Matthew 18:18, notice Matthew 18:15-22, in context Matthew 18, look closely when reading loosed again Matthew 18:27,

Looking up Matthew 18:18, in word breakdown in Strongs Exhaustive Concordance reference at bottom of page, "bind" translated 'deo' can mean pledge, marriage, or be in bonds, = Luke 13:16, context Luke 13, "loosed" translated 'luo' = break, destroy, dissolve, divorce

both scriptures same words, in Greek.

In the Old Testament, Daniel 3:5, "loose" translated 'shre' = to free, separate, unravel ( Thayer's Greek Lexicon a reference also in site, I use for comparison)

    James 1:5,

    Hopefully helpful in your study

    Hi Donna.

We also see this mentioned in Matthew 16:18-19. "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

    To answer your question.

Let's take it from vs 15 of Matthew 18:15-18 'Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

( If a person wrongs another, and refuses to repent, that person who was wronged should return with one or two others and then take the issue to the church or assembly. If repentance never happens, that person should be treated as an outsider.)

The offender is binded by that offense if he doesn't repent.

If the offender does repent he will be loosed.

This is the keys mentioned in Matthew 16:19 "AND I WILL GIVE UNTO THEE THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN:" and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

To bind and to loose means

to forbid by an indisputable authority and to permit by an indisputable authority.

    Bind=forbid.

    loose=Permit.

    I hope this helps.

    God bless.

The reason a higher % of youth are deciding they're gay, trans, or whatever, is because they're psychologically groomed by motivated parents and teachers. They're pushed in that direction and rewarded if they say those magic words, and discouraged and and pressured if they're not. For example, wearing certain clothes or dressing up as a 2 year old means nothing in terms of a sexual identity. They're only two! They don't know about sex and don't care. They're kids playing. Most people don't even remember anything from that age.

Harsh judgment will come on any adults who groom their kids to think sexually or perverse or about disgusting sinful unnatural things. What we're seeing in the current evil society is people increasingly committing child abuse in the open and forcing others to accept that. People in society are even starting to push pedophilia and trying to normalize that. Obviously these sick evils are not from God, they are from satan. No, God rejects immorality of the world and so should Christians. One of satan's greatest lies is that people are born a certain way and therefore feel entitled to sin. That's really clever and a lot of people started believing it, but it's still a lie. Nowadays a child sees a colorful piece of clothing and puts it on and plays around and the parent is immediately ready to cut the child's body parts off- almost like offering their child as a sacrifice to a false god of the evil woke world. God is watching all of this evil unfold and many people will weep with regret if they keep turning from Him and following the world.

Matthew 18:6 "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."

Hello Bob. The Greek word for 'Church' (as in Matthew 18:17), is "ekklesia", which applies to a Church congregation, or even an assembly of people.

In Acts 19:38,39, we read, "Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful ASSEMBLY (ekklesia)." So here, we see the other use of the word, which the Bible translators correctly understood as not applying to the 'Church', but to a non-Church (legal) assembly.

But in Matthew chapter 18, Jesus is speaking to His disciples (verse 1), so as GiGi has shared, it can be accurately understood that this discourse given by Him, was a little insight to the future, i.e. in the administration of His Church, or Assembly, as the Holy Spirit had (or, was given) control & believers were added to it. When we look at this chapter, advice on conversion, humility, sin, conflict between the brethren & prayer are the topics the Lord brings up. Even as the Lord spoke to Peter in Matthew 16:18, that "upon this rock (the body of Truth) I will build my ekklesia".

Hi Bob, I believe that the N.T. church of believers in Jesus began when Jesus began His public ministry at His baptism. Pentecost is often thought of the "birthday of the church" but I think of Pentecost as the event that empowered the apostles and disciples to begin their outward ministry to preach and bring the Gospel they already believed to the uttermost parts of the word as Jesus had commanded them (as believers) in Matt. 28:19 and in Acts 1. Jesus is the beginning of the Church of God.
  • Bob (Whosoever Jn.3:16) on Matthew 18 - 2 years ago
What church is Jesus referring to in verse 17, if His church was 1st established on Shauvout i.e. The Day Of Pentecost as recorded in the book of Acts when The Holy Spirit filled the 120 believers/followers gathered together in the upper room in Jerusalem after He (Jesus) had risen from the dead?

Or should the word church recorded here by Jesus in verse 17 have another interpretation, such as synagogue etc?

Or is the word church mentioned here the correct litteral interpretation?

THINK ABOUT IT? This came to my attention this a.m. on 12/15/2022.

