Grace saves, not works. Good works are the fruit of a genuine follower of Christ. Without works or fruit one might question that person's walk. And without obedience to Christ is that person a real Christ follower? Some fall into this category: Matthew 7:21
Thank you for sharing that Jesse, I will add that to the list. It indeed says "he saved us" past tense in Titus 3:5.
But two verses later in Titus 3:7 it says we "should be made heirs" and "hope of eternal life". That now returns to an outcome waiting to be determined. Hope of eternal life is a future thing hoped for usually in the future, not present or past, and should be made heirs is also looking to the future.
"That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Titus 3:7 KJV
One possible explanation to reconcile this with the other verses like 1 Peter 1:13, 1 Peter 1:51, Phil 2:12, 2 Timothy 1:12 is that the statement of Jesus saving us is true and universally available for all of humanity. However on an individual level it still seems it depends on someone's choices- whether someone chooses to follow Jesus or not. The Bible already says most won't choose this and most will go to hell Matthew 7:13. So when it says "he saved us" combined with that context, maybe that is a general statement that Jesus died to save all of us, but we still must choose to follow Him and accept that hope of eternal life. This is currently what these verses are seeming like.

It sounds like you're conflating being born again with salvation. Does the Bible say these occur at the exact same time? If so, please share those verses.

Jesus said this. Jesus emphasized obedience and keeping His commandments. Those who are so opposed to obeying Jesus should probably be afraid of the upcoming judgment, because someone who doesn't obey Jesus might not be a Jesus follower.

Verses on repentance are rife in the scriptures. Taking a proactive approach after a confession of faith toward living a life of holiness separates the real from the pretenders; whether in our own lives or confronting the sin of others.
Such a matter as suing one another ( 1 Corinthians 6) illustrates how making proper judgments within the Body of Christ is to occur; so that Matthew 7:1 is taken into proper context. Naturally; we are to straighten out our walk to avoid hypocrisy and to see clearly; as Jesus indicated to take the speck out of a brother's eye. Psalm 139:24 indicates a prayer to see any "offensive way" in us. As my earlier post indicates; we can seek to conform our outer behaviors so that we don't cuss; drink; smoke or dance for example but we can still foster pride or greed or something else. This is the methodology which fails when trying to reform people without the Lord transforming the heart; merely substituting one sin for another. Or; as some have said we need a new "wanter". None of these actions to curtail behaviors will make us love God any more without Him ruling and reigning in our lives.
This desire not to shake the apple cart as it were stops many from confronting sins of others; which is a necessary tool to bring forth repentance when evangelizing as well as confronting things within the church. The sin NATURE; of course is the focus which needs to be stressed on the streets but we also see individuals with sinful lifestyles that must be repented of. That principle is for nonbelievers and those who confess Christ as well in light of 1 John 3:8-10. 1 Timothy 5:20 shows how indeed these confrontations are necessary in the church; and a responsibility of those in authority; such as Timothy was after Paul instructed him and trained him. 1 Timothy 5:24 shows how certain sins are more obvious than others; but all will be judged.
Recently a book on the subject (apparently there were several) was studied in small group; in this case one by Randy Alcorn. There were some questions on one of his video shorts and not total agreement; nonetheless other segments and much written in the book seem scripturally solid.
What we see in scripture shows how saints of God will; at least after the Tribulation and what I believe eschatologically to be the Millennium (and certainly for eternity afterwards) be ruling and reigning on earth. The difference will be in the New Jerusalem being above earth rather than on earth as happens in Revelation 21. I will note that it is the New Jerusalem; not the entire planet or place where heaven is that comes to earth. It would seem that would remain somewhere else. Ezekiel 1:22 seem to suggest an expanse of ice; M.J. Agee seems to think the location is identifiable. For the sake of avoiding unnecessary controversy I will keep the basic premise that it is somewhere beyond our physical universe.
The key; again is scripture; Jesus stated that "you know where I am going." ( John 14:4-6). The issue where was that they had seen God in Christ who was a member of the Trinity and always did the Father's will. How to get there of course is through the narrow gate which all but the son of Perdition could enter of the 12 Disciples ( Matthew 7:13-14). This is perhaps the biggest point that needs to be hammered home. Other than believing in a literal heaven as being a priority we also need to realize that only by His righteousness can we pass from death to life and most will take the wide road to destruction. That necessitates elimination of any universalist sentiments. I have stated before the concept of 2 Corinthians 7:10 where godly sorrow brings repentance rather than the type Judas Iscariot had as to sadness on the consequences of his actions. Peter showed true repentance because he knew He had betrayed the Son of God who he truly loved.

