"A reproof enters more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool." In our modern age it is considered barbaric and inhumane to inflict physical punishments on criminals. But God knows better what it takes to break man's wicked mind and pride so that he might repent and change his ways. Yet it still demands a certain character to benefit from reproof and punishment, or there is no result.

Verse 17 talks about what it means to be a true friend. Jehovah God proves to be the best example of this scripture. He is so patient and loving with us at all times even though we don't deserve it.

"He that hath knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding." Being excited to learn is good; but it takes proof by experience to teach others. My Dad used to tell me, It's better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

"A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren." In Matthew 8:11-12, as in many other places, the warning is clearly, that name and privilege does not give anyone a free pass, regardless of moral character. The fact that the Jews as a people have generally rejected Jesus, and that the Gentiles have received Him, shows this!
  • Mr. Smith on Proverbs 17 - 7 years ago
vs 2, Wise servant/shameful son (see Eccl. 10:7). The servant operating out of the authority of his imagination (heart) will rule (have power) over a son operating from the sense realm (human lusts, ie. prodigal son, Luke 15). The person that discovers their divine position ( Ps. 82:6, John 10:34) will share the inheritance (blessings) along with other like-minded ( Gal. 3:29) in Christ.

Great proverb, all proverbs are inspiring in one way or another, thank God for the wisdom within them. One of my favorite understandings spoken from God is I have told My people they can have what they say, but My people are saying what they have.

Our heart is like a medicine. The word that comes to mind is love. Love heals. A broken spirit dries the bones. The word that comes to mind is will. Our will must be God's will. That's where our strength comes from.

Verse 8 seems to be a little ambiguous but I take it to mean as the eye (or the reflection of the soul) being the precious stone in it's marvelous beauty and perfect character, the gift.
