The law and the prophets is a reference to what we now call the Old Testament scriptures which contain the law of Moses and the Prophetic writings such as Jeremiah ect.

Victor, the law and the prophets mean the first five books of the Bible.

Greetings Victor, The Law when mentioned in the new testament generally refers to the first five books of the Bible attributed to Moses. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. This is where the ten commandments are found.

The prophets were the (major in size) writings of those like Jeremiah, Isaiah, etc.

The Minor (in size) prophets were those like Amos, Jonah, Micah, etc.

Someone asked Jesus what was the most important or great commandment.

Matthew 22:36 - Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Mat 22:37 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38 - This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39 - And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 22:40 - On these two commandments hang ALL the law and the prophets.

In other words if you keep the two commandments you keep them all.

Well that and believing that Jesus is Christ

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