If one is not barring fruit and you are not sure by his doctrine he's probably a worker of the flesh.

I would say any false literature or added literature to intentionally change the word of God in a way to loose the virtue intended yes that is what one may call leaven and yes perhaps demonic.
However false or demonic "doctrine" comes from the interpreter or teacher from any Bible, as well as the king James.
Doctrine is what you build out of the scripture whether it's faulty scripture or not. "A belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group."

Hi John. This whole section (from Matthew chapter 5 to chapter 7) were instructional words spoken by Jesus to his disciples (not just those 12 closest to Him, but to all those who were following Him at that time).
The passage you're enquiring, begins & includes Matthew 7:15-20. When you read it as a specific section, you will see who Jesus was referring to. It was to the false prophets. He said that you will easily recognize them by their fruits (the words they spoke & the lives they lived, all the while looking like docile humble sheep). Then Jesus explains this further by considering the fruit-producing tree. The tree that is corrupt (whether it has some disease in it, or malnourished) is bound to produce ugly unhealthy fruit, if at all. But the tree that is well-formed, well-fertilized, & well-cared for, can only produce good fruit. Likewise, these false prophets/teachers were corrupt trees producing inedible disgusting fruit, ready only for burning. So, the disciples were warned to carefully observe such men who come proclaiming God's Word - their words & life will reveal that they were imposters & to be shunned.
And the same could be said about people who claim to belong to Christ (Christians) but produce bad fruit in their lives. The Lord knows who belong to Him, but we need to also be wise to discern (from understanding God's Word), who are false prophets/teachers. All such the Lord has no knowledge of - they will suffer just as those who reject God's Love in Christ His Son. But John, I know from what you write, that you really love the Lord & trusting Him each day for your needs. So from your life, however difficult it may be, you will produce fruit & I'm sure it would be the 'good fruit' - fruit that expresses real love & faith, care & concern for someone else in difficulties, even getting beside another lonely person & sharing something of God's concern & love for them. I have a question Matthew 7:19 the fruit part is that saving souls or doing what Jesus says to me it sounds like he's saying you're going to hell so does that mean before you become a born again Christian or after you become a born again Christian don't mean to be difficult just learning thank you
The second thing after prayer for those walking in the Spirit is some sort of action whenever we are able. 1 John 3:17 echoes what is already written in Proverbs 14:31 about not neglecting a brother in need (a sin of omission). Sadly; we live in a fallen world and what is politically correct in immediately stepping out to help financially may end up getting us rended such as indicated in Matthew 7:6.
Often today no one wants to get into something messy. There are things such as domestic abuse where wisdom in contacting the authorities and those who are specialized in care of certain situations rather than stepping in ourselves.
I cannot overemphasize from the way I see it warning people of the seriousness of sin; as it affects not just them but others within their family and the entire congregation much of the time as well. We cannot assume if someone has been a believer for many years that they can't be headed for a fall; and these days more seem to go toward total apostasy. Exhortation needs to warn people that in our own strength we will be beaten down; in our own understanding we can and will be decieved without the Spirit guiding us as well as TRUSTING God even when it seems things around us contradict that as being a logical approach.
Just as we need to be careful who prays for us; we also need to be cautious who we take advice from. The enemy was granted permission to speak lies through the prophets ( 1 Kings 22:21-23) and many around us today will be used by the enemy if we are not careful. Such things as divorce and subsequent remarriage are high on that list in my assessment. There is always someone out there who will tell us to do what we want and tell us what we want to hear.
It is always a small remnant who live out what they believe by example; and there are no short cuts to obedience due to our love for Christ. ( John 14:15). Obedience is better than sacrifice as well ( 1 Sam. 15:22).

