 - 11 years ago
    The other day, my wife and her brother were discussing confession. I am a catholic and I was taught that confession was good so our sins can be forgiven. The debate went back and forth as she needs to go to church so she can go to confession. The debate started to turn into an argument and they tried to bring me in as to who is right or wrong. I am far from being a scholar in theology so I just stated that I don't know the answer. I did a little research to find Matthew 10:32. As I read this paragraph, I realized that confess is to give public acknowledgment of your faith and not specifically to confessing your sins. I tactfully want to tell my brother-in-law that my wife can confess her sins to Jesus in a private manner, is this sufficient to forgive your sins ? Among family, she tell them she love Jesus and God, is this sufficient to meet the confession requirement ?

    This will let you know that the only fear that is healthy is to fear God respect other things but truly fear God alone not the devil who is in Gods hands you will be wise to know that God is the only true power and he is good thank Lord Jesus he is

  • Paul sweezea on Matthew 3:5 - 11 years ago
    The problem is, each gospel that mentions this says all. Peter tells them in Acts 2 repent and be baptized everyone of you for the remission of sins, this salvation that is being required is a national salvation for Israel, that would have facilitated the immediate step into the tribulation period, and finally Jesus the Messiahs return to Israel as king. See Mark 1:5, and Acts 2:38, We cannot pass over Matthew 10:23; But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. vs 22 sets post ascension period.

    Well, it’s certainly true in my case; absolutely! And for either side of the coin: for believers, or non-believers alike Christian or non-Christian.
  • Nora on Matthew 10:34 - 11 years ago
    The sword Jesus is talking about is Islam, that will come on us all even in Jeremiah the sword that’s to come on all nations and evil, we all will be divided because of our family or so on converting to Islam or Muslims converting to Christianity. I and my Muslim husband are divided because of the sword Islam, so there will be no peace ever until the lord returns. Whatsoever no peace; Muslims are taking our families to Islam, while Muslims are coming to Christ. We are divided as we are in the last days, now all things are bad. We have all been turned from each other over wickedness, but thanks Jesus, as I myself was converting to Islam, but he called me out by dreams. Thank you Jesus for not giving me to their hands. Now the sword will be here growing up and up while Christianity will vanish. That’s why Jesus sheep or a little flock, a man’s own household will become his own enemies which Jesus said, and yes true, me and my kids are followers of Christ but my husband Muslim; so we are divided. Just like Muslims convert to Christ are divided with their families. All in Jesus’ name for his name, but those who will hang until the end the same shall be saved amen. God bless.

    I think it seems to have some conflicting statements but however we know that the bible never contradicts itself, it’s just our level of understanding. Also I see Matthew 10 telling us what to expect from family members and those close to us when we accept God's way. Surely we know that as soon as we start our Christian journey, Satan will use anyone to come against us. This is the conclusion of the matter. ''THERE'S A WAR GOING ON'' between GOOD and the devil.

    Verses 51-53
    1. Simply stated Doctor Luke, through the leadership of the holy spirit, is verifying the fact of being a born again believer who has made a commitment to follow and obey the holy scriptures;
    2. This commitment will cause (cost) division not only among strangers, friends, distant relatives, but also those family members of your own immediate family that do not or have not made the same commitment that we true believers have made;
    3. This is one of several draw backs of being saved later in life rather than being raised in a bible believing, separated family;
    4. In the book of Matthew, Jesus likens the division to a sword ( Matthew 10:34-39);
    5. This is usually a difficult path to trek, but trek we must if we are going to please our heavenly father.
  • Jay on Matthew 10 - 12 years ago
    @Karen,
    The answer to verse 35 is found in verse 36 when a person comes to know and receive Jesus as their personal savior and comes to the understanding of the absolute truth in God’s holy word, you will begin to experience (sad to say) the variances of faith within your own family and friends if they have not come to the same understanding of truth as you have. Look up the word variance!
  • Franki b on Matthew 10 - 12 years ago
    Matthew 10:35, I am come to set a man at variance against his father. This was not the Savior's object, but the effect. The conversion of individual members of the family would cause variance. In nearly all quarrels, except those about religion, the members of the same family stand together, but in religious feuds the family circle is often broken and its parts arrayed against each other.
