    V. 33 - man proposes, but God disposes; so many, if not all of our 'adages' come from the Bible

In verse 16 we see that acquiring godly wisdom, that is, gaining accurate knowledge of God’s Word, the Bible, and acting in harmony with it, helps us to walk in the way Jehovah approves
  • Paul on Proverbs 16 - 8 years ago
This chapter spells out the sovereignty of God. He is in control of our words, steps and destinies. God controls and directs all. Check out Isa. 45. 7 and Rom. 9. Man is on His sovereign leash and He will direct him according to His will and pleasure.

man can be most effectively reconcilled to his own enemies by his ownreconciliation to God. God is the omnipotent creator -ruler of this universe, and no enemy can attack us except by His permission. exm. Laban followed Jacob as an enemy, he was constrained to make peace with him. Esau reverted from adversary to brother under God's hand. Godly kings were delivered from their enemies. Even when the enemies are permitted to attack, they together with their harm, may be overruled for a greater good Rom.8:28

I love the book of Proverbs. It's packed with lessons and warnings. How can anyone go wrong if you use this to guide your spiritual and physical life?
I'm still trying to get a handle on the "slow to wrath". I know with all my heart that God is leading and guiding me.

Avuma, "That's why I say proudly", you said. Proverbs 16:5 "Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished." (our confidence is in the Lord, and our trust.) Nothing is impossible for God. If you find a verse that says "pride" or "proud" is ok, let us know.

To the woman who said she prefers the NT to the OT, Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him." Read: Matthew 5:8, Proverbs 21:8, Titus 1:15.

  • Lu2677 on Proverbs 16 - 9 years ago
Concerning "can God devise and direct a man's plan"
Romans 11:33 "For of him, through him, and to him are all things: to whom be glory for ever.
    Amen."
God means what he says; all things.

If we allow His Spirit within to direct us ; yes , He will show you how in the whole thing to do it. Just take your time and make sure you go the direction that He is directing you in. Trust in the Lord with your whole heart and lean not to your own understanding.

  • Lucinda Palestrant on Proverbs 16 - 9 years ago
My comment did not have the verse; Ecclesiastes 9:3 " : yea also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead."
  • Lucinda Palestrant on Proverbs 16 - 9 years ago
The context of Proverbs 16:9 is not marriage or searching for true love after divorce. As one person wrote. Proverbs 16:1 "The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord." Jeremiah 10:23 "O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.":Yea also the heart of the sons o men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead." Proverbs 30:6 "Add thou not unto his word lest he reprove thee and thou be found a liar." Also read Proverbs 3:5-7

Thank you for your ministry. God is using it to help His people in these turbulent and trying times. The encouragement is a source of good news when the bad is overwhelming. It is food to the famished and a quenching of thirst in a dry and desolate land.