Some of us like to cherry pick our way through the scriptures; but if we look at the whole history of man; the nation of Israel and even the church in the New Testament there are many problems and snares that were in Paul's time in the early church; and prophetically were warned about by Paul; Peter and Timothy as well as John in Revelation and James as well in regard to the last days. We need to both appreciate the fact that we need to walk the straight and narrow path that few find ( Matthew 7:14); and yet not be Pharisitical in inventing the narrowest most difficult path of legalism that heads to hell. In the whole subject and as much as can be understood about predestination and whatever free choices man is given while on this earth as to his life; in the end a certain number are saved and also lost. We can say with some confidence that as Jesus stated
"you shall know them by their fruits". ( Matthew 7:15-20). There are numerous passages describing these; which are summarized in Galatians 5:22. Bad fruits such as listed in Mark 7:21 are things which the Spirit should be weeding out of our lives.
However; when it becomes clear in the long term where one's affiliations lie; we can't make the mistake of sins; even some recurring ones as proving someone isn't saved. This is where the Lord will use a rebuke to work on someone; ultimately people in the faith need to listen to the Lord as He refines and chastises them. 1 John 1:8-10 make it pretty clear that none of us even if saved are without sin; or haven't sinned in years as some like to proudly proclaim. There are clearly some much more advanced intheir maturity than others; closer to the prize. Some are more "carnal" than others; it doesn't excuse continuing that way but again we hopefully learn not to do certain things after being a believer 20 years than say 3 weeks. Saying that he confesses us as called and chosen is needed along with whatever we may proclaim.

But if you examine Matthew 7:16-23 carefully you'll see that it was them trusting in their works and not his work is why he never knew them.
vv 16 states "Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Matthew 7:17-20 goes on to give you the contrast between the fruit and the thistles and what become of them.
There's dead works and there's fruit.
Thistles may be a sign of dead works.
Fruit is a work of God and performed by God that the believer bares by being connected to the vine. Philippians 1:6.
Philippians 2:13.
This is what James is saying in James 2:18 "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I WILL SHEW THEE MY FAITH BY MY WORKS."
A person wilfully continuing in sin is not saved, so you can't lose what you don't have.
James 3:19 reads; "Thou believest THAT THERE IS ONE GOD; thou doest well: THE DEVILS ALSO BELIEVE, AND TREMBLE.
Believing there's a God doesn't save souls.
Also; Titus 1:16 reads; "THEY PROFESS THAT THEY KNOW GOD; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate."
A profession doesn't save souls either.
Look at those professors described in the previous verse.
vv 15. "Unto the pure all things are pure: (BUT UNTO THEM THAT ARE DEFILED AND UNBELIEVING) is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled."
If you can earn your salvation you can lose it.
If you can earn it you have no need of Christ, he came to loose the captives.
He didn't come to give instructions on how to live a saved life.( You can't. )
Salvation is him giving you life that produces fruit.
So shall we continue in sin? NO!
If you were baptized into Christ you are Identified with him and see sin the way he do.
This is what Romans chapters 6, 7, and 8 is all about.
The Word of God teaches us in 1 Cor. 2:14 that the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned.
This is why those communicating their messages in this 'forum' so often use the word 'discerning' while the 'Word of God' is not of any private interpretation ( 2 Peter 1:20). This is why it also teaches; that anyone that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man ( 1 Cor. 2:15).
Please remember, the words from the 'Word of God' are according to the 'Spirit of Truth' ( John 14:17). Furthermore, the Spirit of truth cannot be received by this world ( John 14:17) as this whole world has been deceived ( Rev. 12:9).
Please study the 'Word of God' and learn of the difference between the 'natural' and the 'spiritual' body ( 1 Cor. 15:44) and how and by whom this whole world has been deceived ( Rev. 12:9).
Seek, and ye shall find ( Matthew 7:7).

