Jesus referred to Peter as Petros meaning small stone, and then Jesus stated, upon this rock meaning Petra , which is a massive rock, will I build my church . In other words, Christ was not making Peter the foundation because to do so will be detrimental to the kingdom, because of man s instability. However, when Peter stated that Thou art the Christ Jesus rewarded him by stating that he is Peter which is a small rock connecting all those whom he come in contact with to the rock Petra , which is a massive rock which is Christ himself. For Christ is the foundation according to 1 Corinthians 3 11. This connection will be done through Peter s testimony of Jesus being the Christ. So, therefore for I believe Jesus was letting Peter know that he will build his church upon the testimony of Peter which states, thou art the Christ . When we all have Peter s testimony that Jesus is the Christ, we will also become Petros a small stone adding to the church, for every saint is a stone according to 1 Peter 2 5 .

Many church goers do not embrace the fact that we have authority to proclaim that the power we possess comes from the risen Savior Jesus the Christ. We are to construct our daily sojourn on fact and not just idol words, but words that have accent on eternity. Government would have us to think that separation of church and state is to divide, and show or reveal that our authority or power to build is in the hands of those that fail to acknowledge Jesus as the first source to seek above all.

Verse 18 Jesus calls Simon Rock Petras in the Septuagint Greek which is itself a translation of the older Aramaic. Look at the subsequent commission Jesus tells Peter that the gates of hell will not prevail against it. And whatever you declare bound on earth is bound in heaven and whatever thou looses on earth will be loosed in heaven. A rebuke followed by giving such authority or a commission followed by giving authority? Sounds like authority. The same authority with which successors approved the Christian Bible around 389 AD. No authority no Bible. Jesus ' authority given to the Apostles, given to their successors who had authority to approve the Bible of 389 AD. What authority the New Testament has is derived from Jesus bestowing authority to his Apostles. And the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.

It really tells us not to worry if we are not rich but be happy of what we got in our hands to survive As long as we accept Jesus in our life and have happiness in our family then that is it rather than being rich and end up in hell

On verse 18 don't slide into the sand ( Matt 7:26). Peter is "A stone" ( Jn 1:42) not "this rock". Jesus said in ( Jn 2:19) "this temple" and "he spake of the temple of his body" look at verse 21! The Jews missed that like people do today when they read "this rock" in Matt 16:18. Christ is the Rock ( Ps 62:2,1 Cor 10:4, 2 Sam 22.2, etc.) Please don't get the wrong Rock. (Deu 32:31) For their rock is not as our Rock!

even in Jesus day there was much false doctrine,we must study the word of God,because there's just one way, the Holy Spirit does the teaching,he will reveal false doctrine, the most important teaching of all is salvation, Romans 3:23, 5:12,6:23,10:9,10,13. John 1:12, Acts2:41

...they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom is also related to Mathew 26:29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. It is not the second coming of Jesus in the judgement day but it refers to the Church of God build upon the rock,in Mathew 16:18. This is the Kingdom of God mentioned in a prayer that ....thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.(Daniuel 5:21 & Daniel 2:44) It is a true church found in the Bible by which the gates of hell shall not prevail. 2nd Cor. 1:1; 1 Cor. 1:1-2
  • Isha on Matthew 16:28 - 11 years ago
Luke 9: 27-36 and Mark 9:1-9 answers Matt. 16:28 in that this was fulfilled six days afterwards where Peter, James, and John ("some standing here") got to witness Jesus coming (Strongs G2064 verb used for BOTH arriving and returning ALSO metaphor for SHOWING ITSELF)i.e Jesus SHOWING HIMSELF/REVEALED IN TRANSFIGURATION with Moses and Elijah on the Mountain.
ALSO, biblically, the meaning of 'the kingdom of G-d' FAR MORE THAN the elementary idea of a physical gov't.

(This is my response to Dom Di Stroia's comment 8/12/2013 at 4:47pm on Acts Chapter 9):

Our Lord Jesus Christ was saying upon "THIS ROCK" I will build "MY CHURCH" ( Matthew 16:18). That spiritual "ROCK" was "CHRIST" ( 1 Corinthians 10:4). Therefore, HE meant to say upon "MYSELF" I will build "MY CHURCH". That Church which He built is none other but the "HOUSE of GOD", which is the "CHURCH of the LIVING GOD", the "PILLAR and GROUND of the TRUTH" ( 1Timothy 3:15). That "TRUTH" is our "LORD JESUS CHRIST" ( John 14:6). That "TRUTH" is the "WORD" of GOD ( John 17:17). That "WORD" was "MADE FLESH" ( John 1:14). But "BEFORE" the "WORD" was "MADE FLESH" HE "was" "GOD" ( John 1:1). If you understand the greatness of the "MYSTERY" of His "GODLINESS" ( 1Timothy 3:16) therefore there is no doubt that you belong to the "CHURCH" that "JESUS CHRIST" built upon "HIMSELF" because you also believe the "TRUTH". It was written in In Colossians 3:1-2, "If ye then be "RISEN" with "CHRIST", seek those things which are "ABOVE", where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things "ABOVE", not on things on the earth.

