I would not be the first to point out that there are a number of significant inconsistencies in this account, as there are elsewhere in the Bible. First there is the self defeating genealogy for Jesus, which incidentally is at variance with the old testament version from which it is drawn and which moreover directly contradicts Matthew's genealogy. Indeed the two accounts of the nativity also diverge; Matthew's having the advantage at least of being internally consistent (even if it does read a bit like a rerun of the Moses story) whilst Luke's is just historically impossible!