This is what the Bible teaches about salvation. The change in emphasis from salvation by God to salvation by man is part of the apostasy of the last days. The truth is, many today are told that they are saved because of some followed formula; but Jesus said believers would be known by their fruits, not by their human works ( Matthew 7:16).
He also said, in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not everyone saying to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but the one doing the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? And in your name did we not cast out demons? And in your name did many works of power?' And then I will confess to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, the ones working lawlessness."
Further insights on coming of the Lord and 2 Peter 3:9
When we consider how God is patient and wanting to see no one to perish we certainly are aware of different perspectives of this statement. A Universalist; for example would take this to mean that eventually all will be made right with Christ (i.e all will be saved). This; of course is a spurious argument for what should be obvious by many other verses such as Matthew 7:13-14.
A second thought is that God is waiting to give everyone opportunity to "choose" whether or not to "accept Christ as their personal Savior." I am not going to use this space to delve into that argument either; I will leave it at this; in the end a set number will come to Christ and the same can be said for those who aren't ultimately saved. No matter how you slice it; Christ is already Lord and King of Glory whether or not we decide to acknowledge it; and if He truly is Lord then we can no longer dictate our own lives as to the terms of redemption or how we choose to live our lives after we are saved.
It makes more sense to me to look at those who are called and chosen as to their whole time frame (pre and post their statement of faith). We need to keep in mind that we were all following the god of this world before coming to Christ and therefore enemies of God. As such; we are under the mercy of His Divine Lordship as to being offered terms of peace and reconciliation through the means of the atonement. So His longsuffering is just as much for His people as for the unsaved masses in general in forestalling His judgment (and I would argue more so).
Whether we sling the term "common grace" to the fact that there is some comfort for the unregenerate while still in this earthly existence or not; we all need to realize that if saved we are dead to our old nature and lives on this earth. Pleasure only is for those He has called out ( Psalm 16:11) and there is no peace for the wicked ( Isaiah 48:22 and many other verses).

I think the verses you've used have a theme of what a Christian's behavior should be. So, if a Christian says they believe in Jesus, they do well, because even the demons believe. But a Christian should have an outward sign of belief in their works/behavior/fruit. So called Christians thought they were saved, but Jesus said He never knew them, because they were workers of iniquity (sin). They never repented.

Hi Natasha St John! If you read in Revelation 7:4-8 It explains that the 144,000 are out of the 12 tribes of Israel. As we read on starting with verse 9 we see that the nations that make up the rest of the world, that have their garments washed white in the blood of the Lamb, are a multitude that no man could number. So the 144,000 are only those that God has sealed, out of the 12 tribes of Israel. Now we know because God's Word is truth and there is a thread in the bible. Isaiah 64:6 says that all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. In Matthew 7:21-23 says that God will say depart from me ye workers of iniquity. Also in
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 it says, Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. And in Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. So by fallowing the thread of the Bible we can clearly see that the 144,000 are only out of the 12 tribes of Israel, they are washed in the blood of the Lamb and sealed by God. I don't see how anyone can say that for sure. The answer would be maybe. There seems to be some sort of confusion as to the concept of the "unforgiveable sin". That; according to the Gospels is spelled out fairly clearly-that of ascribing God's Spirit to Satan (or Beelzebub otherwise known as the king of the demons) which is basically the same despite some blowback I have had on the subject. That is why Christ says that any offense against Him is forgivable but not to the Holy Spirit. This shows how the Spirit is God's testimony to the world which is to remind us of "sin; righteousness and judgment to come" ( John 16:8).
There is another common misconception around the "sin leading to death." ( 1 John 5:16-17). There are certain sins which Paul mentions in the Corinthian church such as when the man was given over to Satan so that the flesh may be saved. ( 1 Cor. 5:5). Indeed; Paul makes it clear that if Communion isn't taken properly many have gotten sick and "fallen asleep" (died) as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 11:30.
There is always the chance that in a last minute repentance (such as the thief on the cross) or perhaps right before death repentance can occur. This would certainly be the exception rather than the rule as sadly "few" will be saved ( Matthew 7:14 etc). There is a difference of someone who is in a lifestyle of sin compared to say someone that slips up once or twice (as seems to be the case with many Fentinol overdoses these days). We would also have to assess if the man in question ever confessed Christ previously; and if any fruit evident of true repentance was in his life ( Matt. 3:8-10). There is a whole host of other things Satan uses such as music and the occult; the desire to be popular; etc. which drugs can be used as a gateway. That is different; although tied in with the physiological dependencies someone is trapped in; or emotional state of suicidal behavior that triggers such a sad ending.

