much in so little.
I totally agree with you on the word "debt" or "debtors" used in the our Fathers prayer. Making you kind of think it's of monetary matters. As when I pray to our Fathers I state "Forgive us of all our sins, trespasses, and iniquities". As my heart, and the Holy Spirit, have lead me to say this instead of just "debts" as is written.
The thing is that the KJV Bible from 1611 originally had the words "debt" and "debtors" in the prayer. Link The Greek word is "opeheilema" with the Strongs definition of "something owed that is (figuratively) a due .; morally a fault".
Then right after the prayer in Matthew 6:14-15 it states about forgiving others their "trespasses". The word for "trespasses" is another Greek word "paraptoma" with the Strongs definition "a side slip (lapse or deviation) that is (unintentional) error or (wilful) transgression". Also to be known as a sin or misdeed. The other Greek word can also be taken as sin or offense.
I agree with you about how using the word "debt" in the prayer doesn't really feel right. Although that was the original word used from the year 1611 in the KJV Bible.
Hope that helps clear up that the KJV Bible has not been changed. God Bless.
On Matthew 6:12 - why do you say debt and debtor and no longer trespass and trespasses? "Forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us," has meaning and inspiration. It inspires someone (like me) to really think of what it means to keep holding onto bad thoughts or grudges against another while I am asking God to forgive me. How can I ask for forgiveness when I am not giving it? Trespass/trespasses causes me to open my heart and mind and to seek to love others as Christ loves me. Whereas, the words "debts and debtors" inspire me to think of monetary matters. As Jesus tells us "money is the root of all evil," I find myself dismayed and turned off by any Bible which has removed trespass and replaced it with debt. It is especially hurtful to see this happen in a King James Bible. I was holding out hope that with all the false teachings and false Bibles in the world today, the King James Bible would remain true to the word of God.
"I'm in need of learning to pray better " What is lacking in your prayers? I spoke once with a brother in Christ who said
he didn't know enough of the Bible to pray better. What he meant was, he didn't remember passages verbatim, with book, chapters and verses. As Christ taught us, a prayer is not a repitition of words( Matthew 6:7). Even what the Lord said is disregarded in that some people repeat his words as a prayer itself. Instead Jesus spoke of a manner of prayer, in which he spoke of the matters on his heart. Therein is what God wants to hear from us, the matters on our heart. I hear you saying you do that already, what more would make your prayers better?
Chuck the "dynamite teacher" has been an encouragement to you and we all have someone who has taught us in the things of God. Their words and mannerisms stick with us as a vital part of our learning. It is great to be on the receiving side of people who have dug out the gems in the mine of God's word. As we grow in grace we should be miners ourselves and in our turn pass on gems, you can and will also. Your prayer for God to touch us with his love and grant us comfort and peace is very much appreciated, thank you sister. I will remember you in prayer also as a dear sister in Christ who prays from her heart.
Though I think that from your experience the Lord's sees your conviction over this matter & the lesson you've learned, so that God's blessings will be multiplied to you for your consideration of others in the future. Blessings.
If so, then I am already falling short of God's glory. I did a good deed a while back and I went and told almost everyone about it. I suppose I should repent for this. Great lesson Jesus gave here.
. . . Does that mean that we actually have to get persecuted?
Most things in God's word have to be discerned by applying multiple scriptures and all applied against:
1 John 2:27 But the anointing (Holy Ghost in you) which ye have received (by grace) of him (Holy Ghost) abideth in you, and you NEED NOT THAT ANY MAN TEACH YOU; but as the same anointing (the Holy Ghost) teacheth you ALL things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it (the Holy Ghost) hath taught you, ye shall abide (become one) in him (the Holy Ghost).
Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have HEARD him (the Holy Ghost), and have been taught by him (the Holy Ghost), as the truth is in Jesus (THE WORD OF GOD).
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by HEARING, and HEARING by the WORD OF GOD (studying, meditating).
The scriptures were written by men under the influence of the Holy Ghost.
Revelation 19:10 .... for the testimony (words) of Jesus (THE WORD) is the spirit of prophecy.
2 Peter 1:21 For prophecy came.....as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Now to your question, what does it mean to blaspheme the Holy Ghost. Since the WORD (truth) was written by the Holy Ghost, you blaspheme when you call his WORD a lie. Example:
1 Timothy 2:3-4 For this is GOOD AND ACCEPTABLE in the sight of God our Saviour; who WILL HAVE all men to be saved, and come to the KNOWLEDGE of the truth.
Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come, thy WILL BE DONE in earth, as it (HIS WILL) is in heaven.
1 Timothy 4:10-11 .....who is the SAVIOUR OF ALL MEN, specially those that BELIEVE.
(vs) 11 These things COMMAND AND TEACH.
Psalm 22:27 ALL the ends of the world shall REMEMBER and TURN unto the LORD: and ALL KINDREDS OF THE NATIONS SHALL WORSHIP BEFORE THEE.
