I am confused the end of chapter 1 it says Joseph knew her not until she had brought forth her newborn son Jesus. what does that mean he knoew her not?

Matthew 1:16 in greek was a typographical error according to the original Hebrew script by Matthew. According to the original text written by Matthew, Matthew 1:16 must be as in "And Jacob begat Joseph the father of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.", not husband of Mary. From what I understand, both the natural line (traceable) in Luke 3, and the royal line (traceable)of Matt. 1, are linked directly to Jesus Christ. Mary was in the natural line but because women were not reckoned in genealogies, Joseph the legal sin of Heli took Mary’s place from Jesus back to Adam. The royal line in Matthew 1 is thru Joseph back to Abraham.