If one is shown the truth today in Scripture and they don't see that truth, are those people only being deceived, or are they deceiving others with the intent to deceive them? It would seem all those verses are being fulfilled now, or being played out for this time period today. The Word of God teaches us in 1 Cor. 2:14 that the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned.
This is why those communicating their messages in this 'forum' so often use the word 'discerning' while the 'Word of God' is not of any private interpretation ( 2 Peter 1:20). This is why it also teaches; that anyone that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man ( 1 Cor. 2:15).
Please remember, the words from the 'Word of God' are according to the 'Spirit of Truth' ( John 14:17). Furthermore, the Spirit of truth cannot be received by this world ( John 14:17) as this whole world has been deceived ( Rev. 12:9).
May we suggest you search the words 'a world deceived' an learn how you may know the difference between the 'natural' and the 'spiritual' body ( 1 Cor. 15:44) and how and by whom this whole world has been deceived ( Rev. 12:9).

Grace saves, not works. Good works are the fruit of a genuine follower of Christ. Without works or fruit one might question that person's walk. And without obedience to Christ is that person a real Christ follower? Some fall into this category: Matthew 7:21
But two verses later in Titus 3:7 it says we "should be made heirs" and "hope of eternal life". That now returns to an outcome waiting to be determined. Hope of eternal life is a future thing hoped for usually in the future, not present or past, and should be made heirs is also looking to the future.
"That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Titus 3:7 KJV
One possible explanation to reconcile this with the other verses like 1 Peter 1:13, 1 Peter 1:51, Phil 2:12, 2 Timothy 1:12 is that the statement of Jesus saving us is true and universally available for all of humanity. However on an individual level it still seems it depends on someone's choices- whether someone chooses to follow Jesus or not. The Bible already says most won't choose this and most will go to hell Matthew 7:13. So when it says "he saved us" combined with that context, maybe that is a general statement that Jesus died to save all of us, but we still must choose to follow Him and accept that hope of eternal life. This is currently what these verses are seeming like.