Hello Peggy. You could look up the following Scriptures on Jesus Christ's Deity (i.e. God's fullness found in Jesus ( Colossians 2:9) & in His Holy Spirit). Jesus' Deity is proved by:

    a. His Names: Hebrews 1:8, John 20:28 (God); Matthew 16:16, Matthew 26:61-65 (the Son of God); Matthew 22:41-46 (Lord); Revelation 19:13 (Word of God); Revelation 19:16 (King of kings and Lord of lords).

    b. His Characteristics: Matthew 28:18 (Omnipotence: all powerful); Luke 6:8, John 2:24,25, John 13:11 (Omniscience: all knowing); Matthew 18:20 (Omnipresence: present in any place); John 1:4 (Life); John 14:6 (Truth); Hebrews 13:8 (Immutability: unchanging); 1 Timothy 3:16, John 1:1-14 (God manifest in the flesh in Jesus).

    c. His Works: John 1:3, Colossians 1:16 (creates); Colossians 1:17 (sustains); Luke 7:48,49 (forgives sin); John 11:41-44 (raises the dead); John 5:27 (judges); John 15:26 (sends the Holy Spirit).

    d. His receiving Worship: Hebrews 1:6 (from angels); Revelation 5:11-13 (from other heavenly beings); Matthew 14:33 (from men); Philippians 2:10 (from all).

    e. His equality within the Triune God: John 14:23, John 10:30-33 (with the Father); Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14 (with the Father and the Spirit).

I hope you can see from these few Scriptures that Jesus was not just a special Man or Prophet sent by God, but truly was "God manifested in the flesh". No other man before Jesus' coming, during, or after His leaving this Earth, could ever fully reflect God's Glory, Wisdom & Power. Only God could - and He did this by sending us His Word, made Him a Man, so that He could give His Life as full payment for our sins - but only to those who believe this & place their trust in Him. To some, the 'Trinity' teaching is abominable. But man's salvation depends on the Divine Person of the Lord Jesus Christ - that God could accept no other Sacrifice to redeem & secure people to Himself - only by giving fully of Himself, which is true love for all.

Matthew 16, if you read the following chapter: Matthew 18, this should help you understand deeper,

    note, Matthew 18:18-20,

the word bind & bound is- "deo" Greek, as per Strongs Exhaustive Concordance = to bind, be bound,

Loosed - "Luo" Greek, also in Strongs Exhaustive Concordance, = to loosen, break, destroy, dissolve,

Luke 13:16, this is a great example. It appears as believers, we have been given authority to make rulings, set free, etc. James 1:5, Mark 13:34, Matthew 28:18,19, John 16:23-28

    Hopefully these are helpful

That; I suppose is an advantage of this type of venue; where no one knows who anyone else really is (unless for some divine purpose someone living in our town is discovered who we happen to run into-would be interesting if I was discussing this blog with someone here in Philly and they said yeah I'm the one who is so and so who read your blog last week).

That being said; of course we are all more shallow in this way without personal contact and fellowship at best. The concept of "confessing our sins to one another" is scriptural. The context certainly applies to when we have offended someone and we are to make it right before offering sacrifice (which I would say is equivalent to Communion or any public worship for that matter). It is also good to have those we are accountable to. Obviously men should be discipling men; women with women. That is another matter; as to how women not only in churches but online forums may try to go beyond discussions and start playing the role of Pastor. It is a touchy issue which I won't delve into any more here.

We need not only to be aware of gossip within the church but about our leaders and any non believers as well. Certain things are known as to transgressions in the public arena but unless we hold it up in prayer it is better to keep quiet. It reminds us of the verse about judging others. Most don't look at the other side of it; we WOULD want mercy to triumph over judgment so we should use that approach with others. That concept is seen in Matthew 18:15-35. We should be ready to forgive our brother and be transparent when we can. Obviously some things are private and certainly a trusted person should be our confidante as it were.

Sadly; the lack of exhortation in churches today and having real conversations make the concept of "iron sharpening iron" a rare concept. The wounds of a friend somehow aren't appreciated ( Proverbs 27:6) with today's shallow associations that result from cliques that gossip.

People accused Jesus of going to eat dinner at the house of a "tax collector." Luke 19:1-10. Jesus spent time with an "adulteress" John 4. He spent much of His ministry around "sinners." We're all sinners.

But yes, there are verses supporting avoiding people and avoiding trouble. Jesus fled to avoid being arrested/beaten, before it was His time. He left people to be alone to pray. He said He wasn't respected in His own town with His own family. It says this about not being welcomed: Luke 9:5. It says avoid foolish arguments Titus 3:9-11 and avoid divisive people or heretics. It says this specifically about Christians ( Matthew 18:16-17) when confronting about an issue like sin. So it seems the answer is it depends.