1 Corinthians 15:28 And when ALL THINGS shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him (Father) that put ALL THINGS under him (Son) that GOD MAY BE ALL IN ALL.
WE all blaspheme on our journey to TRUTH just REPENT and TURN to the new found TRUTH.
You wrote "she says my one daughter says" which sounds like hearsay. It's best to hear something directly from a person so you know it's not changed through another person. So I would not make any judgments or worry unless you hear from that person directly. Everyone has beliefs and everyone has a religion in my opinion. Christianity is a religion. People claiming to be woke or progressive will pretend it's not a religion but a relationship, but those are not mutually exclusive terms. It is both. Atheism is also a religion. Atheists put their faith in unproved, never witnessed theories to explain their existence. Some of them put their hope and faith in other men- who are atheist scientists like them. Some put their hope and faith in government, which is why some cry and burn down cities when they don't get their way, acting like a spoiled 4 year old. Some pursue and worship idols, money, power, fame. Matthew 6:19-21
Romans 12:2 says it this way: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Even though we generally understand this verse warning the believer not to behave as the unsaved world does & adopt a new way of thinking, it also has implications to the believer not to conform to the world that sets its hope on the finite & material aspects of it, rather than putting faith in the God Who knows & does all things well.
The believer does at times suffer disappointments, but ought to immediately look heavenward & commit himself & those matters to the Lord Who will bring it to pass in His Time, & generally in a manner above what we could have expected or planned for.
Some other Scriptures to reflect upon: Philippians 4:6,7; Romans 8:28; Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 73:23-26; Psalm 121:1-8; Psalm 42:11; Matthew 6:33; Proverbs 3:5,6; 1 Peter 5:6,7; John 14:27; Hebrews 13:5. And many more, to show us there is comfort & help as we wait upon the Lord with our concerns & disappointments in this life.
To find a direct meaning of James 5:5 may not be possible because of the Greek text. However, you could consider the following Scriptures that show a person who lives for self-indulgence or self-gratification to the casting aside of the things of God & holy living.
Ecclesiastes 2:1-11; Philippians 2:17-19; Proverbs 23:20,21; Ephesians 5:15-19; 1 Corinthians 6:12,13; Matthew 6:19-21.
1st Epistle of Peter is written and starts out stating "to the strangers scattered" throughout... Why?
This is not our world. Jesus states in the Gospel of John 14:3 that He has gone to prepare a place for us and is coming back to receive us to Himself. Again, this is not our home.
Psalms 37:25
I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
Had he given God the first place rather than himself, it would have demonstrated that even with his bountiful harvests & substance, he would have acknowledged that it was God Who blessed him with these things, he would have also given of his substance to the needy around him & his own faith & love for God would have increased. I believe, in the Old Covenant economy, this rich man could have been wise in God's Eyes & not foolish, & would have been accepted by God as a man of faith & love for the people around him. Rather than being a self-centred rich 'fool', he would have been a people-centric wise man who was rich towards God having a heart towards God & not self.
That was sad to read of the comment by the ex-military man from Pakistan; such is the hate of those opposed to the Gospel & claims of Christ. You did well to block him, though I hope that you have since then also blocked cigarette smoke from filling you. Your body is God's Temple ( 1 Corinthians 6:19) where His Spirit resides - we must care for it by what we put into it just as much as to show care for what comes out of it (by our minds, our mouths, etc).
Also, do seek the Lord about a place to meet real believers & worship with them. The RC Church is not suitable at all, as much as you have a desire to be in a 'Christian' environment to pray. God hears & answers prayer right there in your room ( Matthew 6:6), where you are alone with God to call & cry to Him, & no man can interfere. But with the strong influence of the French in your country, I'm sure there would 'evangelical' Christians there also, just as we had contact with them travelling as 'Equipe Commando' in France in 1988, spreading the Word to a predominantly RC population.
Josef, may you continue to grow in the grace & knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive NOT men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Matthew 18:21-22
Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until SEVENTY times SEVEN.
Luke 6:37
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven:
Ephesians 4:32
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians Chapter 4:26-27
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Neither give place to the DEVIL.
Colossians 3:13 - Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, you also do.
Comment by Mishael: when we don't forgive others, Satan accuses us before the Throne of God, until we do forgive.
Taking Communion in unforgiveness, causes us to be unworthy to receive the blessing. We even must forgive ourselves. Every day till it takes root in our heart. How many years are you willing to live with this self-condemnation?
Wipe your heart, and in time your mind will follow.
Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
James 1:5 - If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Matthew 6:9
John 14:13-15
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Believe the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins, repent of your sins, pray to the Father in heaven in Jesus name. Pray privately in sincerity because the Lord knows what your thinking. Our Father wants to hear from his children and loves us very much. He might not love what we do sometimes but he still loves us.