Confrontation of sin
Verses on repentance are rife in the scriptures. Taking a proactive approach after a confession of faith toward living a life of holiness separates the real from the pretenders; whether in our own lives or confronting the sin of others.
Such a matter as suing one another ( 1 Corinthians 6) illustrates how making proper judgments within the Body of Christ is to occur; so that Matthew 7:1 is taken into proper context. Naturally; we are to straighten out our walk to avoid hypocrisy and to see clearly; as Jesus indicated to take the speck out of a brother's eye. Psalm 139:24 indicates a prayer to see any "offensive way" in us. As my earlier post indicates; we can seek to conform our outer behaviors so that we don't cuss; drink; smoke or dance for example but we can still foster pride or greed or something else. This is the methodology which fails when trying to reform people without the Lord transforming the heart; merely substituting one sin for another. Or; as some have said we need a new "wanter". None of these actions to curtail behaviors will make us love God any more without Him ruling and reigning in our lives.
This desire not to shake the apple cart as it were stops many from confronting sins of others; which is a necessary tool to bring forth repentance when evangelizing as well as confronting things within the church. The sin NATURE; of course is the focus which needs to be stressed on the streets but we also see individuals with sinful lifestyles that must be repented of. That principle is for nonbelievers and those who confess Christ as well in light of 1 John 3:8-10. 1 Timothy 5:20 shows how indeed these confrontations are necessary in the church; and a responsibility of those in authority; such as Timothy was after Paul instructed him and trained him. 1 Timothy 5:24 shows how certain sins are more obvious than others; but all will be judged.
( Galatians 5:17; 1 Cor. 6:9-10)
Recently a book on the subject (apparently there were several) was studied in small group; in this case one by Randy Alcorn. There were some questions on one of his video shorts and not total agreement; nonetheless other segments and much written in the book seem scripturally solid.
What we see in scripture shows how saints of God will; at least after the Tribulation and what I believe eschatologically to be the Millennium (and certainly for eternity afterwards) be ruling and reigning on earth. The difference will be in the New Jerusalem being above earth rather than on earth as happens in Revelation 21. I will note that it is the New Jerusalem; not the entire planet or place where heaven is that comes to earth. It would seem that would remain somewhere else. Ezekiel 1:22 seem to suggest an expanse of ice; M.J. Agee seems to think the location is identifiable. For the sake of avoiding unnecessary controversy I will keep the basic premise that it is somewhere beyond our physical universe.
The key; again is scripture; Jesus stated that "you know where I am going." ( John 14:4-6). The issue where was that they had seen God in Christ who was a member of the Trinity and always did the Father's will. How to get there of course is through the narrow gate which all but the son of Perdition could enter of the 12 Disciples ( Matthew 7:13-14). This is perhaps the biggest point that needs to be hammered home. Other than believing in a literal heaven as being a priority we also need to realize that only by His righteousness can we pass from death to life and most will take the wide road to destruction. That necessitates elimination of any universalist sentiments. I have stated before the concept of 2 Corinthians 7:10 where godly sorrow brings repentance rather than the type Judas Iscariot had as to sadness on the consequences of his actions. Peter showed true repentance because he knew He had betrayed the Son of God who he truly loved.

If one is not barring fruit and you are not sure by his doctrine he's probably a worker of the flesh.
You will notice the absence of "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance in him.
FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT AND WORKS OF THE FLESH.

I would say any false literature or added literature to intentionally change the word of God in a way to loose the virtue intended yes that is what one may call leaven and yes perhaps demonic.
However false or demonic "doctrine" comes from the interpreter or teacher from any Bible, as well as the king James.
Doctrine is what you build out of the scripture whether it's faulty scripture or not. "A belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group."
What I was saying in regards to Brother Jesse's post was that I wouldn't go to the extreme of denying anyone's access to a Church unless they possessed a King James Bible.
I believe God planned well ahead of Satan's traps and schemes. He gave us the Holyspirit to teach us and spread his message to us abroad.