Found this page too which might have more verses: Link God bless.

    Hello Trin,

The verse in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 tells us to abstain from every form of evil (or even the appearance of evil in some translations). When we were new parents, we took this verse seriously for the raising of our children. We just couldn't bear the thought of purposely introducing them to evil or causing them to engage in evil. We were very conscious of Jesus' words concerning causing a child to stumble (that it would be better for us to tie a millstone around our necks and be drowned in the sea). ( Matthew 18:6)

So, we would not let them have anything to do with witches, sorcery, magic, evil depictions of occultic characters, etc. in what we read to them or what they viewed. We did not let them act out scenario's as any of these identities. It was sometimes tough when neighbors and such would engage in such play and they would not be able to do so. It was uncomfortable for me to explain to these kids parents why we do not engage in such things. My kids eventually grew to resent that we took a hard stance on this. Nevertheless, we knew we would be required to give an account to God for our parenting. We do not regret our choices on this matter. We do believe that eventually our sons will understand how right we were when they come back around from being prodigals and then parent the children God will give them.

It is not always easy nor popular to do things God's way and avoid the things He says to avoid. Evil is the main thing we are to avoid because it is deadly to those who participate in it in any way. Obedience to God is what we were made to do. He deserves it from us. We should love good as He does and hate evil as He does. This is a big part of what it means to be Christ-like.

Hear our cry Lord Jesus Christ, we know that in You, in Your name and the change of and being born again can change a whole life. And we give You much thank for that, Lord. Thank You for doing something new in "Anynomous" life. Thank you, dear Jesus Christ, in Your name we can ask for anything, and God Himself will answer prayers according to His will, Amen.

Events seem to be GOD's timing = Noah Genesis 6,7, Abraham 14 generations, to David as references in Matthew 1:17, including within those 400+ years in Egypt, Abraham himself being old before birth of Isaac. & Genesis 15:16.

    Revelation 6:9,10,11, Revelation 17:14-17, James 5:7,

it appears to me that the final martyr of GOD's beloved, will ignite. Like the other events in the written Word.

As a loving Father, HE appears to be balancing the mercy of HIS will, that none should perish of the people; Matthew 18:14, 2Peter 3:1-18, & mercy for HIS children, Hebrews 11:6-40,

Jesus speaking in context : Mark 10:13-31, notice he started with the little children that were being pushed aside._.. Notice too he says many not all. Luke 18:17, Mark 10:15,

Giannis says Israel, that seems very contradictory to the WORD: Romans 11, whole chapter. Notice, Luke 13:22-35, note Luke 13:27, iniquity, Matthew 7, Matthew 25:31-46, Isaiah 48:12, Matthew 24:48-51,

Matthew 20:1-16, again arrogance & expecting more reward than another? Again if you go back a little in context Jesus is telling them don't forbid the children to come to Him. Matthew 19:14, continued the same event follows. Matthew 19:14-30, so Matthew 20, is repeating the teaching of 1st, & last; meekness, in another perspective same teaching. Matthew 10:22,24,25,42, Matthew 10:5-42, Mark 9:35, Mark 10:44, Matthew 20:27, Matthew 18:3,4,5,

    Hopefully these are helpful

What is a church? It is Christ-followers or the "body of Christ". It may be all followers on Earth, or a subset, regional group, local group, ministry group, study group, or even 2 or 3 people as indicated by Matthew 18:20. People can and do belong to multiple church groups, formally or informally. The church is made up of individuals. Each individual is fully responsible for his or her own actions including choosing to follow Christ and choosing to do what He says. There is Biblical support for those who teach to have a higher burden of responsibility, but I do not believe they are directly responsible for others' choices and salvation.

In any organization of people the larger it gets it encourages corruption, including sin. We have seen this play out plenty of times with megachurches who may have started well but went astray. Similar to government waste, church organizations can become wasteful, lose their purpose, and become and unhealthy and toxic places. So, I think its prudent for people to use discernment and put their faith, trust and hope in God, not in an organization of people who still wrestle with sin. Their attending church should be for the right motives and not because someone is hitting them over the head with a bat guilt and shame. There is also risk if too much attention is put on an organization instead of a personal walk with Christ, that someone's faith might transform into a ritualistic religion tied to that entity's specific rites and rituals.

Matthew 12:50 is an interesting quote by Jesus about who is His brother and mother.