For anger, pain, bitterness to get thru, there is a channel or gate they use. For example, a boss at work can be an instrument the devil uses to make one annoyed through unnecessary shouting.

    Simon means Unstable, like sand!
Peter means Stable, like a Rock!

Jesus said, Thou art Peter (Stable, Rock) and upon "THIS" Rock I will build My Church.

Jesus is saying, "I cant build My church on people that are unsure, doubters, unstable, unconfident, ....But I will build My Church on those that are Sure, Stable, Committed, Confident of the very thing!!!

    Just my thoughts!

The Holy Spirit is what we call a possessive adjective. There's only one way of saying a possessive adjective in the Old Testament times. The Spirit of the Lord. The Spirit of God. The spirit of Elijah. The day of the Lord. But, there are two ways of saying the same thing in the Greek, that is: the Spirit of the Lord or the Lord's spirit. The Spirit of God or God's spirit. The spirit of Elijah just Elijah's spirit. The day of the Lord or the Lord's Day. When it comes to gender there are two genders, masculine and feminine. There are there no neuter gender. However, in English, there are three genders. Let's look at a sripture. Matthew 16:18 "And I also say to you that you are Peter on this rock I will build my Church the forces of Hades will not overpower it." Most people are not able to read the Greek so I will call attention to a Spanish version. If you look into the equivalent Spanish version it will say in the last part of verse "y las puertas del Hades no prevaleceran contra ella." That means "The gates of Hell will not prevail against her." the same thing happens in the Greek. The church takes on a feminine ending.the The translators change all the feminine and masculine endings on any neuter gender that they knew were inanimate objects to "it." However, when they came to the Holy Spirit they left the gender the same and capitalize the word Holy Spirit. Luke 3:22 says, "John saw God's Spirit descending like a dove and resting up in Jesus." Matthew 3:11 says, "I baptize you with water but one who is more powerful than I is coming and he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." You don't want to be baptized with a person but you want to be baptized with the power and your spiritual essence of that person: the spirit and power of Almighty God. Denounce the doctrine of the Trinity. It is false doctrine. It is polytheism. I have been to Bible College and was taught this doctrine of the Trinity, but the Bible does not teach it. So, I dumped it.

  • Rev. Autrey on Matthew 16 - 11 years ago
Jesus asked the question, "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of God." The word Christ or the anointed one had a special meaning to the Jews. They knew it to mean God Himself, who would come and deliver his people from their enemies. "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village in Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past." "And he will stand to lead his flock with the Lord's strength. ..." ( Micah 5)

Isiah said of him, "For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God. ..." ( Isaiah 9:6)

Don't be confused by the term "Son of God." It is just the way God spoke of himself when he was born as a human.

So the good news is, God has come to save his people. And his name is Jesus the Christ.

I think you're making a tortured explanation of a straightforward prophecy that turned out to be wrong.
    ...Unless there's a 2,000-year-old guy walking around.
"Kingdom" means "kingdom." Don't get metaphorical all of a sudden, if you take the rest of the Bible literally.

Father, We come to you in the Mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we asked that you would bless us with the strength, and the power to let go of this life, and bless are focus, to be, and to remain on doing and completing your will, just like Christ...... Grant us the spirit of faithfulness, and fill our hearts with true Love, for our neighbor.

Prepare us, and keep us denying ourselves, that our minds be not on the things of this world, but on the glory of God, and the Kingdom of Heaven........

Keep our tongues from speaking evil to our brothern, and bless our hearts from being able to hold on to any offences.

We invite you into are lives, and our hearts, and ask you, if you would drive for us; For we declare that you are the better driver than us, and that we want you, and that we can not make it to you, without you driving for us............. We want to be right Father; We don't want to be wrong.

Save us and hear our humble cry, and everyone who agrees, Say Amen!!!

  • Pat on Matthew 24:14 - 11 years ago
A kingdom is a government. God's kingdom is in heaven. Matthew 16:19 "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Daniel 2:44 " And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever." The previous kingdoms refer to the world powers that are ending, soon to be replaced by God's kingdom. God's heavenly government will bring peace to the earth. Isaiah 2:4 "And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." Only God's government can bring peace.