The passage you're enquiring, begins & includes Matthew 7:15-20. When you read it as a specific section, you will see who Jesus was referring to. It was to the false prophets. He said that you will easily recognize them by their fruits (the words they spoke & the lives they lived, all the while looking like docile humble sheep). Then Jesus explains this further by considering the fruit-producing tree. The tree that is corrupt (whether it has some disease in it, or malnourished) is bound to produce ugly unhealthy fruit, if at all. But the tree that is well-formed, well-fertilized, & well-cared for, can only produce good fruit. Likewise, these false prophets/teachers were corrupt trees producing inedible disgusting fruit, ready only for burning. So, the disciples were warned to carefully observe such men who come proclaiming God's Word - their words & life will reveal that they were imposters & to be shunned.
And the same could be said about people who claim to belong to Christ (Christians) but produce bad fruit in their lives. The Lord knows who belong to Him, but we need to also be wise to discern (from understanding God's Word), who are false prophets/teachers. All such the Lord has no knowledge of - they will suffer just as those who reject God's Love in Christ His Son. But John, I know from what you write, that you really love the Lord & trusting Him each day for your needs. So from your life, however difficult it may be, you will produce fruit & I'm sure it would be the 'good fruit' - fruit that expresses real love & faith, care & concern for someone else in difficulties, even getting beside another lonely person & sharing something of God's concern & love for them. These are all good fruit, which a corrupt tree cannot produce. Blessings.
The second thing after prayer for those walking in the Spirit is some sort of action whenever we are able. 1 John 3:17 echoes what is already written in Proverbs 14:31 about not neglecting a brother in need (a sin of omission). Sadly; we live in a fallen world and what is politically correct in immediately stepping out to help financially may end up getting us rended such as indicated in Matthew 7:6.
Often today no one wants to get into something messy. There are things such as domestic abuse where wisdom in contacting the authorities and those who are specialized in care of certain situations rather than stepping in ourselves.
I cannot overemphasize from the way I see it warning people of the seriousness of sin; as it affects not just them but others within their family and the entire congregation much of the time as well. We cannot assume if someone has been a believer for many years that they can't be headed for a fall; and these days more seem to go toward total apostasy. Exhortation needs to warn people that in our own strength we will be beaten down; in our own understanding we can and will be decieved without the Spirit guiding us as well as TRUSTING God even when it seems things around us contradict that as being a logical approach.
Just as we need to be careful who prays for us; we also need to be cautious who we take advice from. The enemy was granted permission to speak lies through the prophets ( 1 Kings 22:21-23) and many around us today will be used by the enemy if we are not careful. Such things as divorce and subsequent remarriage are high on that list in my assessment. There is always someone out there who will tell us to do what we want and tell us what we want to hear.
It is always a small remnant who live out what they believe by example; and there are no short cuts to obedience due to our love for Christ. ( John 14:15). Obedience is better than sacrifice as well ( 1 Sam. 15:22).

Some of us like to cherry pick our way through the scriptures; but if we look at the whole history of man; the nation of Israel and even the church in the New Testament there are many problems and snares that were in Paul's time in the early church; and prophetically were warned about by Paul; Peter and Timothy as well as John in Revelation and James as well in regard to the last days. We need to both appreciate the fact that we need to walk the straight and narrow path that few find ( Matthew 7:14); and yet not be Pharisitical in inventing the narrowest most difficult path of legalism that heads to hell. In the whole subject and as much as can be understood about predestination and whatever free choices man is given while on this earth as to his life; in the end a certain number are saved and also lost. We can say with some confidence that as Jesus stated
"you shall know them by their fruits". ( Matthew 7:15-20). There are numerous passages describing these; which are summarized in Galatians 5:22. Bad fruits such as listed in Mark 7:21 are things which the Spirit should be weeding out of our lives.
However; when it becomes clear in the long term where one's affiliations lie; we can't make the mistake of sins; even some recurring ones as proving someone isn't saved. This is where the Lord will use a rebuke to work on someone; ultimately people in the faith need to listen to the Lord as He refines and chastises them. 1 John 1:8-10 make it pretty clear that none of us even if saved are without sin; or haven't sinned in years as some like to proudly proclaim. There are clearly some much more advanced intheir maturity than others; closer to the prize. Some are more "carnal" than others; it doesn't excuse continuing that way but again we hopefully learn not to do certain things after being a believer 20 years than say 3 weeks. Saying that he confesses us as called and chosen is needed along with whatever we may proclaim.

But if you examine Matthew 7:16-23 carefully you'll see that it was them trusting in their works and not his work is why he never knew them.
vv 16 states "Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Matthew 7:17-20 goes on to give you the contrast between the fruit and the thistles and what become of them.
There's dead works and there's fruit.
Thistles may be a sign of dead works.
Fruit is a work of God and performed by God that the believer bares by being connected to the vine. Philippians 1:6.
Philippians 2:13.
This is what James is saying in James 2:18 "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I WILL SHEW THEE MY FAITH BY MY WORKS."
A person wilfully continuing in sin is not saved, so you can't lose what you don't have.
James 3:19 reads; "Thou believest THAT THERE IS ONE GOD; thou doest well: THE DEVILS ALSO BELIEVE, AND TREMBLE.
Believing there's a God doesn't save souls.
Also; Titus 1:16 reads; "THEY PROFESS THAT THEY KNOW GOD; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate."
A profession doesn't save souls either.
Look at those professors described in the previous verse.
vv 15. "Unto the pure all things are pure: (BUT UNTO THEM THAT ARE DEFILED AND UNBELIEVING) is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled."
If you can earn your salvation you can lose it.
If you can earn it you have no need of Christ, he came to loose the captives.
He didn't come to give instructions on how to live a saved life.( You can't. )
Salvation is him giving you life that produces fruit.
So shall we continue in sin? NO!
If you were baptized into Christ you are Identified with him and see sin the way he do.

