Leslie, the Ordinance of the Lord's Supper is essentially a memorial occasion where the body of believers who meet together for worship & ministry from the Word, also physically remember the Lord's Sacrifice for them. It is a very practical, visible way to help focus our thoughts upon the Lord, when many people had many other distractions during the week. As also in the other ordinance given to the Church, Water Baptism, this was an act of signify the change in one's life, identification with Christ, & performed before witnesses who marked that one as 'now belonging to Christ'.

So, I see that both these Ordinances given to us, are meant for public performance: the Lord's Supper with believers, & Baptism before the unbelievers. One could in a sense perform them in private & be happy within oneself that the Lord is being remembered in the breaking of bread, but Scripturally speaking, this is would not be the right way to do it because of its meaning & significance.