This is what the Bible teaches about salvation. The change in emphasis from salvation by God to salvation by man is part of the apostasy of the last days. The truth is, many today are told that they are saved because of some followed formula; but Jesus said believers would be known by their fruits, not by their human works ( Matthew 7:16).
He also said, in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not everyone saying to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but the one doing the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? And in your name did we not cast out demons? And in your name did many works of power?' And then I will confess to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, the ones working lawlessness."
When we consider how God is patient and wanting to see no one to perish we certainly are aware of different perspectives of this statement. A Universalist; for example would take this to mean that eventually all will be made right with Christ (i.e all will be saved). This; of course is a spurious argument for what should be obvious by many other verses such as Matthew 7:13-14.
A second thought is that God is waiting to give everyone opportunity to "choose" whether or not to "accept Christ as their personal Savior." I am not going to use this space to delve into that argument either; I will leave it at this; in the end a set number will come to Christ and the same can be said for those who aren't ultimately saved. No matter how you slice it; Christ is already Lord and King of Glory whether or not we decide to acknowledge it; and if He truly is Lord then we can no longer dictate our own lives as to the terms of redemption or how we choose to live our lives after we are saved.
It makes more sense to me to look at those who are called and chosen as to their whole time frame (pre and post their statement of faith). We need to keep in mind that we were all following the god of this world before coming to Christ and therefore enemies of God. As such; we are under the mercy of His Divine Lordship as to being offered terms of peace and reconciliation through the means of the atonement. So His longsuffering is just as much for His people as for the unsaved masses in general in forestalling His judgment (and I would argue more so).
Whether we sling the term "common grace" to the fact that there is some comfort for the unregenerate while still in this earthly existence or not; we all need to realize that if saved we are dead to our old nature and lives on this earth. Pleasure only is for those He has called out ( Psalm 16:11) and there is no peace for the wicked ( Isaiah 48:22 and many other verses).

So called Christians thought they were saved, but Jesus said He never knew them, because they were workers of iniquity (sin). They never repented.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 it says, Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? So by fallowing the thread of the Bible we can clearly see that the 144,000 are only out of the 12 tribes of Israel, they are washed in the blood of the Lamb and sealed by God. The rest of the world is the multitude that no man can number and is also washed in the blood of Christ Jesus.

There is another common misconception around the "sin leading to death." ( 1 John 5:16-17). There are certain sins which Paul mentions in the Corinthian church such as when the man was given over to Satan so that the flesh may be saved. ( 1 Cor. 5:5). Indeed; Paul makes it clear that if Communion isn't taken properly many have gotten sick and "fallen asleep" (died) as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 11:30.
There is always the chance that in a last minute repentance (such as the thief on the cross) or perhaps right before death repentance can occur. This would certainly be the exception rather than the rule as sadly "few" will be saved ( Matthew 7:14 etc). There is a difference of someone who is in a lifestyle of sin compared to say someone that slips up once or twice (as seems to be the case with many Fentinol overdoses these days). We would also have to assess if the man in question ever confessed Christ previously; and if any fruit evident of true repentance was in his life ( Matt. 3:8-10). There is a whole host of other things Satan uses such as music and the occult; the desire to be popular; etc. which drugs can be used as a gateway. That is different; although tied in with the physiological dependencies someone is trapped in; or emotional state of suicidal behavior that triggers such a sad ending.
